Lol, I'm sorry Catlemur, but I see no way this could bring about racism, and it would only bring about discrimination if there were enough people without consciouses. Anyways, my view is that we were fine as a community without Karma, and from what I see, the possibility for failure is low with this Karma system.
Personally I don't really care though either way.

Some (more sensitive) people may care though, so if it is possible, you could give people the choice of showing Karma or not. If you are unable to give people this choice, then I'd say to turn it off. I'd prefer people not being 'hurt' by a dumb little number.

In this other forum, karma was some sort of 'forum level'. The higher your karma is, the more access you gain in the forums.... IE - if you have 10 + karma, a secret new 'category' will pop up. This category wouldn't be super important, I believe all the important ones should be seen by everybody. But it would be a sort of category for those who have pitched in good ideas.
If you gain karma by pitching good ideas, then I think more people would start posting cool new ideas to get to this new category.
It doesn't necessarily have to be a category either, you can also do others like IE - be 'invisible' (no one can see you are on-line), See those who are invisible, see everyone who has been on-line today. Etc etc...
I think the last level should be VIP where you gain access to a lot of hidden stuff in the forum.

If the karma doesn't do anything, I don't see what the point of it being here is.

Because people are starting to point out potential problems, instead of pointing to current problems, my suspicion is that things will be better since there's only positive Karma. If people start getting rewards for Karma, things might get more complex.

When we tried it before and things went bad, it was because negative points were activated. A number of nice people ended up getting really bad scores, so it was decided that the system was being misused. Maybe things will be different since people can only be nice to each other?

Another good reason for negative karma is to punish people suspected of having their karma excessively inflated -- Soloyos...
Then again, people might just really like his pictogram puzzles.

Hey I have an idea. If someone starts up a sock puppet account on the forums to make outrageous posts they should be banned. Oh ... Wait ...  ... That's what I am.

The Karma counter seems to te overall karma then even though we can only add + to people.

Seeing as negative karma was only available for about a day or two, I'm guessing they decided not to erase everyone's karma points when they made the switch.  I mean, how much negative karma could one receive in two days?

(36476 total members * 2)-2=72950, theoretically. Of course that is if there were no new accounts and every other account smote you. I'd say at least a good 30k of those accounts are lost -- probably more too -- but with a good auto-bot creating accounts who knows how many smites one person could generate. As far as I can see each account can only modify another's karma once per twenty four hour period.

Don't you just hate people who answer rhetorical questions and wish you could smite them?

I'll PM you later about our plot to create the army of auto-bots, and karma-smite anyone who crosses us so low, they'll be in imaginary numbers.

It was being ignored by most and gamed by others. You are a fine contributer but you are not twice as good as anyone actually associated with the team.

I have nothing against anyone here personally, this should not be considered a personal slight against you, Soloyos. The karma system on Slashdot is a better way to go. Karma is applied to specific posts and then tallied to the poster. People with bad karma are unable to vote. Last I looked that software was open source too, but the book I had about it -- quite old now -- made it seem kind of complicated. I has grown more complicated now, a few years later.
