I agree, Planeshift has completely ruined me on other games, I can\'t find the time to play anything else, nowadays...
But MMORPGs and MUDs have always interested me, like no other genre has. Too bad they\'re all so mainstream nowadays (I\'m looking at you, SWG) that they forgot the group of people who were the only market for this whole genre; RPG geeks! Planeshift obviously is differant; its infused with the spirit of free software, which is quite refreshing, if I do say so myself.
Personally, I\'d love to see hundreds of free, GPL MMORPGs spring up; if Planeshift has shown us anything, its shown us that freedom is indeed possible in MMORPGs. If you told me 5 years ago that I\'d be playing a free open-source MMORPG, I\'d most definatly call you a liar; how would such a monstrous task be accomplished by a measly group of volunteers, and who in their right mind would give it away for free, with source? And now, amazingly, I\'m playing one.
My dream for the 21st century, is, and has always been, that the phrase \"open-source\" will enter the vocabulary of every computer user with internet access. Few programs will be closed-source, and those that are would be trivial, anyway. Our world (at least our virtual world) would be so much nicer if that was true... Imagine Windows with the stability and security of Linux. Of course, its all a dream. It\'ll never happen, or at least not in my lifetime.
Anyway, back on topic. Good luck, Niko, I hope to play your game some day. As for what engine you should use, among Crystal Space and OGRE, based on reading OGRE\'s manual, I\'d say its easier to use than CS, although it has less features (its just graphics, whereas CS has included sound and networking, unless I\'m mistaken). But it seems like it would be quite slow, although I haven\'t used it yet. Of course, there are literally hundreds of other choices... You could even go Dorb\'s path and code your own, although that\'s not entirely reccommended.
