OK did something change???
« on: July 13, 2003, 06:58:24 pm »
Ok i have only been with PS since january, at that time i memorized the site and storyline, features, etc. well. on thing that attracted me the most was that PS was skill based.Over the last few months i have heard more and more coments, pertaing to classes like \"well i think the theif type should be able to sucj and such\" or \"the wizad typeshouldn\'t be able to blablasorry\" Now sorry for the rudeness but Are these people just stupid or is this no longer a skill based game?

It will totally be a skill based game. As I see it from the current Character Creation process, classes such as Rogue or Wizard or Warrior are just a pre-made option, a quick setup for those who don\'t want to take the time to properly personalise their characters.

Of course, I could be wrong, but that\'s how it is right now. :)

Well, its still skill-based, but I think that people wants to identify themselves with classes. Most people have never tried a skillbased game, since most RPG is extremely \"classed\". I hope that this game will break that pattern. I hope that PS will lead the way for a new wave of MMORPGS. I hope that PS will attract many players, I know that PS will attract many players.

Right!
With a skill-based game one could be a Wizard-cook-marksman if he (or she) wanted to.

I\'d like to become some sort of ranger/animal trainer mix. :)

I know the game is skill based, but going up in certain skills would have to penalize others so you can only combine certain types of skills to an extent.  Being able to level up in all skills and be omnipotent would be horrible since it defeats the purpose of making parties and unbalances the game, that is something you only do in a single player RPG game.  Coz\' it woud just be pretty dumb if someone leveled up real high in attack and healing magic, since they are counter-active.  You could only use attack spells and more neutral spells well, or healing spells and neutral spells well instead say.  Or you could use guide spells and nothing else well!  And the higher the magic level the more difficult it is the level up in skills like heavy armour and weapons.   You will have to be  a \"class\" in the game, you just get to make up the class on your own.  I don\'t know if they are doing that, but I\'m assuming they would because it would be outright idiotic from a design standpoint not to.
Ninjas have feelings too.  Mostly they feel like dancing.

Well of course it should always be better to level up in skills that are related to eachother.. like for example all the magical skills, and alchemy and the sort... or stealth and climbing and such..

In other words, skills should be associated with eachother so that you would create the best character by increasing the skills that are closest to eachother.. So that some sort of \"Class\" would be enforced, even though you could choose to be a wizard-fighter-cook-beastmaster just by increasing the appropriate skills, your character would be versatile, but not as powerful as those who increase their \"related skills\"

Well personally I find the classing for Dungeon Siege is brilliant ... You can choose to be whatever you want .. Its great .. Less time thinking .. more time playing ...

That way a player can be skilled in the skills he wishes .. Such in my case My character in DS was skilled in melee and combat magic ... Great mix but hard to tame...

I also found leveling in Dungeon Siege enjoyable.

The way that, if you focused on raising your nature magic level to 50 before even attempting to level anything else, your other stats (strength/dex I mean, not skills) would take HOURS to increase just one level, meaning you\'re now a mage and there\'s nothing you can do about it :P.

That\'s why you had to think very carefully about what your char is doing at all times, while the simplicity of having just 4 skills and 3 stats leveled the fun out nicely.

However, PS is obviously going to be very different. You\'ll have tonnes of classes, complete character creation freedom, FAR more than a few stats and skills to work on... and the best thing is, you don\'t even have to go on a murder spree just to gain XP.

It all sounds very complex and I think the developers have a difficult journey ahead of them to ensure that the fun stays there aswell. Don\'t get me wrong, I love leveling and tradeskilling, but there has to be that delicate balance that keeps it from becoming repetetive or predictable (just like Dungeon Siege in the end).

I have every faith in them. :)

Maybe this is just an idea PS is a skills based system right depending on what skills your character has PS could generate a little name for it kind of like a class but not so if for some odd reason you put all your skill points onto stealth based skills as well as if you always stole stuff from people it would come up with theive if you always assainated giuld members silently it comes up with assasin etc

True, but might that possibly limit the personalisation and amount of classes one could be titled, assuming that the PS team doesn\'t traul through an entire dictionary adding every class type there could possibly be? This would also take a heckload of calculation and time and would have to be extremely accurate.
