Landscape!
« on: December 07, 2003, 07:27:00 pm »
I have recently checked out an rpg similar to planeshift and still in beta named dark and light. The main focus there is the massive landscaping. you really have to see it to believe. i hope planeshift would get great landscaping like dark and lights. its too late and those cruddy excuses for hills are plain dissapointing. im hoping after crystal blue which has been discribed as a fighting expansion, that the devs will pinpoint on landscape. im almost thinking of moving to dark and light just for the landscape... it hypnotizes me almost :P

Crystal Space Website
CS recently got a new landscape engine (but for the new renderer only!) which looks really nice. Check out the screenshot at:this link . The landscape engine supports realtime merging of different textures (see how the road and grass textures are combined), realtime lighting and bumpmapping and a lot more.

they will use this in one of the next versions, so the landscape will get much better.

The CS pic is just fine. What, you\'d rather see better landscape and less combat/magic/spells/more lag/crappier interface...? I guess not. :P

Its looks much nicer than before, they have to be credited for that. Besides Dark and Light restricts you two choosing two kingdoms. It\'s to constricting, I\'d take the freedom of PS anyday. Thanks

what??? light and dark does nothing of the sort. it doesnt have much stats and minimal fighting so far but im saying the graphics are beautiful and i think that if they were incorporated into this game, the beauty would increase 10 fold. and i would play light and dark but you have to sign up for beta and i havent gotten a response yet... ;(

There are many ways to express your wishes, and the one you choosed seemed somehow offensive, some kind of \"this thing sucks, I want a better one\". Plus you\'re asking for something that will obviously be enhanced sooner or later, it could fit in the category \"the game would be better with less lag\" (though opposite because smoother landscape = slower game).

I\'m an idiot, but at least I\'m aware about it.

The landscaping engines I\'ve played with usually allow you to add multiple layerrs to the texture, then paint each layer to the ground. This way it\'s easy to make paths, grassy knolls, swampy areas, etc. Some engines also allow you to \"paint\" a sprite (such as grass, flowers, shrubs, puddles of water, etc) onto the ground (trees are no good as sprites as you can walk through most sprites). I\'m hoping the landscaping engine handles all these features.

Dark and Light: Amazing landscapes
New PS landscape engine: Good enough

Better graphics usually means lower FPS, and my system can\'t get much lower before a game becomes unplayable.

Ummm I don\'t get it.  That Dark and Light stuff looks nice coz\' rolling smooth environments are easy to make look good.  It\'s a very appealing look, but not realistic at all.  Those environments are just more developed than the short little sample screen shot of the CrystalSpace terrain.  I don\'t know what it\'s LOD capablities are, but I don\'t see why PS couldn\'t do most of that.  However, I don\'t imagine vast open spaces will be a huge focus of PS\'s world anyway.

whemyfield, Yes, Dark & light (Black & White?) looks spectacular, but dont forget that PS is a free project and not even in beta yet. The PS team does this for free, while the D&L team is a pay-to-play company.

You cant really complain about this game, beacuse its a free project. Developing a good game costs money and takes time. Those folks develops this on their spare-time, because they want to. If you\'re gonna critizise this game, then the critizism can at least be constructive.

Stop whining about the graphics and show some respect for the PS-team instead. :baby:

I read the FAQ and I quote.

Will there be several servers in parallel hosting the same world?

\"No. This is not compatible with our point of view on online gaming, our network design able us to gather people in a same world. When a friend of yours will play DnL you?ll always have the chance to meet him in the game! If he shares the same alignment. ;)\"

That wink at the end is actually there so I don\'t know if they used that as a comedic or sarcastic way. But if its true then the game will surely be no fun, whether or not its got good graphics.
