and the charity shop I worked at, when we get retro machines we sell them quite cheaply and people buy them :).

We has a Grandstand 5000 (pong machine) - boxed, sell for £7.
Sega Master System - boxed, sell for £7
Super Nintendo - boxed, sell for £8
Sega Mega Drive - boxed sell for £8

Real Market value for these is about x2.5 the price we sold it for.

so there is still high demand for old consoles, and no need to buy the latest and greatest.

He's right, consoles are cheaper than PC's.  Substantially so.  They're also not (yet) vulnerable to infection, etc.

My PC isn't vulnerable to infection because it has ME at the controls.

XP, actually.  I meant that I'm in control of my computer and because of it I've never had a problem with infections because I know what I'm doing.

I understand.  I've only had a few, a while ago, to deal with.  My point here is that consoles do not suffer some of the complexity issues (especially basic system requirements) that PCs do in the area of games.  You just boot it up and play.

Like I said, I grew up with a Commodore 64 and I continue to use Dos to this day for certain things.  Complexity doesn't bother me much.

I'm part of the minority though.

This is just sick

That is incredibly disappointing to me. I can't believe people can act like that over a material object.

Walmart claims to want to provide their customer with great product in a safe and secure shopping enviroment.

(1) Why have people race for the game console? Like the brother said, a raffel would have been much more sensible.
(2) Who approved this "race" thinking that it would be safe? Surely you would be able to foresee people getting overly pushy to be one of the first to get their hands on the PS3.
(3) With such a huge company how could this poor planning go un-noticed? I mean more than one person must had to approve the promotion, so how in the heck could such settings of dangerous conditions bypass these people?

This was supposed to be a fun promotion of the PS3. It isn't all Walmarts fault though, even though poor planning helped the maddness. People are supposed to be some what civilized right? Right?

Ok maybe not. Which brings me to why I feel the way I do. It is disappointing to see fellow man act with such ignorance and stupidity. All for something that will provide entertainment only for so long before it becomes out dated and boring. Oh and let's not forget the steep price you are going to have to pay to own this baby. Also walking out into a parking lot with a PS3 could get you shoot because people want it so bad. [Another news story I saw about PS3] Yep, look at me rushing out the door to go buy one! HA! Ya, right. I have better things to do with my time and money.

1.  Don't blame Walmart.  Blame the people for being so incredibly stupid.  It was their choice to run.  Are you telling me that they're incapable of independant thought?  Should the law not expect people to think for themselves?

2.  Individual Walmarts are managed by local managers, not by the CEOs.  They're a chain.

3.  Wait a year and they'll only be $300.  Wait a bit longer and they'll be 1/6th of that.

I blame both, as they are both responsible. Walmart could have prevented these accidents, as well as the people. There is fault on both sides no matter what way you debate it. People would not have run if the promotion wasn't there in the first place.

Exactly a chain. They still all follow the same guide lines, rules and manuals. So when head office sends them an annoucement saying "Hey employee's we are going to have a promotional race for PS3's" they have no choice but to follow those instructions because even the head managers only manage, they don't own any rights to the store or the way it runs. They are told how to run it and are expected to follow those guide lines. Someone had to approve it before it was sent from head office. Most likely many people had too.

Zanzibar, if you know a stupid person is about to hurt him/herself, and it's partially his/her fault, do you take no effort to prevent it?

Zorbels, I think Zanzibar's saying that it was probably the local manager's idea to do the promotion, not the head of the chain's.

Also, what did you expect? People are people, and as such are essentially bad.

That's not the question.  The question is of liability.
