All out renderings
« on: February 28, 2003, 07:29:02 am »
Have you ever wondered why game developers make uber-high res. rederings that will never, ever see the light of day (in a game)? Why not just go straight to making the actual world models? Wouldnt that be more time effective?

1) Because they are beautyful
2) Because they attract players
3) Because they show the skill of the developers
4) Because they are nice to make
5) Because they show the world in a different vision

My reply is thus:

1) Agreed
2) Yes, but with a false vision of the world
3) Definately
4) Nice, but terribly difficult at times
5) Yes, but wouln\'t it be better to know what your getting?

And so:

2) what is giving you a false vision of the world? Does a true--unique-certified vision exist?
4) terribily difficult? You mean making them or understanding them?
5) this potentially disqualifies 99% of the book covers around the world, since they almost always show the interpretation of the book done by a graphic artist. Since we\'re not selling cookies or hairdryers, I think that a different vision \'on the box\' is a pleasant thing to have.

Ah, and to add a small detail: quite often (every time that is bossible, actually), the game models are turned into the models used for rendering, to save time and resources.

Just my 2 cents ;)

I agree, I love renderings, they can always be used FUTURE into the game you know.

Hmmm, Honestly I never thought about turning the game models to actual renderings... I always thought the other way around. Makes more sense now, thanks.

When I said difficult I meant in making them. I\'ve dabbled in 3dsmax for 3 years now, there is no true easy way of making really good renderings.

On your #5, I understand your argument.

On your #2, I like your counter argument about the true-unique-certified vision, because in this open ended system there is nothing to say that the world won\'t evolve into it.
