Profanity in PS - a.k.a Zleeb and likewise
« on: February 16, 2004, 07:25:57 am »
First off I would like to complain about a character named Zleeb.... spouting off very vile and obscene rhymes last night at about 12:00 CST.  Now I\'m not bothered by a little profanity, but this was excessive and really nasty stuff.  What\'s to be done?

Anyway, the real question is, is there or are there plans for any code of conduct for players?  Is this tolerable?  If there are no rules in place or in planning, why?  And if there are, who are we supposed to inform if this kind of thing persists?

Hiya,

Thanks for raising this issue. PlaneShift has seen more than its fair share of rude, moronic visitors during its lifetime. Usually they won\'t hang around for more than a day or two before finally realising that they\'re wasting their time. However, things like this are still highly annoying, and can make other players leave the game.

In future, if there is an abusive player causing trouble online, please visit the public developer IRC channel immediately and ask for an admin to check out the situation. They will join the server and witness it happening for themselves, and kick the player if necessary.

Currently, as MB is only a tech demo release, there are no measures to prevent things like this happening, nor indeed to do much about it if it does. However, there will be some basic features in CB which can help.

1. The /ignore player command. If a player is annoying you, you can simply ignore him.

2. GM presence. GMs will moderate the game world and can be alerted by players if there is trouble. GMs will take the appropriate action against the offending player (silence, kick, ban, etc).

I don\'t know of any plans to implement chat-censors, but this may also be worth considering if the situation were to ever start escalating. As it is, I don\'t really think this is needed right now. Most PS players are mature and take care to not offend people with abusive language.

Thank you for the information Mogura.  It\'s much appreciated :) I agree that chat-censors are not necessary at the moment but it\'s good to know that the devs and moderators of PS may be open to such measures if the need ever arises.

Out of curiosity, who are the GMs at the moment? Any besides the devs? And what are the planned duties/numbers of GMs that can be expected to be in-game once it\'s really up and going, say after CB gets off the ground?

Thank you again

someone should come up with swear/curse words unique to PS so that people who want to RP a rude/offensive character can do so without actually being rude/offensive

just a thought :)

hehe.. you son of an endukai :P

If chat-censors were to be put in place, it would be nice to have them put in client-side as opposed to a global one on the server.  Takes some of the load off the server and also would hopefully allow the user to decide whether or not he/she wants to have the chat-censor on or not.

I dont mind people cursing to expres unhappynes, or overwelming joy... (f**k, a rabit killed my warrior) or ( f**k yeah,  the dragona droped a magic axe). The ocational dirty joke i dont mind eather.
For me those things are ok. What i hate though is people just saying one curse over and over again to get attention... As long as that doesnt happen i dont care...

well the best thing you can do right now is to ignore them as long as you don\'t feed the animal\'s they will aventually get bored and go away another good thing to do is talk in private with everyone else and the chat board become\'s very quiet and they get bored of that real fast  once they relize no one is listening to them they try to target a single person to get a response but again if you can bite your tongue and ignore them they go away (i know at time\'s it\'s hard to do but it work\'s )

Currently the only people with power above normal users are the developers. These include Vengeance, acraig, Talad and Boonet.

At the start of CB there will be no GMs, however this number will rise. Information regarding this will be released when CB is, but I can\'t say anything about it right now. :)

As for duties, that will depend on your GM \'level\'. Each level allows you control over a more important GM feature. For example, a top-level GM will be able to kick and ban players, spawn items, etc. A first-level GM may only be able to mute someone. (<-- Examples)

On a slightly differant topic, we need some RP profanities to get that same effect as using a real profanity but without being offensive.

Its great to see that the GM system is up and running for CB, that should eliminate quite a bit of that riff-raff.  Not to mention /ignore.

On a side-note, if chat censors aren\'t implemented in CB, it would be a fairly trivial bit of code.  You would just have to tokenize every chat string and compare each token to a predefined blacklist of words.  If the word appears on the list, just replace that token with \"puppy\" or some other mild word.  I could probably code up a cheap patch if there\'s any demand.
