Sys Requirements - To get better or worse?
« on: March 13, 2003, 08:12:38 pm »
I am currently running a:

PIII 650mhz
192 RAM
8mb Rage Mobility

Currently I can barely run the game at all in OpenGL mode and \"Safe\" mode is really slow.

Should I give up now - or will the game become less demanding as it is developed and memory issues are fixed? (I know in the FAQ it says the PIII 600 is adequate, but it doesn\'t seem to work for me).

BTW - I think this game has lots of potention - great job guys, only wish I had a better comp.  :(
It\'s the only way to fly...

650mhz PIII
192MB RAM
8MB Rage Mobility

thats not a great comp, but it doesn\'t really matter right now.  I have an Athlon xp 1700, a 64mb Radoen LE,  256 ddr, and i still run this game terribly.
The program is why it is running so badly.

i think i\'m about between the two of you, but my comp is having some serious issues on it\'s own(does anyone know how to fix it when the silicon of your processor gets exposed to open air?) it works, but it\'s kinda flakey.  I belive the slowness(is that  word) is related to the memory leak problems, among other things.  they should have  a patch for it \'ere long.

Mine is so bad that it is a frozen screen that may change after 5 minutes.  But, yeah, the patch will be nice.

I\'m confident that things would only get better, altho since it\'s an open-source project it\'s hard to say when everything should be ready for production. I\'m on a Duron 1.2G, 384MB RAM, GF4MX440, and it\'s really quite choppy. I\'ve a feeling it\'s got to do with the lack of certain performance-tuning features - eg Distancing, loading of maps... and also cuz there may be huge chunks of code that\'s not quite coded optimally yet.

Still, I\'m quite sure that by the time the game\'s ready that everybody\'s system should be up to snuff with its demands. I noticed that while the Planeshift team was getting the server-side software ready that they spent quite a while fixing memory leaks which caused CPU usage to go through the roof.

These are just developmental stages and it\'s completely natural that things aren\'t running optimally, but it can only get better really.

I have now confirmed my belief that no matter how good your computer is Planeshift is going to destroy it.  My neighbor never leaves his house, but he has one damn good computer for doing that, here are specs:
P4 2.8ghz?
ATI Radeon 9000 128mb
2 GB DDR RAM
Windows XP Professional
DSL Connection

He got pretty much crap frame rates (by his standards) and a lot of disconnection, so yeah..
