performance issues with effects and newer maps
« on: July 16, 2008, 11:17:37 am »
Since the latest update, i've been having major performance issues. A few things that come in mind (and that are also reported by some friends of mine) are:
Very high CPU usage in Ojaroad2, BDroad2 and Gugrontid. (cpu usage varies from 70-80% up to 100%)
Major issue with the use of (or being around with) campfires or torches. If i stay around it for a while, i really need to relog to get my character moving again, otherwise the game starts to be unplayable slow and hangs. i've played around with it and have noticed that putting away the fires isn't helping. You need to relog before the cpu usage and memory consumption goes away. (i've heard GM's say that's needed to cleanup ghost-fires, so that is confirmed)

I know the latest issue is a kind of normal. It's a graphics effect and expects to use more resources. Though, i think it's rather extreme on some pc's for some reason. I understand that the developpers need to implement some new things and we are in a way testers, since there is only one server for testing and playing. Therefor, i'm not expecting a fix soon for this. But i'd like to know if there's any way of reducing this issues by playing around with settings, or adapting some xml files perhaps.

In case this is usefull, and i think it is... i'm OpenSUSE Linux 11.0, KDE 3.5.9. My graphics card is an ATI radeon mobility X1300 with fglrx-drivers installed. CPU= Intel Core2Duo. Mem installed: 2GB

Greets, and see you in Yliakum  :)

The ghost-fires are already fixed in SVN :) A temporary solution is to rename/move the file "itemeffects.xml" in you PlaneShift/art folder.
Notice that this will remove all effects (fire/smoke/light) of campfires and torches but will give quite a performance boost in return.

Hope that helps. Good luck!

I'm also suffering from this. On my notebook I can hardly move on Ojaroad2 or Bdraod2 if I don't look straight down due to the high cpu usage. Haven't tried Gugrontid on it yet as I'm not around there often. But being forced to look straight down gets me lost. I can hardly recognize if I'm on plain ground or moving up a slope like that, mostly it's just a green/brown blur. :-o
This has only started in 0.4.01 so it must be some changes made to the maps.

On the other hand - plaza and winch work much better now than before. Plaza runs smooth even on my notebook where I could just slowly inch forward on the plaza at times. So perfomance got better in some maps, worse in others.

Hope one day all will be smooth. Hope dies last! :)
So much to do - and so little time...

Hehehe

Yeah, I have to say that Hydlaa plaza greatly improved too. Haven't tried Winch yet, since I don't often pass there.

To reply to the advice of disabling the effects... it helped improving performance as the effects just are disabled. That's one issue solved for now. Thanks!
