Do these spells actually work?
« on: November 24, 2007, 08:08:06 am »
1) Flaming weapon
2) Electrotouch
3) Flame Spire
4) Rock Armor
5) Defensive Wind
6) Dazzling Light

System tells me that all of them do have some effect, but I have actually never seen any difference before and after casting them. The supporting attack spells (#1, #2, #3) should at least say for how much they are damaging the enemy, say,

>Your flaming weapon hurts the enemy for 12,34 damage!

or
>You injure your enemy with electricity for 12,34 damage!.

The supporting defense spells (#4, #5, #6) on the other hand should say that they block attacks, or how much damage they absorb. Like

>XYZ attacks you, but your Rock Armor blocks it!

or

>The spell Rock Armor averts 12,34 damage!

It's just hard to see if a spell works as it is now.

I know flame spire used to work, if you cast it several times and get something to attack you their health bar does go down.

this sounds like a feature request to me. Most spells do something it just might not be apparent what they really do right now, and it could/might change in the future.

Electrotouch should work, last time I checked it I dealed more damage with than without.

The rest I can't say for sure. Personally I'd rather not see numbers though, obviously all spells should work, if not they're bugged. But I'm against the quantification of effects. Judge the effects like we would in real life, by trial and error.

Defensive wind has always worked, afaik. The effect's always been mild but it does absorb some of the damage you receive and I also think it increases your defense rate a bit. You can have someone shoot an energy arrow at you with and without defensive wind on and you'll notice the difference.

I'm not a big fan of numbers either, but in system chat I wouldn't mind them ;-)

However, it might be that those spells are much more effective at lower levels of combat skills and stats, but on higher levels, the difference is pretty slim. The addtional damage you deal on level 100 sword with decent weapons is not noticeable with a supporting attack spell, so I was most unsure if these spells work at all. But if you all say they do, I shall keep casting them and hoping for an upgrade some day :P

The flame spire does damage independent of the weapon, with one you get a message when it deals damage, with two or more you get several messages in a row. That said my red way is feeble so it never did a lot.

if spells shouldnt have numbers, it should be the same with regular attacks. but since this is a game, I think numbers on both is better. after all, we cant notice everything the character does without a little help.

Having spoken from the past I actually went and tried this. Fighting a mercenary with the flame spire spell I got a status message that appeared to be due to it that was not the "your opponent takes a little damage from your flame spire" I expected. The message was "your attempt does not have any effect because the mercenary has no wounds." A little later after I changed to defensive from full defensive and actually hit her I got the message "The flame spire damages the attacker." At no time did the mercenary do any damage although she did hit me several times. This does not sound like it is working correctly, although it does sound like it is doing something.

Upon further play I am getting flame spire messages long after it should be done. It is not showing up in active magic although I wrongly tried to cast it with an opponent selected (on self casting only message) but it was not doing any damage anyway. I was using flame burst at the time to confuse matters more. You may be on to something Rongar. Some spells might have broke somehow.
