Artificial scarcity has been a staple of big business ever since the beginning of business. You can command a much higher price and increase demand for an item if you play up the "elite" aspect of ownership. Quantities are not limited these days because they could not run off a couple hundred million more units before they start selling, they are limited to create a buzz and to keep prices high. The merchants go along with it because all those foolish people who have succumbed to this nonsense have the opportunity to buy x,y, and z other products while they are on-line and those who line up only to be disappointed will be loathe to come away completely empty-handed.

Zorbels, I think Zanzibar's saying that it was probably the local manager's idea to do the promotion, not the head of the chain's.

Also, what did you expect? People are people, and as such are essentially bad.

That's just splitting hairs and not the point. It didn't matter who approved it, I just wondered how it was not foreseen what would, could and did happen.

What did I expect? Oh I don't know maybe some humanity. Or maybe for people to learn from the 1990's and the tickle me elmo craze when people were trampled trying to be the first to own one. Tickle Me Elmo Link

That's what you got. People are actually fairly depraved. It's sad, but true. Also, almost no one learns from other peoples' mistakes.

My last gaming console was the Atari 2600.  Have been avid computer user after that and I don't really understand the point of consoles anymore... other than you can play while sitting on your living room couch... but even then, FPS games that require a mouse really suck on consoles.

I've always had a thang for consoles because you don't need "Minimum Requirements".

IDK. Computers are fun and all but I always have to spend more money to play current game.

Where as on a computer, a newer game can be played on an older system with tweaking to the game to turn down the graphics level and other settings to get it to work smoothly.  It will run fine, just won't be as pretty.  With a console, when a new one is released, you have to upgrade if you want to play any new game.  Unless theyare making frontwards compatible consoles now.

Well it won't be too long until you will require a 64 bit processor to run any new programs at all. Less than 5 years for Windows machines I'd say.

neko, have you ever tried to run a new game on an old machine?  Sometimes it doesn't matter how much you turn the graphics down, it just is not fun.  I can't run anything newer than 2003.
$300-500 every five years, or $1,200+ every other year?

Built my system in 2002.  Last major update I did was to the video card, a 100$ investment, last year.  Newest game I bought would have been civ 4.  (actually, is was C&C: the first decade, but since thats just all the old c&c games remade to run on xp, I don't count that as a newer game) I seem to run unreal 2k4, swat 4, or gal civ 2 just fine as well.  Plays those flawlessly on thier normal settings.

As reference point:
P4, 2.4 ghz (not dual core, not 64 bit, just plain old p4)
1 gig ram
running XP
ATI Radeon X1300 series vid card

Granted, I don't know how old your system is.  But mine, as its approaching 5 years old now, still runs new games just fine.

Monetary wise, I guess I've invested probably $1500 usd in it over its lifespan so far.  But things like the 22 inch monitor, dual plextor dvd burner, multiple hard drives set up in a raid 5 architechture, high end Audigy Soundblaster sound card with 7.1 speaker system, etc, do tend to up the price as compared to a console, which has no need for any of that stuff.

I'm not saying that consoles aren't nice.  I was simply giving counter point to Loto's comments.  :)

Edit: now if I tried to run PS on my pentium pro machine built back in '95, then yeah, no matter how much tweaking is done, it still wouldn't run it.  But like wise, a SNES ain't anywhere near powerful enough to run a Wii game, even if the game did fit into the SNES cartridge slot.
