@novacadian reason? you can filter them easily with grep.
Many of the reasons have been
covered previously. So instead of going over all that again allow me to explain the outcome of that discussion.
For a while a grep filtering was used; placing the filtered files in a subdirectory. This was done manually and like many practises it became less regular over time; to the point that it would often be done only when looking for something in the logs which was made difficult due to the
majority of the logs being OOC. As a side note, this only became an issue once joining a Guild which also brought in two other Guilds' chatter via an Alliance channel.
It got to the point that the practise came to an end and log files were rarely used for anything.
To be sure a cron job could have been put in place to call a Perl script to perform the task. Yet can that be expected from an average user? That excuse is not mine; as it
could have been done; yet for whatever degree of
distraction/lazyness/must get to that sometime excuses it was not. If it had been a simple tick in the client configuration it most certainly would have been taken care of.
The effect of having to
give in to turning on the Guild and Alliance channels (as they were going to my log files anyway and were often monitored with tail -f <logfile> in a terminal window which also took me out of full screen mode loosing a great deal of immersion) removed an immersion to the game that existed when first starting to play PS that was never found again.
It is my feeling that this has eventually turned me into an
occational player. Is that a bad thing or just an evolution? Not sure. It has lead me to finally getting out of daily play and getting around to things like compiling the PS server on my machine. That shall, hopefully, lead to some PS hacking. Perhaps the first order of business will be to implement
Aiwendil's
code suggestions of how to implement my wish.
Just in case that does not happen it seemed like this thread was a good one to declare my top 5 ideas to be implemented. It is my feeling, for me at least, that not having this feature had far reaching results of robbing me of the game immersion which was felt when first joining PS. It is a non-scientific observation and perhaps that would have happened anyway. With my suggestion installed it would have, most likely, taken longer to happen in the very least.
