New MMORPG
« on: October 07, 2003, 12:42:43 am »
I started planning a free MMORPG similar to PlaneShift. I need programmers, artists, 3D modelers, and anything else. If you are interested in joining the team or know of a good 3D engine please reply.
AKA Arioth.   In PlaneShift my name is Arioth

You may have better luck on some game developer sites.  Try :

http://www.gamedev.net
http://www.flipcode.net
http://www.gamasutra.com

If you want to use the PS engine with Crystal Space then we may be able to help you out.

And you expect that after posting this, all those \"programmers, artists, 3D modelers, and anything else\" will start begging you if they can join your team ? Developing a MMORPG is a huge task that requires big amount of enthusiasm, motivation, patience, organizational and development skills. Sorry, but you don\'t appear as someone who can be taken seriously. You have probably little idea what are you talking about.

agreed. you might also want to know want you want before asking.  you need a list of waht the game should be or waht you are going for.

I\'m wondering if he read the Planeshift website, because once I saw Planeshift I stopped *buying* computer games because I don\'t see how anything out there can come even close to PS.  Of course, if he does have a great idea and the will to go through with it, no one should stop him.

I agree, Planeshift has completely ruined me on other games, I can\'t find the time to play anything else, nowadays...

But MMORPGs and MUDs have always interested me, like no other genre has.  Too bad they\'re all so mainstream nowadays (I\'m looking at you, SWG) that they forgot the group of people who were the only market for this whole genre; RPG geeks!  Planeshift obviously is differant; its infused with the spirit of free software, which is quite refreshing, if I do say so myself.

Personally, I\'d love to see hundreds of free, GPL MMORPGs spring up; if Planeshift has shown us anything, its shown us that freedom is indeed possible in MMORPGs.  If you told me 5 years ago that I\'d be playing a free open-source MMORPG, I\'d most definatly call you a liar; how would such a monstrous task be accomplished by a measly group of volunteers, and who in their right mind would give it away for free, with source?  And now, amazingly, I\'m playing one.

My dream for the 21st century, is, and has always been, that the phrase \"open-source\" will enter the vocabulary of every computer user with internet access.  Few programs will be closed-source, and those that are would be trivial, anyway.  Our world (at least our virtual world) would be so much nicer if that was true... Imagine Windows with the stability and security of Linux.  Of course, its all a dream.  It\'ll never happen, or at least not in my lifetime.

Anyway, back on topic.  Good luck, Niko, I hope to play your game some day.  As for what engine you should use, among Crystal Space and OGRE, based on reading OGRE\'s manual, I\'d say its easier to use than CS, although it has less features (its just graphics, whereas CS has included sound and networking, unless I\'m mistaken).  But it seems like it would be quite slow, although I haven\'t used it yet.  Of course, there are literally hundreds of other choices...  You could even go Dorb\'s path and code your own, although that\'s not entirely reccommended.

What the hell ppl !?  Crazed fan alert!!!!

PS is a great game but it has yet to prove itself. I cannot complain about the graphics (by any standard they are marvellous) nor the concept and/or the earnestness of the devs or the community. But I have been around long enough to see games that hyped and hyped but fizzled when it came to gameplay.

To become a really great game PS will first of all cease to be a memory hog. Then the fair rule system will need to be implemented (and by fair I mean where PKing is allowed almost eveywhere except where absolutely uneccesary like the spawning zones or the market place, Pstealing freely allowed but rolls very high, among other things.). Then it will need a huge and extremely complex world which I do believe the devs are looking to create but I doubt the feasibility. And lastly it will need efforts and enthusiasm from the gaming community of which I see no dearth here.

Personally I also hope that planeshift turns out to be all we ever wanted and more, but I have learned to discern hype from the truth.

So I am currently playing \'The Great Escape\'. And I intend to play more PS or no PS. Great hopes might bring greater dissapointment.

Anyhow as a parting note i\'d like to point out that blaming the devs doesnt help. Its not like we\'re paying them to work or anything. If they give us a good game we should be grateful and if a lousy one we should say \"Oh! Well\" and move on. The best thing we can do is help out. Personally I am trying to get server space donated but anything concrete has yet to materialize.

Thank you for your patience.

ps-
dont get all worked up about free sourcing everything. Programming is a full time job and programmers have families to feed too. Somethings no doubt, but most things? I question the wisdom of that..........

Bah, open-source and free software doesn\'t imply free monatarily.  Freedom in the context of open-source is rights, the right to own and modify source code, which is always a Good Thing.  Commerical open-source is a viable option, most likely not through the GPL, but some other, stricter license.  Take PS for example, if the devs wished, they could easily charge us but keep the source open; although it is a special case, because the art isn\'t open and it requires you to connect to a server, as the client software is useless without it.

Maybe I am a \"crazed fan\", I don\'t know... I just think its an exciting project.

Who\'s blaming the devs?  I\'ve think they\'ve done a TREMENDOUS job over the years working on Planeshift.  I mean, these folks aren\'t even getting paid for all their hard work; the only thing they get out of it is to see a great idea become reality.

I am extraordinarily grateful for all their hard work and effort in putting together something that everybody can enjoy for free.  I know that once PS gets to more of a finished state, there will be a lot of newcomers who will just jump into the game and think it\'s just the greatest thing since sliced bread.

But we\'re here now, and a lot of us have been here awhile, and we\'ve heard from the devs in their many postings and conversations.  We know it\'s not easy for them.  We know this isn\'t their paid job.  We can understand why we will never get a sure release date.

We will all be grateful not just that there is an awesome game out there that everyone can play for free, but that there is an awesome game out there created by a group of dedicated people with a dream.
