Player businesses. Please read.
« on: March 08, 2002, 10:22:50 pm »
This might have been emntioned before.
I would like to see player owned businesses. There would be a few bugs that would have to be worked out. Like suppliers of goods. Either you should buy them from players who craft or smith them, or you could buy them from built-in in game suppiers, which would probably be the way to go, much simpler and more reliable. The sucsess of your business would depend on how many customers bought goods there, and that would depend on the prices you set, and other factors, like quality of goods. Different suppliers would have better or lower quality of goods. Perhaps at first all you could afford would be the cheap stuff, until you had the money to really get going. And as you got more wealth you could hire NPC workers, and would always have one to replace you when you were away.

Costs would include-

-Cost of building.

-Cost of goods.

-Cost of workers. (perhaps also hire player c. as employees, paid by hour. perhaps not, though)
A fool and his head are soon parted.

Or similar to UO there could be player vendors, these were NPC vendors that stocked items that a specific player would give to them to sell, the vendor would require a small upkeep in gold, but any profits would go to the player when he came around to collect the funds from any items sold, this allowed for player run market places, without everyone having to be logged on.

Vendors is a great idea.. there was an idea that was brought up before, on the thread
\"what happens when u logout\"
and one idea was that your char turns into this npc , which other players can talk to, but not attack.

when u log out like this, people come up to you, and can pick the option \"Buy\".
then they would see your pre-defined selling stock, and can buy items from you (that u wish to sell).

maybe vendors is a better idea, cuz eveyone know their exact location, and they are on all the time.. but its a waste of server space to have that many npcs with diffrent styles (right devs ? )

so maybe i will support that u turn to a npc when u logout

BUT ITS A GREAT IDEA, tho

shops woud be cool..but a waste of time if u ask me...i mean....i o noting cept make money..if thats ur bag then fine. i wish u good luck in ur business..

but if u plan on opening a smithing shop and making all ur own weapons.then that woud be cool...but if u won tuse your own skill i see no point in opening a shop.

And lazy risk takers could just loot and plunder their way through life. this would also make bounty hunters necassary...

a fun profension could be city guard though it would be easy to become corrupt and then bribes may be neccasary.

And then there is every ones favorite, con man

in the faq it says that you can buy shops if you have enough money :D
I don\'t see the point in owning a shop if you cant even use it to sell stuff :/

I think it would be cool to rent a booth in the market and sell you stuff there so you only own it for a day or so.  It would cost so much a day or hour.  So if you only sell your stuff every so often you don\'t need to own a shop to sell some stuff.

I haven\'t read the other posts, but the idea of being a merchant/being a vendor/having npc vendor is being carefully discussed.

I really like the idea of being able to become a merchant-type character.  I was thinking this originally, because I have always been a fan of spellcasting characters.  But then, I came across Planeshift, and I learned about real RPG\'s (I\'ve never played one before).
One of the first things I always read about was that the goal in an RPG is not to try to kill everything else in the game, but rather to make a name for yourself and gain a reputation.  So I thought, what better way to become famous than to have a store!
I figured, for in Planeshift, I could start by using alchemy skills to make potions and sell them to people as a way to start making money.  Then I could buy armor and stuff and get some experience in the caverns and such.
So I think that the most logical progression of being a merchant would be:
1) Just sell items to other players out on the street to start making money
2) Have a system where you can rent a little stand in a large open-market area, where you pay so much per day to run it.  I think someone mentioned a thing with being able to hire an NPC to sell items for you when you\'re not there.  I think this sounds really cool  :)
3) Once you have a bit more money, then you can rent a small building where you can sell your stuff, probably in an area of town where there are a lot of other shops
4) After you have become very rich and famous, you could then build (or probably have some NPCs build it) your own place to sell your products.  You could even have a multi-level building where your shop is on the bottom and your living quarters are on top!  Smithing type characters could have an additional room maybe where they could contruct weapons, or alchemists have a bunch of tools they use to make potions.

Ok, that was a lot longer than I wanted, but I wanted to get across that I think this would REALLY enhance the role-playing aspect of Planeshift.

One last note: In some games, I have noticed that merchant NPCs seem to \"spawn\" random sets of weapons when you buy from them.  I disagree with this.  I think that NPCs can only sell weapons that they have either made themselves or purchased from another player/NPC, and the only way new weapons come into the game is when a smith creates one, or when a monster drops one.  For one, this would create a more dynamic economy, i.e. if there are lots of people that need weapons, but only a handful of smiths in the town, you will have to either pay a higher price, or venture to a different town to hopefully get a better deal on what you\'re looking for.  Also, this would help out all the merchant type players in Planeshift, as they would both be more needed by players/NPCs, and they could maybe increase profits by travelling (or perhaps hiring an NPC to travel) to other towns to sell your goods, if there is not very much demand locally.

Just some cool idea I think would be really fun!  :)  :)  :)

Uhm, no offence, but i get confused when people respond on such old posts.  ?(
<Worf> These are the moments when my ego gets put back on the ground. I use linux for quite some time, and am soon 2 years maintainer of a linux distribution. I started to think I would be good at it. But then I tried to get planeshift running.

Sorry about that, I figured it would be better to respond to an older post than post another one and have someone say \"Isn\'t there already a post about this?\"

In another game I play, you can rent merchant stalls for one game day and sell wahtever you want. in the other game, theives coudnt take anything or such like that, but this should be changed to make it more interesting :P
