The weakness bug
« on: June 22, 2006, 11:39:35 pm »
Since the other thread was closed for some reason, letme explain a thing or 2 about bug exploiting in general, refering to weakness more in particular.
Fact 1: If it is reported and confirmed on the bug tracker then it is a bug.
Fact 2: If it creates an advantage for you or a disadvantage for the other players it is an exploitable bug.
Fact 3: If you are abusing it you are exploiting a bug.
Fact 4: If you are exploiting a bug there will be consequences.
Now, about the weakness bug...
Here's "how the f*** casting a spell in the normal fashion" (to quote Beanius's "friend") can be called an exploit:
The bug regarding the weakness spell is reported and confirmed on the BT (bug no# 1538)
The intention for that spell was to stop the player from moving when encumbered, not to cause him/her droping inventory items.
So, fact 1 and 2 are satisfyed.
Besides, I asked Talad's oppinion and he said that since the spell is not working like it should and can create an advantage for certain individuals, it goes under the category of bug exploits.
And that will make the fact 4 a posibility if you are caught.
And to quote Beanius's "friend" once more "If this is truly a bug, they why the hell doesn't someone simply remove the Weakness glyphs from the game? That spell is utterly useless now that it's function is considered "exploiting" and casting a spell is now a bannable offense."
Because the bug is already fixed from what I heared and the aforementioned effect will be gone at the next update.

About fixing the thing:
Basically, the bug stems from using the buffed stat instead of the base.  I had fixed this for equipment requirements a while back, and thought I had fixed it completely.  However, the max carry script was also taking in the buffed stat, so just today I added actor script properties to grab the bases of stats.  The script for carry ammount will then be modified to use these, and then Weakness won't do this after the next release.  Until then, it is exploiting a bug, so don't do it.

Is that what caused the NPC's on the server yesterday to be fried?

Funny, I made a character who's magic I was gonna max. I guess maxing dark way is impossible now.

No Suno, you still can, you just need to use the other dark way spell to do it now.   8)

Also the information Syilph gave helps me to understand alot more about the weakness spell.
The fact that it encumbers someone and slows their attack makes much more sense to me then dropping inventory.
I look forward to seeing the results of the fix.  :innocent:

:) Good to know. Thanks.

The weakness glyph is it's purpose just meant to weaken the player you are fighting? When it is fixed is the ideal to be able to cast as many times as you can to weaken the player but not have it so they drop their inventory?
I've been outside, it's overrated and the graphics suck!

I haven't used magic in so long, I don't know one spell from the other. I know what Meteor and Summon are, but the rest of these new spells are a mystery to me. Mind telling me who gives the quest to get the "other" spell?

These are 2 of the most weird conclusions evar!

Why would maxing dark way be imposible to you? Do you train on people while you duel them? I saw you from quite awhile in PS so I doubt you never saw a NPC that you could cast weakness or another dark way spell on.

Edit: It is alowed to cast weakness on anything you like except players. Weaken the NPCs untill they'll faint, hell, even cast it on rocks but not on players. The weakness bug only refers to PvP not regular combat.
And yes Zorbels it will not cause inventory items lost when it will be fixed. ;)

Right :}

Even though dropping your inventory is logical, it's irritating and very easily abused, especially when new players are involved. So we just want to avoid it. Your target will be weaker (and thus of course won't be able to attack you as strongly), but losing items won't come into play.

Suno, we can't give out who gives what quest on the forums.

Great! Understood and thanks for the information Karyuu, DaveG and Syilph. As much as it seems realistic that when you are weakened you wouldn't be able to carry much, I like that we can't lose out inventory. I would hate that very much and would probably never duel just to keep my stuff! *Zorbels says in a bad smeagol impression "Myyyyyyyy preeeeeeeeecious!"

Yes, I never said it wasn't logical.  It's the first exploit we've had that makes sense.  :P  It's still an expoit, however.
