Why are there so many Guilds?
« on: July 26, 2003, 07:23:20 pm »
I have been looking around, looking for a guild to join and the further I was in my first \"quest\" I started to wonder why there are so many guilds?

Does PlaneShift really need as much guilds as it has Role Player\'s?

I do not understand why anyone would create a new \"Evil Guild\" (which in fact isn\'t Evil because most people don\'t know wat Evil means) if there already is one. It would be much easier to just join the existing Evil Guild.
And this is not only happening with Evil Guild\'s, there are too many guilds of any sort you can think of.(except a Good Thieve Guild ;-))

It would be much more interesting and challenging if there would be about 10 large guilds, with different alignments and several small guilds that would have to cooperate to not be overwhelmed by the power of the large guilds. Small guilds would be more specialized while the large guilds would have too much members to be specialized. That means large guilds would have to hire small guilds to do very specific jobs. (when two large guilds are waging war on each other they could use the specialism of a smaller guild)

Anyway, this is wishful thinking because there are too many people who think having a guild is cool. And, which is worse, they are absolutely not gifted with leadership qualities.

But I\'m interested how other people would like the guild-system to work.

Hummm Thanks man  :(
Or maybe you meant a Good Aligned thief Guild ?

Anyway, there are many guilds because there are many players who want to start their own guild. And there is no guild number limit (yet?). I don\'t see why it s so hard to understand.

Yes, I meant Good Aligned. :-)

It is in fact easy to understand why there are so many guilds, so maybe my thread title isn\'t that well chosen. What I meant was that I don\'t understand why one would like to have his own guild , while in most cases that guild will miserably fail in his goal because of bad management. (yes, management in medieval times ;-))

I like your idea about larger guilds using smaller ones specialization (actually i heard it before, but i still like it ;))

Yea, i think some people should think twice before starting their own guild...

I think there are 3 main factors to the high number of guilds.

1) There isn\'t much to do yet, so people have enough time to start their own guild. And with your own guild, you can make all your own choices, without someone above you in control.
2) Guilds don\'t really do anything yet. When PS grows and guilds get to play a real role, you\'ll see a natural selection. Better organized guilds will simply destroy or outcompete other guilds. At the moment, there\'s no way for one guild to really influence another, so it\'s free play.
3) Everybody wants to make some sort of impact on PS. For a lot of people that means that they want to start a guild now that the game is still in early development, so when the game goes \'public\', they\'ll have a stong, old and important guild.

I don\'t think that this high amount of guilds is a real problem. Some of them are bound to turn into a well organized and important guild, some probably already are. For all the guilds that fail, at least their leaders will have had their chance to try and hopefully learn from their mistakes.

But I admit, it\'s a bit confusing at the moment, I had the same problem. When I started, I looked around and the only idea I really liked was that of the BISM (which isn\'t a guild). I initially wanted to join the BISM and then relax and look for a guild to join, but in the end I like the BISM so much I didn\'t need a guild anymore. I\'m even on the council now and i enjoy every minute of it. :)

Although I agree with most of what say I cannot say that I think large numbers of guilds won\'t be a problem. For if the reason to start a guild is to make an impact on PlaneShift those small, poorly led guilds will try to do anything to be noticed. And one guild that just ravages through Planeshift isn\'t much of a problem, but 50 guilds will be.

well, guild halls had better be damned expencive and time consuming to make to keep every guild that pops up from creating fortresses and such

Guild needs at least 10 members and a website to become official.
I don\'t think unofficial guids will be allowed to build guild buildings ...

I agree that there should be rules to keep tiny guilds from taking over the entire world of PS. But those rules should not keep people from starting a guild, just that they have to meet certain requirements (nr. of members, homepage, \'active time\') to fullfill any active role in-game.

So I\'d say, let everybody a who wants to start a guild do so, as long as there are rules to make sure they don\'t become a nuisance.

Good question indeed. The simple answer would be cause ppl are annoing and everyone wants an easy way out. Here is an idea, let\'s ALL start a guild, then everyone would be happy. Half of these pathetic excuses for a guild won\'t last for long, so in the end it will all be the way god intended.
Let me tell you a story. Once there was this \"person\" who said, ha, I am smarter then most, or he thought, and he started a guild. Long story short, 6 months down the road, 30+ members later (more then half of who were inactive), and blah blah, the work was too much, so he said screw it. I don\'t even see the point anymore of starting anything, more work for you, and the benefits are still unknown.
