For a final word on the PLer vs. RPer for Laanx, I just realized, that decision actually has very little to do with whether you're an RPer or PLer. The new server is meant as a fresh start for the dev team to make new features/fix bugs. The clean server makes these things easier. And you need people to TEST these things. Pure RPers do very little to test things. If you send RPers over there, testing/bug-finding/fixing will be much slower. Making the server for NON-RPers will lend it the backbone of testers that it needs. It has nothing to do with how hard you work. Tester first, player second.

One thing I am wondering about is will the new server use the same in-game message boards, new ones or not have them allowed at all. Will it have its own forum section?

I propose to "lock" the names on both servers cross-wise.
- avoid abuse of character names by other players ("Hey, you insulted me?" - "No, that was my bad twin.")
- avoid mixing up of worlds and characters ("Hey, what world are we talking off?")
If someone wants the same name on both servers, a GM can check if the person is the same for both accounts and allow the name on demand.

This would be almost impossible as the data for each character is seperate, sorry i dont see the devs ever taking the time to banname each and every char made on either server and cross check it, the purpose of this server was not to cause the devs or gms more work then they already have.
I understand. I thought you could use one table in the database for both servers somehow. I do not know your code good enough ;) However, I think it should be possible to make a name request to both data bases at character creation? So by default, if a character is created, the name is inserted in the table of the corresponding server data base, but will not be available on the other server. If people insist on having a character with the same name on both servers, they still could ask for that (I know this is still work for the devs/GMs).
However after having talked to different persons already, this is what I think will happen: Many players will create two accounts, one for each server to avoid the above mentioned abuse. In my opinion, this will create an overhead in the data bases. Also, I fear that forums will be spammed with messages like "I hereby announce that the character X on server Y has nothing to do with my character Y on server X which is related to my forum account Z". I hope there is a way to prevent such confusion in advance?

sorry dont expect any of that any time soon or ever. No it is not possible as the servers are not running on the same machine and the client only can connect to one server at a time.

Orgonwugh... what you are asking for is difficult to do in real time. It is nearly impossible to do this as a batch job on a schedule though too. It is not impossible, just not worth the effort right now. If the servers remain completely independent, that is good for all of us. If we tie them together for certain things... then if one goes down... the other is either limited in functionality or down too.

The easiest work-around is to register your character name on both servers if you plan on playing on both. I don't really assume names on the forums match peoples in-game characters... many have different forum handles just so people don't tie them to a particular in-game character. *shrug*. It is a small price to pay on our end, making the character on both servers, compared to the significant effort it would require on the devs part for this. I hope, like in my initial post here, that challenges to character names would be allowed for a certain amount of time in the event someone tried to use a character name on laanx on the new server before you could register it.

Sometimes, people can be minding their own business and driving along. Some will be off to work, others will be working as the drive, and still others are out for the pure joy of the drive. There comes times when those involved in this commute of life when perhaps someone was not paying enough attention to what others around him are doing, and they are doing the same. Lanes can be crossed accidentally, caution signs ignored, wrong turns taken, intentions misunderstood, and speed limits broken. Collisions happen; fender-benders to feelings and pride.

Please don't let this be the reason the game dies. This is the only game that's even held my wavering interest this long.

Okay, doomsayers, the game isn't going to die.  Look at it this way!

Laanx is the main server.

The new server is the test server.

Aaaaand, that's it.  Granted, Laanx still is a test server but the new server is more just about the game mechanics.  Go be whatever you want on the new server, as long as you do some testing.  Real RP, the world of Yliakum will be on Laanx.  Nobody -has- to move.  Some just may feel more welcome on the new server.  This is not a RP and a PL server, this is a main server and a test server.

It's not going to kill the game, it'll change some dynamics and possibly speed up progress.  It'll give people something to do when they don't want to RP or deal with other people RPing all around them.  It's a relaxed, test server.

Be happy, be well, be not-crazy-paranoid :P

Laanx will be a RP server, yes.  But -the- RP server implies an equal and opposite server of which there is none.  There is simply a test server.

OK Ladies & gents, time for an update and a few clarifications:

UPDATE:

The new server is not yet ready. We ran into a small bump in the road, but are still aiming to make it active and available in the next few hours. This is conditional on the availability of some very sleep-deprived and dedicated devs. Give em props when you see em!

Until we do get it up and running, if we find anyone logged in who is not on the team, they will be asked to log off and their account deactivated. This is to prevent potentially BIG messes from happening while the engine gurus are loading data, etc. Please be patient with us. If you were bit overeager, logged on, and got deactivated, you should know that player accounts that were deactivated will be reactivated when the server goes live.

When the server is available to players, we will announce it in this thread and on #planeshift in IRC.

CLARIFICATIONS:

RP is not DISCOURAGED on either server. It is allowed & welcomed on both. However, RP conventions (such as the "no real-life names" policy) will not be ENFORCED on ezpcusa as they are on laanx. This means that OOC disruptions to RP will not monitored by the GMs, and that petitions about such will not be managed, only closed. So, RPers may find their flow disturbed a bit more by the occasional "LOL" on expcusa.

Rules of conduct and common courtesy do still apply to both servers - no abusive language, no cursing, etc. This is a rather obvious statement I know, but I thought it bore reinforcing.

Yes, new features will more than likely be implemented on ezpcusa first before being activated on laanx, so in this particular respect, ezpcusa will be more of a "testing server" than laanx.  Then again this is a game in development, so it's pretty much all testing at this point ;)

Take care, and see you soon on the new server!

This is really interesting. I have never heard certain parties sounding scared before. Seems like a cusp period, things should settle down after a while, everyone just breathe...
