New Guilds Forum Rules - Post Yours
« on: February 26, 2004, 07:34:32 pm »
Hiya all,

Well, we havn\'t been ignoring the many people who have recently begun complaining about the state of the Guilds forum. Although the rules are known and understood to us, it seems everyone else is confused as to what is classified as spam here, and what isn\'t. Alot of the examples that have been shown to us seem fine, but we can\'t ignore the fact that you guys think they\'re having a detremental affect on the area.

Here is what we ask of you: Propose a set of new rules for the Guilds forum.

The rules must be fair and reasonable. They must allow for some conflict/arguing between guilds and members (as this is a good part of having a guild, not a bad one). However, these rules are more like a \"Code of Conduct\", so rules must also address things such as spam (and your classification of spam in this respect), insults, swearing, and any other poor/offensive behavour. Cover as much as possible and explain your rules well, so there is no confusion.

We will decide the best rules to use out of your suggestions, and all moderators and admins will enforce them. Rules that regularly appear, and are sensible, will likely be enforced also (as this is being done to find out what you think will be good rules, not us).

Please only post if you are proposing rule(s)- OT and discussion about rules will be deleted. If you wish to make a discussion regarding the rules, please make a thread in the Guilds forum and talk there. Thank you for listening, and we\'re looking forward to your suggestions. :)

- No more two sided discussions, these things belong to Instant Messengers, not on forums(this is more a rule for all the forums, not just this one).

- No obvious spam, just look at the Calen Vakhar thread, there are multiple pages that are just spam in that thread..

Here are the General Discussion rules(slightly modified):

- Posts which are totally offtopic can and will be deleted.

- If you would like to talk about other games, or music, or the weather, or whatever you are free to do so in other boards created for those purposes. This forum is about guilds and the discussion here is about guilds.

- Guild Forums means discussion about Guilds. Not discussion about life and social happy hour.

Well, these \'new rules\' suggestions rather bite if you ask me. Sure, a guild forum is a great way to advertise your guild and such, but is that all PS is about? Collecting crystals and blatant advertising? I feel much of the so called spam on this board is really gamers having a good time and enjoying every aspect of the community. It is a shame that you people are trying to restrict it. Sure, I agree as much as the next person that spam does and will happen... but these proposed rules are harsh.

Here is what I propose:

- Forum members found to be adding only non-constructive comments (notice I didn\'t use the term spam) can be reported to Moogie or one of the devs. If enough reports on this member are filed, that member recieves a PM asking to stop. 3 PMs then your out.

By constructive, I mean it adds to either the RP or Guild discussion... even if the current topic is music or movies.

*deliberate flaming or derogatory comments of another guild in a none rp sense (including cabal, even if its true) should be deleted immediately too imho.

I know I\'m fairly new, and I\'m not that savvy ( funny word ) with guilds, but I have seen the demise of other forums due to spamming/too much OT, so here are my insights:

- Guild thread starter responsible for their thread! If someone spams it, get\'s too off-topic for your liking etc, then
1. - Politely ask the person to edit/delete their post
2. - If that fails inform a mod.
( Helps the mods and means you take an active role in the presentation of your guild thread )

- One thread per guild? If threads were kept truley on-topic then surely one should be enough in all but the most popular cases. I don\'t really see the need for \"X guild; thread Y: recruiting!!1!\".

- To get around the status of the guild not being obvious ( and thus resulting in new threads ) the thread starter could edit the first post and put ( in a prominent place ) the current status: e.g.
Status: recruiting, or Status: abandoned
( Ideally you could do it in the thread title, like \"[recruiting] - myGuild thread\" - but you can\'t edit post titles in this forum :( )

- make sure the rules are known in a sticky! Obvious, sorry, but there\'s no excuse for not seeing a big hihglighted sticky saying \"RULES\" ( although I\'m amazed that many people don\'t... )

Bah, I had a few more ideas from other forums that tried to get back on track, but I can\'t remember them now! :( I I think it\'s just a case of people who are fed up of this to really try to stay calm and not to get into spam arguments, and like I said, keep an active role in preserving their thread to information that is relavent to their guild. I know it\'s frustrating seeing the same question for the 100th time, and people \"spaming\" too much, but if all the \"regulars\" refrain from biting then it can get better. Remember: it takes a community to run a community ( meh, that doesn\'t make sense, but I hope you know what I mean - \"regulars stick together\" ).

In the other thread (the useless one created by Aendar), SnoWolf posted:

Quote
-Post only if you can add to the conversation
-Treat fellow forum goers with respect
-Do NOT respond to posts that break the first two rules

Pretty simple I think

edit: Silly me, I posted this in the wrong thread, could a mod please move it?

Just to say i agree and support these rules.

Rule: If you do not like what is being posted in a guild\'s forum thread, stop reading it and move on. Non-guild members do not have the right to regulate what is posted in a guild\'s forum as long as it doesn\'t violate decent standards for the entire board; two-sided discussions, spam - whatever the clan permits shall be the one and only rule.
-----

The moderator\'s intentions for this rules thread are wholesome and good. But, a lot of nonsense has already been posted in here. Therefore, it\'s not going to work. How could anyone think he or she has the right to determine content of another guild\'s forum, haha. It\'s laughable that some do, but kind of scary. Go censor your own guild forum and stop whining about mine. If you don\'t like what I write stop reading it.

If you are a serious guild then you should have your own forums set up.  These forums should be for those that want to advertise or make annoucements ( ie Guild War announced, New famous member added etc ). Or for guilds looking for help in setting a site up.  Other stuff should be on their own guild sites forums.

It is a bit cumbersum, however, if you have to go to every single guild forum to talk to them.

Isn\'t this exactly why most of the guild forums have Guest rooms or other forums made for people outside the guild..?

Well, I lurk on a fair number of the \'big guild\' sites/forums.  Just to keep an eye on what people are saying and what sort of things they want to see in game.  As well to see which guilds are in in for the long haul.  Some guilds have really nice sites.  ( Thinking of Bloodclaw Inc and OI at the moment ).  So you can tell those guilds are for real.

These forums should just be for guild annoucements and events.  Guild debates can be here if they are relevent to game design.

If you just want to say \"This guild is smelly\" then post it on their forums and leave us out of it. :)  If however you want to say \"This guild has offended us and we are preparing for war, we ask that other guilds stay our of way\" then that is cool.  I guess once guild wars/management stuff gets more in place then the forums will not be used as much expect as a place for bragging rights :)
