Montly fee eventually?
« on: April 06, 2002, 11:36:17 pm »
I\'m pretty new here and I\'m a bit confused about people saying that this is free. I would understand the demos and open betas being free, but some people make it sound like there is no fee, ever. I probably just misunderstood, so all i\'m looking for is clarification.

Thx for your help

The idea is for it to be free, but most likely if they cannot work out a good way to generate money then we\'re skrewed. I think there gonna host the game on there servers but here\'s a list of other ideas people have been throwing around:

1. pay for extra items (just for show no extra advantages)
2. a mandatory banner clicking campaign
3. Fylers and ads players can buy in game.
4.Donations
5.Server contributions (people offer servers for the game)
6.Free servers (really crappy)
7.Maybe a supped up cd version that people can mail away for? (my idea)

there are alot more ideas but here are some of the latest of read about.

Then who is programming this game? And who\'s doing the art and stuff? I find it hard to believe that they are doing this for free. I don\'t know about this, it seems unreasonable to have a free mmo. MMO\'s have an inital payment and a montly fee, and they are worth it. To have it totally free to the gamers must be a pretty damn hard task. Oh well, good luck with it!  :)

Yes, they are doing it absolutly FREE and they also said they are pretty sure they will have no banners  :D

we got cool developers so they want no profit off of this ;) except if they wanna apply for a job doing things like this, it owuld look pretty good if they made a mmorpg  :D

all people designing the game are volunteers, infact, i personally want to get on the team.  the servers they have are not crappy cmhitman, i mean not everything that is free is bad, planeshift for example:)

yeah.. setting up a server doesnt require a very good system most of the times... i\'ve set up lots of servers.. (kingpin, uo, opflash etc.) and most of the times it worked absolutely fine.... i could even play the game on the same computer without having lag.. (and there were also other players) so erhm.. i think if they just put 1 good computer somewhere there server will work good... (depending on how they created the server software)..
hmm... I hope you guys understand what i mean.. i just woke up so i write a bit unclear :))

I\'ve ran a website server from my computer and it was a nightmare. Before that I would never lag, my cable connected to yahoo.com was at 22 ping, which was very fast. Then with the server up, once only a few people started downloading some pictures, I got pings in the range of 5,000! After about a week I decided to stop running it from my computer. So the moral of the story, Planeshift will have to have an expansive server run the game. Maybe one of them is rich and can pay for it... I don\'t know... but it won\'t be free. Hopefully someone will donate the server  ;) .

I have to agree, most people really don\'t mind banners. They are also usually unnoticable in many cases. If we just have a banner when we were loging on to play, and if most of us were commmited to clicking it every time we sign on, it could help a lot! And for those who don\'t like banners, even they probably wouldn\'t mind seeing one for a few seconds while loging on. I don\'t see any draw backs, the money could really help pay for a nice server. Maybe Planeshift could cut a deal with a server hosting company, it could really help. So what do the devs think about this...?

I think charge for a CD version/Donations is a good first logical step. Lets just hope thats enough to support Planeshift.

Banners are not a good idea. You make chump change from them and all they will do is increse system/bandwidth requirements, and are very difficult to add onto the Crystal Space engine.

In reply to some of your ideas hitman:

1. pay for extra items (just for show no extra advantages)

I\'m almost absolutely positive that this won\'t happen, every player gets exactly the same opportunities. So a special weapon is going to cost you lots of tria\'s :)

3. Fylers and ads players can buy in game.

What idiot would buy banners? :)

7.Maybe a supped up cd version that people can mail away for? (my idea)

Maybe a good idea, but i thinks smart people would dld the game and sell them theirselves for lower prices. :(

U actually prefer to pay for a game? Plus that working for PS is fun! I get to make up stories and legends. Plus that it improves my english (I\'m Dutch). I love it! And devs in other divisions think exactly the same way about it!

<Worf> These are the moments when my ego gets put back on the ground. I use linux for quite some time, and am soon 2 years maintainer of a linux distribution. I started to think I would be good at it. But then I tried to get planeshift running.

If they would be selling the CD, that would be copyright infrigment and they could goto jail for 2 years.

hmm.. how do you want to prevent it?
the whole world is selling cd\'s to each other, and only 1 of the 10000000000 illegal cd sellers is caught..
so i think people will copy it and sell them yes..

OK I think I have the solution.  ?PlaneShift brought to you by Dell? [Fill in any large Tech Company].  The idea would be to have Dell (or other) provide the server(s) on their existing connection to the net and they get the sponsorship rights.  What Tech company would not jump at the chance to get the goodwill of 100,000 geeks with very little cost to themselves?  I am an IT manager and when purchasing items that are technically the same I go with the company I know and like.  So when I go to purchase my next 20 PC?s I chose Dell over HP (or others) because Dell was nice enough to provide me with free entertainment.  Thoughts?
