Death penalties and team play
« on: February 20, 2004, 04:16:47 pm »
i have played my share of mmorpgs and one thing that always was on my mind was what happens if i die.

in games like awful Tibia, when you die you lose:
1. items
2. exp
3 skills
that sucks

but in games like eternal lands you only lost items (based on chance) and were sent to \"hell\" where you had to find your way out.  this is much better.

losing exp/skills sux because it takes awhile to get them, items are more easily acquired.  i think PS should have a \"hell\" that changes at each server save so you cant just easily find a way out and that you should lose items based on chance and PLEASE no exp/skill loss

also for encouraging team play, there should be some reward for it.  if you are injured, lost, stuck, etc you should be able to \"cry out for help\"  this allows for any players in the vicinity to assist you and after you have been \"helped\" that player gets exp/skills or what ever.
excuse me, my sword is stuck in your ribcage

rapidly changing hell map would be a lil demanding on the server (or client if the maps are client side... which they shouldnt be for exploit purposes)

i like the sphere-uo system of.. when u die u become a ghost and have to be resurrected... whilst a ghost u have a corpse lying in the spot you died.. this can be looted... so u gotta get res\'d quick + get back to yer body.. or get some friends to guard it for ya

A changing hell map is a good idea.

It wouldn\'t have to change everytime someone died. That would be FAR to chaotic - Every 10 to 15 minutes \"Hell\" changes from Map Cy324 to Map Ua518 :P

And, afaik, PS will have a \"hell\" that you\'ll have to escape from (I dont think you lose exp, skills, or items; just time)
Precious and beutiful, it is happy. The only time when it is not is when it is in a shape of a tear.

you know what would completely change the formula? Making you become stronger once you go to hell. Think about it! you just went to hell. Thats like going to prison x100. Now this shouldnt be too general as people will exploit it and die, but it should be so hard to get through hell that when you come out, your just so much stronger.

Hell hell hell.  Hmmm let\'s see now, hell if a place you go to when you do something bad or you were a bad person, now that is awfuly one sided :D.

When a player dies he should be brought to purgatory, or if you are non christian(spot between heaven and hell)  ah dammit that\'s still christian,  ANYWAY..

you are brought there and that\'s where your deeds are weighted and you are sent either to heaven or hell.

dont think game concepts should be linked to any religeon (seems like an argument waiting to happen to me)

instead we need a RP name for this \'afterlife\' in terms of the whole talad/laanx ingame religeon

Don\'t you ppl ever read the FAQs?

\"I died and lost all my stuff, can I have it back?

After dying your char will travel in the Death Realm, and if you can get out of there you will have your items and money back.\"

How about when you lose, there is a certain chance that you lose an item, and that is is done for each item you have with you. that way you could lose everything, 1 item or maybe even nothing. I think the same about that, much better, and it makes you be more carefull so you just dont jump into that dragon mouth to see if he has a need for a dentist.
And wouldn\'t it be better to let the dead be? that when you die, you character won\'t be available for 12 or 24 hours, and then it will be \"resurected\" by the game and put into the starting town again. Like a sort of penalty so there isn\'t a chance to get a quik revenge against who or what killed you.

the time is just an example, dont get so frustrated!
and about quests, i haven\'t seen or read anything about quests yet on the main page of PS.

12 to 24 hours?! are you crazy? (rhetorical)

if you had to wait that long after you died, it would become incredible frustrating, especially for player killers. Or say if you are completing a quest thats taken you ages to get so far in, and then some big deadly creature jumps out of nowhere and kills you, you\'d have to wait 12-24 hours until you could go back which would be really annoying coz u might forget where to go or what to do by then.

There is another thing i experienced in a game called runes***e. There if you died,  your items fell on the ground for everyone to grap, you were only allowed to keep the 3 best items (the ones with most value).
Since you died you were brought back to the starting point, making you run like hell back to the place you died hoping to find some stuff.
This would make players more carefull, yet it wouldn\'t cost you that \"rare\" if you died so that your well earned \"rare\" would stay your own.

and if you don\'t get out? Or you give up on getting out? Will you have the choice on returning automatically losing your items and cash and just regaining your skill levels or what? If you lose everything and not just a percent (Keep your 3 most valuable items in inventory and lose 1/2 of your money plus 1/4 of your XP) of it we will definately be in need for a bank because I can see guild wars will start soon and end quickly and then start over :)

Oops! Yah that thing the post on top of this just said about RS is what I posted as keeping ur 3 most valuable and what not :)

Well I really don\'t like the idea of sending people to another whole level after dieing and when they accomplish that they can return back to whatever world...but it does make sense. For example your having a guild war over whatever and you lose a guy if there wasnt this place to go to he could just continue returning and fighting after each death making the battle last what? forever!

you have a point there, but if you lose items everytime you die, you will stop fighting after a while. And else there could also be set some extra\'s in it, like when you are the one that start the fight with another player, you will lose the \"special\" of keeping 3 items when you die for like 3-5 minutes. If you do get killed in that time you will lose everything.
just an idea
