Game Keeps Crashing
« on: August 21, 2012, 09:56:39 pm »
The game keeps crashing. I took the suggestion by disabling sound, but it didn't help much. Lowering the graphics helped a bit, but the crashes still occurred. I currently can't play now because once I log back in, it'll crash even if I don't move my character.

Did you let the launcher update to the latest version after installing?

Did you clear the shader cache once?

Which graphic chipset do you have, which operating system, which driver version? — Always the same questions we keep asking over and over...

I have a Windows 7 Alienware laptop. My driver version is 10.1.0.1008, Intel ® Mobile Express Chipset SATA AHCI Controller. I am a bit confused by the computer terms, but hopefully that's what you asked. I have a 64 bit laptop and downloaded the game in 64 bit, so I don't think that's the problem.

Yes. Should be updated. Clearing the shader cache didn't help much. But... I auto assumed PlaneShift was running on high-performance NVIDIA processor. Apparently, it wasn't so I ran it by doing it manually, and PlaneShift ran smoothly again. So, I had my problem fixed.

But another problem occurred after I went idle for a couple of minutes. I returned to find the server doesn't work anymore and told me to relogin 5 minutes later. That froze everything though on my laptop, and Microsoft was doing that troubleshooting problem saying I should change my Windows... graphics? To Windows basic because my computer was running slow? Or something. I don't remember. But I ignored it and kept my regular settings. Then, my whole laptop desktop changed the size of my wallpaper and text making everything bigger. Then I had to shut down my laptop and everything went back to normal.

I'm a bit afraid to log back into PlaneShift :sweatdrop:.

SATA and AHCI are related to harddisks, not graphics.

But I fear ... you will probably have intel HD integrated graphics. Bad choice for OpenGL games. The intel OpenGL graphic drivers are crap.

You mention Nvidia too, so you have both graphic chipsets? ... Then you suffered the automatical selection of the worse, I believe. Good to know that the manual selection of Nvidia helped.

Many players don't recommend playing PlaneShift in fullscreen mode... although it should be supported better now. But a failing server (which is not too unusual) should not mess up graphics. Strange thing.

Alienware usually come with high end graphic cards though.

Catrina: Make sure that you have the latest Nvidia driver: http://nvidia.com/Drivers
Don't rely on the preinstalled stuff.

Thanks for the suggestions and help!
