Assumption we all have broadband
« on: February 25, 2007, 11:06:08 am »
Ive noticed some of the members of this forum making quite a few posts along the lines of:

You can't say that this isn't great.

Not a personal attack on you Parallo in any way, just I saw you do it last and that prompted me.

My point is that people with poor bandwidth internet connections are excluded from this conversation because they have no way of finding out what this actually refers to.

I suggest people do, as came later in the same thread:

Here is a tune I used to play when I wanted to go out for a smoke. The Revealing Science of God from Tales From Topographic Oceans one of my all time favorite albums.

Now, it doesnt take much more typing, but it allows for everyone on these boards to see what is being talked about and not be reserved for the lucky ones with high speed net connections.

"May there only be peaceful and cheerful Earth Days to come for our beautiful Spaceship Earth as it continues to spin and circle in frigid space with its warm and fragile cargo of animate life."

I assume that most of us have broadband because most of us do, in fact, have broadband.
I suggest the statue of Laanx gets turned into a statue of Parallo <3. An NPC could never replace the huge hole he left in my heart when he died  :'(

I point you to the topic title again, I specifically say

Assumption we all have broadband
Which is clearly not the case.

Can't you just click the link and see the title of the video, and then read the comments and get the general idea?

That's what I do. Although I have broadband, my speakers have been raped and the whole thing crashes whenever I try to install any kind of flash player, so I'm in the same boat as you ;)

Well clearly I didn't assume that we all have broadband and therefore I'm not a good example for a thread about people that do.

I don't see how the devs or mods can do anything about your slow connection other than suggest you get a better connection. As such, I'm not understanding why this was posted in the complaint department.  I do see it more of a forum issues/post etiquette discussion, so that's where I put it.  :)

Unfortunately for you, times have changed and the norm is now at least DSL or higher.  I've always gone under the rule that it's best to gear stuff towards what ever the norm is.  Progressing technology can be fun, and it's unfortunate some get left behind in the process, but I think we do a decent job round here to support older technology to a degree.

I'm going to second this statement:

Im not asking them to do anything about my connection, But I was under the impression that the complaints section wasnt just about something the Devs or Mods can fix.

In order to keep the more general information boards more informative and on-topic, we have created a special forum just for complaining.  We would like complaints about features, changes in features, game play style, artwork, website, dev team unresponsiveness, how things aren't the way they used to be, how newbies are ruining the game for the oldbies, etc. to all be directed here.

Some of those cant be 'fixed' by Devs and Mods.

well, the game is aimed well below the norm of computer hardware, but that isnt the case im making. And you are probably right in what you say, its a etiqette thing, it would be nice if people could just type the few words that describe a link to high bandwidth content. As for DSL and Higher being the norm, that may be true in the US and large parts of Europe but the rest of the world isnt so lucky unfortunatly.

I suppose I could, but even just waiting for the page to load can take a fair amount of time.

@ Parallo, im going to be very refrained here, I made it very clear that I was not being vindictive in quoting you, as I said, its just the post that triggered this thought. Maybe you didnt assume ALL people have broad band, maybe you just dont care that some people are unable to see what you are refering to.

I din't say you were. I was quoted and upon giving reason I was told that the thread was about something else. Don't anger yourself.

Yeah, the malicious bastard :P

Basically, Idoru, I think you're buggered. I mean, my friend in Egypt even has DSL connection :P

Malice is different from inconsideration.

But yeah, I should get broadband, I know.

Actually just posting a link or even a link with the name could be insufficient as not everyone will know that "the Revealing Science of God" was a 22 minute track it might have been more considerate of me to make some mention of that although "going out for a smoke" might have been a clue. I think the point is well taken, though, that generally you should post some kind of description of what a link is so that people will be better able to decide if they want to click on it.
Aren't you glad I mentioned that first Allmann Bros clip was 300-odd megs, Idoru? After watching it it did not seem to be worth the download which is why I posted the youtube clips after it. Those at least you can partially dl to see if the rest is worth finishing.
