Some pointers you need to think about before even starting a tournament:
Credibility. Tell people about the tournament and your way of organising things, tell them about the awards, and ask people, preferable well-known ones, for advice and help.
rules: You need to have your rules ready and sorted out at the start of each tournment. Test the all, with some friends, and see which ones need changing.
awards: To draw enough fighters, you must be able to give some decend awards.
Crew: you'll need referees, and healers for sure. A guide who can bring people to the stands would be nice as well.
Hosting: Keep in mind, hosting a tournament is a busy job, you'll be recieving 5 tells per minute, and people will ask you things constantly, make sure you can make at least half of them happy.
Duration: A tournament really shouldn't last any longer then 4 houers, this one even is a problem for me.
Pass-time entertainment: What if the tournament suddenly comes to a stop? you'll need to entertain your fighters and your crowd to keep them interested.
The audience: The audience will be standing still most of the time. How do you keep them motivated?
Crew II: Your crew deserves some special attention, cause they helped you out so well. What will you do for them in return?
Schedual: Who will fight who in each round? make sure you got your schedual at the ready, that way, it will all take less time.
If you have thought about at least half of this points, the tournament will be great fun! I'm looking forward to a tournament hosted by someone capable and dedicated! Plus.... I'd really like to join one myself, and show off to my luverly Elesiy!
