Start in Hydlaa
« on: February 19, 2007, 07:05:05 am »
I have a fascinating little dillemma currently... See, I was on my way to the Bronze Doors, I reached the are which houses them, and alas, the client encountered an error and crashed before I even took another step.  Now, this is sort of funny... because now whenever I start up the game, as soon as the map and GUI load, it encounters that same problem before the screen even displays any in-game graphics at all, meaning that I can't simply use the /die command to go to the death realm, because I never get the chance.

Sound frustrating as all hell?  You betcha it is.

So I had a thought that perhaps upon starting up the game, there would be two buttons (after you click on the correct character): a Start button (which would default to the last location in-game), or a Start in Hydlaa button (cleverly the very title of this post).  At the very least, perhaps consider it for the time being, while the client is still as unstable as it is.

Speaking of my little problem... almighty, all-powerful, omni-potent game maker people, is there anything you can do for me?  Like I could give you my account information (you shouldn't trust anyone, I know, but I'm desperate here) and you could manually go in and send me home somehow??  Please???

While I'm at it, making suggestions and all, I've also got a real problem with fall damage.  The last time I went to the Bronze Doors, it was just slightly less of a catastrophe.  I walk aimlessly for a freakin half-hour, I get to this fascinating new place, and... I run too quickly off a hill and die.  The dungeon under the Laanx Temple was just as much of a problem.  Three times ago, I was trying to descend a ladder (but was not running this time, mind you), but somehow I failed to go to the next rung, but instead skipped the next 20 and died.  The last two times, I fell down and died RIGHT IN THE ENTRANCE.  Just as I reached the floor I died.  TWICE!  Now that's bound to make anyone want to strangle a puppy, and strangle I did.  No joke, I was on the 6 o'clock news.

So I propose that perhaps fall damage would only take away some percentage of your remaining health, depending on how far the fall is.  Or, perhaps just take away as much as it does now, but must necessarily leave you with at least 1% left or something.  I don't know how to handle it, realli, but it is a genuine problem in my eyes.

P.S.  I'm sorry if my tone was a little rude in this post.  I realli don't mean to be rude; I like the game, and I apprecaite what all you developers are trying to do.  Heck I'd join the team if I thought I was good enough.  I'm just understandably a tad bit frustrated, sorry.

The entrance to the dungeon is tall enough to kill most new characters.  It's supposed to be that way.

As far as the bug you encounter when loading up the game... I have no explanation for it.  Maybe try reinstalling, I don't know.

If your position in the game needs to be reset, be sure to mention your character name.

The problem though is - btw go to sleep, oh wait time zones - that the way to reset his character is to kill it, and so he has to walk all the way back to the fortress from oja... which is a pain.  Or maybe I'm wrong.  Completely and utterly wrong.

Indeed. But having a "Move to Hydlaa" button is just asking for OOC teleport abuse.

Xus, you're going to have to greet the Death Guardian... :} At least you'll be able to play though. Position reset.

You are an angel.  A beautiful, terrifying angel whom I'm very very afraid of.  :P

Still, what could be causing his problem?  I've experienced my share of technical problems but nothing like what he describes - except for the Fortress map in particular.  It's to do with "particles" or something, and the particle-free map that Talad uploaded solved that problem.  But if Xus is experiencing a more general problem, and only upon logging in... or maybe it is only to do with the fortress map?  Xus, give us something to work on here.

It would've probably helped if Xus had the access violation number written down and searched for it in this thread - it's probably particle-related if it crashes upon that region each and every time.

Concerning the Wishlist part of this thread: I don't think we'll have a "Start in Hydlaa" button for the same reason GMs don't teleport players anywhere they wish. It's very easy to abuse the feature when you're lazy and don't want to walk your character through the wilderness. If you're crashing upon login, a GM will reset your position. It's not always the most convenient way to get the problem solved, but it prevents people from having another /spawn command.

Wow, I'm given so little credit around here...

EXCEPTION_ACCESS_VIOLATION at 696A4252

Crash Number: 69xxxxxx
Description: Crash on particles with Nvidia cards

Plus I'm now safe and sound in the Death Realm, so it's a map-thing.

Enabling "Vertex Buffer" in PlaneShift's setup may help you out with particles elsewhere as well (such as magic).

Actually I kind of like the idea of the start button but I would extend it to be able to start in any particular region where you character has already been and only have it enabled if the character has been off-line for some set amount of hours. This could be justified by assuming travel in the off-line hours and could also have the possibility of ending up in a random encounter someplace between where you logged off and where you chose to login. If such a thing were to be designed the places to which you might choose to start might be restricted by the duration of your being off line so that the next town over might be available after four hours and the town beyond that available after six. This would mean that if you play once per week you could likely start in any area you have been to before regardless of where you logged off. This is just an idle thought, of course freely given with no expectation of it ever being implemented. This would have the additional benefit of allowing all characters to participate in scheduled events at a specific place without having to spend hours prior to the event just getting to it once there are areas that are that far away.
