Zorbels First Wish
« on: October 04, 2008, 11:59:41 pm »
I have never entered a wish in the wish list the whole three and a half years I have been apart of this community. I have one finally.

My wish

NOTE: This wish was inspired by Proglin.

I wish for someone in the PlaneShift staff to have a position (or find a long standing player) that allows them to be the tournament holder in the arena (Basically Proglins old job, I know, I know, we can't replace our Proglin!). This way the only event they will focus on can be held once a month at least (Obviously these events take a great deal of planning and we would need someone who is dedicated to the game with a lot of game experince). If Talad or the GM's could approve a list of certain prizes the person who takes this position can alternate these prizes to be won. This way it isn't always the same thing.

This could also help those new to the game (and old) wanting to run events but not knowing where to start. The person choosen to do these tournament events can hire players to help with the tournament. Like the planning of the tournament, or simply taking certain jobs like RP the referee, or the character who you would buy your tickets from. They can be paid with both experience points and trias.

I also think it would be awesome for those who do attend but don't actually participate in the tournament get some experince points. Why? Well you can't tell me that sitting down to watch a tournament wouldn't give you ideas on how to perfect your fighting style. Even for someone who isn't necessarily a fighter. They would still learn from what they see.

It is just a start of an idea and needs lots of thought and work. The reason this is my wish is because I loved having tournaments to look forward too. It brought huge amounts of players together and we all could have fun in type of event. Proglin proved it could be successful and I think we should revive those tournaments. It helps add just a little more to the game and it is a great way for players to interact with one and other.

So what do you think community?

Very good wish Zorbels. I love the idea. I only wish Proglin could do one more for me being I never had the chance to attend one of his. I would be in the cheering section for sure no matter who does it though. It sounds like fun.

Isn't Orgon currently the champion, though? I seem to remember him being declared such in a previous event, not too very long ago... ;)

OPSIE! Neko pointed out that I have actually made another wish! I totally forgot about this! I still think it would be a good idea so I shall post it in this thread along with my fake first wish!  ;D

Yes, Eurac is a great example. Glad he's still around!  :)

I just want to see the challenges between players and groups of people cheering again. I remember one tournament where a player RPed selling tee-shirts, while another was selling beverages.  We even had a little betting booth for those brave enough to bet their trias on who they thought would come out on top.  There was also a little section in the arena where players could watch the fights but play dice. I think there was even some face painting going on. The way these players put their all into it made it seem real. It was amazing at the amount of work that went into these tournaments but it really brought the players together no matter what flavor and there was always something to do.

I really hope that someone with the authority to do it will consider this wish. I think it is important to the PlaneShift players and just adds that extra fill that PlaneShift needs in my opinion.

It's a nice idea zorbels and yeah i agree to what you've said

i'm also missing parts of old, if i was just brave enough i'd start some oddish tournament like in the olden days but todays critisism puts me off greatly
anyway hope something like this starts to evolve if not in the light then maybe in the shade ;D

Bah, don't let the criticism get to you. Some people just want to nitpick - that shouldn't get in the way of you doing evens if you want to.

now that sounds like fun... can we have a tournament where you aren't allowed to spare your opponent's life after you defeat him? haha, that would be great.

I nominate Zan for the position.  I know of no one better to fill the shoes of Proglin, and knowing him I think Proglin would agree with me.  The Hydlaa Festival of the Hunt was great fun for those that recall it and Zan was the one who pulled it off.  It was a great event and someone who can pull of something like that deserves a post of this nature.

Nothing stops players from doing this. It was organized by players before (not GMs) and players can take care of it again.

So, you can consider your wish granted if you get the community to work on it. :)

I'm not saying GMs won't help, but we're not really needed for this to take place.

We need to work as a team and I am sure this can become a noteworthy event as it was once before no matter who runs it. Maybe because it was Zorbel’s wish I can nominate her to make this her event. I am sure it will be great!

Make a list of people who would be good for this.  Then pm them to schedule  a time to meet in game and roleplay the choseing of the person to be in charge of the event.  Then start to plan the tournament out inside of the game.
Why should I speak, if no one speaks?  Why should I approach, if no one approaches?  Why should I hear, if no one hears?

Your right! Sadly it seems the players aren't doing this because I haven't seen one thread with a good tournament set up in a long while, as a matter of fact since Proglin left the community. I have seen attempts and fails. I am not sure if it is lack or commitment from the community, to scared to try due to people picking things apart on the forums or lack of support or perhaps people don't feel they can fill the shoes of proglin? Whatever it is I am not seeing the players making this happen. (Sorry just being realistic :S and calling it like it is)

I was looking for something more offical. The PlaneShift staff to back up a player who deserves this title (giving them an offical title) so that when they are logged into the world of PlaneShift people know this person was approved by the PlaneShift staff or Talad himself. This tournament holder would also have rules and guidelines (as the GM's do) and would be responsible for running at least one tournament per mounth. I think people would respect this person much more if they knew the PlaneShift staff had made room for this position. Besides players can't give out experience points and prizes. Only those with authority in PlaneShift can. The players are some what limited. We kind of need that part to make it a little more realistic and people would probably want to participate more. If it is just a regular player they may not have the best weapons to give as prizes and they might find it overwhelming to give the players something to lure them to come and play. Proglin even had some rough times and even wanted to quit at certain points because his hands were always tied. I am trying to wish that issue away. :) I know it can be done.

I don't have the time unfortantly (it takes alot of work and planning for these sorts of events if you want it done right), not only that but I was never good at that sort of thing. It just isn't my bag. I like to participate in it, not run it. Thanks for the vote of confidence though!

hmm

one suggestion then.

Post a general Contest.

Im not very old in this game so i dont know peak hours of activity

but choose a saturday evening for america/europe and Invite every one to gather at the arena for Best of the Best contest.
Does not need to be prizes.

Arena's are all about the glory
and saying yeah i took out that many people before i got taken out.

Perhaps run two shifts a big Free for all (i think it would be nice to have a GM for a wee while , that can change a zone to a Open attacking zone or something)
would be very chaotic and interesting to watch.

as for a proper tournament of elimination.

just let the players work it out.

if someone wants to be a jerk and go nah nah i didnt loose , they will get a very bad rep , because of all the people watching it go down.

So I feel it has a 85% chance of working out , just leaving it upto the players.

So every1 piles into the arena or above to spectate.

when you loose a duel you go up stairs or sulk back to town. (or be stubborn and be known as a jerk )

all that needs to happen is a formal time set in the forums , and some notices and word of mouth spread around in game
