Evolution of SpeedySep
« Reply #121 on: October 06, 2004, 08:46:53 pm »
New mini project, loosely titled \'Speedysep\'. This will, if finished, hopefully become a t-shirt print for Seppie himself to wear. :)

At first, like most of my pictures, it started as a random scribble. I had this picture in my head of Seperot sprinting his way through the center of a massive battle, sword dragging along the ground behind him sending sparks everywhere, as pterosaur riders closed in from above to attack.

So as you can see, it was pretty crappy. But I showed Sep, and he liked the idea, and mentioned it\'d be a good tshirt design, so I carried on... O.o

...

etc...

Anyways, still unfinished. Ya I know the legs look weird. Ya, the sword is about to be scrubbed and re-drawn. Ya, it\'s gonna have more detail. :P Oh, and ya, I decided to get rid of the pterosaurs and the battle/flames, it\'s alot simpler this way. :P

Imho it looked better with the flames behind and the smoke in front, but that\'s just me.  Regardless, it looks great!

*wonders if he can get some concept art out of moogie :D

Whoa! Fantastic!

Question: What program(s) did you use?

The difference between your first and second pic is amazing. At first I was thinking, this one is going to suck ( ) But then...
Thats just so cool Moogie.

And I gotta see a pic of Sep wearing the final product! :D

Great pic!
Its how I imagined a cartoon sep cat version. :)
The only thing that seemed off was that the legs are too long for a cat like creature. Just my opinion though. And it still looks gret.
Lol Internet

Thanks all. :) As always, I\'m using Photoshop. This time it\'s Photoshop CS actually, but I\'m not using anything that isn\'t already in older versions of the program.

I\'ve fiddled with the legs a bit and put the sword back in at a lower angle so it\'s actually touching the ground infront of his feet. Shiny bits and sparks will come later. ;)

You can see the fiddled version here.

Oh, and btw, I do plan to put the fire and smoke back. :)

I liked the composition in the first two stages, I consider that by removing the fire and pterosaur the plane looks a bit empty. So I would recommend thinking about some distinct detail added to counter the weight of Seperot\'s presence at the bottom half.

Considering that this is just a digital sketch so far, it is not necessary to go into much details. But I think the front leg is a tad too long. Considering the laws of proportion and anatomy, I would say that Seperot\'s front foot, in that particular position, would not be touching the ground. And the tail is a segment too long in my opinion, but that is more of a subjective preference.

The position of the protagonist is neat and fluid. The sensation of movement is clear, and characteristic of anime scenes (Which is good! Anime and manga can be beautifully dynamic). The lines of the hair and tail are correctly resolved, as is the weapon\'s inclination.

The fact that the friction between the blade and the grass somehow manages to produce sparks has a bit of a weird-looking effect, in my opinion. Though many admirable artistic compositions have as a quirk the transgression of physical laws.

I\'ll look forward to the final version. ^_^

That looks like PhotoShop work to me. Was that what you used?

And of course, all criticism I offer is aimed to be productive, not destructive. Not that I consider myself an eminence on the subject, but being graphic design my main object of study, I am prone to this sort of analytical observation of people\'s artwork.

Keep the fanart coming!

EDIT: Yes, you used Photoshop. Silly me that I didn\'t read the last post.

Can you remeber FF8 beginning movie with the battle sequence with Seifer and Squall, that stance with the blade running against the ground. Simular and the character is Sephiroth from FF7. I like how everything comes from the Final Fantasy Series :) Still really nice

Thanks for the c&c, Golbez. :) Did you see the link in the post you missed when you first replied? I altered the legs and feet slightly there, so they should look a tad better now.

The grass is just placeholder right now, by the way. It just happened to be a green colour selected when I slapped down the floor. :) Also, the sword correctly touches the ground infront of Seperot in the latest version. His torso is turned and his arms are pulled taught infront of him, which means the sword is not so much being carried, but being dragged, as a heavy object (That\'s the effect I wanted anyway; does it look so?).

Yep, definitely a big improvement between the last two \"versions\", although the difference lies in detail.
- dark red on the clothes looks better imho
- the additional lighting does give it a more plastic, three dimensional look. Same on the shirt/armour thing.

Suggestions:
- try to do something similar with the blade like what you did with the hair. It still looks a little too plain/flat/bright/white, especially compared to the rest.
