Kiern's Big Post o' Questions
« on: April 20, 2002, 07:15:32 pm »
Hey I finally got around to reading the faq and all that, good work!

Anyways, at school my mind kinda wondered off (imagine that) and I have some questions to ask....

1.  In the FAQ it says guards and gods will keep everything under control.....will these be npcs/humans or both?

2.  Will a person get many warnings before they are banned?

3.  Some quests will be cooperative....how will that work? like, how will the exp or items be split up? will more go to the people who were the most useful or will it be split evenly?

4.  Guilds will own their own guildhouse, can other things that are like guilds but they are not exactly one be able to own their own house to run business from?

5.  Once players reach a certain level will they be \"recognized\" for their hard work, or other deeds they have done

6.  If the guards are human-controlled will regular players be able to become a guard through getting voted guard from other players?

7.  Can the government in each city be different? And will there be any definate government anywhere?

8.  As time goes on will the landscape Yliakum change and new cities appear/ be formed?

9.  Will each city be different such as races/alignment/shops/items found there

I realize these are a lot of questions and that most of them cant be answered at this moment becaue its not positive yet, but i had to get them outta my head oh well

mmm....Perhaps there could be the option to become a guard (if your are in a guild, I believe that the Guild Leader should agree with you joining the guard), but for this you must have a certain alignment, and qualities (good reputation, good attitude, good manners, etc). Hey, perhaps they should get a salary!

2.  Will a person get many warnings before they are banned?

I believe they will.  They warn you when you are acting out of line in the IRC channel, and since the GM will probably be the same, I think they will act like they always do in IRC.

I think that the whole party should get the same amount of everything.  I mean, everybody gets the same amount of exp. and money, and if someone receives, for example, a Holy Sword, then everyone should get a Holy Sword too.

4.  Guilds will own their own guildhouse, can other things that are like guilds but they are not exactly one be able to own their own house to run business from?

It has been discussed before. I hope that both Guildhouses and personal houses are included,  but implementing houses for everyone may be too hard (or take up too much room in the world)
5.  Once players reach a certain level will they be \"recognized\" for their hard work, or other deeds they have done
I hope so...we should think about how...perhaps a free house...or a position in the government (I dont think it is likely to happen)...

6.  If the guards are human-controlled will regular players be able to become a guard through getting voted guard from other players?

No, they should earn the job. Being popular (let\'s face it, being popular is what gives you the votes, not your abilities) doesn\'t mean that you will be a good guard.
Perhaps you join as a Rookie, and then if you do well they promote you to Soldier (or 2nd lieutenant, perhaps...) if you dont...you get kicked out (we should consider if people is allowed to try to join more than once)

7.  Can the government in each city be different? And will there be any definate government anywhere?

There will be an government for the whole Yliakum. Remember the Internal Circle (Octarchs) and the Outer Circle (Vigesimi).  It should be discussed if there will be local authorities. I think it\'s too much trouble for such a little issue (I think that with one government for the whole Yliakum is fine). But maybe there could be a small government for every floor of Yliakum.

8.  As time goes on will the landscape Yliakum change and new cities appear/ be formed?

If you think about it, the world changes so slowly that you hardly notice it. But perhaps cities get bigger (or smaller, if people move out from it) and people can build houses or farms in the outskirts of the cities.

Quote
9.  Will each city be different such as races/alignment/shops/items found there

I say \"YES!!!\". That way, travelling will be worth it. You visit different places , were the predominant race and alignement is another one, and if the local architecture is different it would be really great.

you know what might be a great idea? take this list of questions, submit them to Talad or someone from the PR team and doing so might get an IRC interview set up so that these questions could be asked dirrectly to the devs and maybe more so straight to the head man himself. good way to get answers pluss make use of the fan channel along with add more people to the talks. lots of the devs avoid these boards like a plauge so a planned IRC interview would work best.

Yeah, i talked to washi and got him to answer a list of questions for me. It may not be easy all the time but i think when they are not busy is the best time to bother them about answer questions.

what is the hardest ps dev problem the team has come across

I would say the hardest problem for all the devs is getting good people who are interested in a free project like ours, we have a lot of great people on the team, but we always need more

do you seriously think that ps will meet the expectations of the ps fans

Some things might be differently to how the fans would like, so it might not meet all fans expectations, but then our own expectations might be more than the fans, We have a lot of ideas that we want that the fans could only dream of.

if so how do u think you guys will accomplish this task

We all come from different gaming backgrounds. We hope to take the best of these different styles to create a game the is fun and hopefully a little different then any other game

We on the team are all just people who really love this kind of game.  All of us are very experienced with games like this and we want to make something that WE consider fun and something we can be proud of.

We are going to work to impress ourselves and make something we enjoy playing.  We hope the fans will also enjoy it. :)

what types of ideas has the team seriously thought about putting in the game

emphasizing group play and teamwork
visually beautiful yet exciting to be a part of
not requiring combat to have a fun and interesting experience
Each idea and feature will be evaluated as we get closer to building them to make sure that they promote these goals and others.

I could give you details but then they might not get implemented later

how far from the finished project do u think the tech demo will be

The difference between the tech demo and the full game will be very extensive,  the more good devs we have the faster we get work done, but there are many stages between AtomicBlue and the full game and even then we will be adding special features
The tech demo is very early, and there are still much more work to be done, no eta yet...
We plan to have a new release every month or two for the foreseeable future--at least a year or two.

in comparison to other mmorpg\'s do u think ps is unique?

Most so called mmorpgs don?t really have a Roleplaying Element, Planeshift will, infact from what I have seen it is the first game to truly take that into account, I believe it is Unique

The uniqueness of PS is going to be in the players... these kinds of games are what YOU make them, moreso than any other type of game ever developed.  The PS team is working to build a world in which you will have great ability to make the game what you want it to be.

do u think that ps will be able to affectively stay free

We are gong to do all we can to keep it free, we have a few ideas to possibly implement to keep it that way, we want it to keep it as free as long as it is possible. If not then we will assess the situation then.

if so what steps have u guys come up with to keep ps free

The PS team is committed to keeping this game either free or as cheap as possible.  No one will ever make a penny off of this game.  We have many ideas to cover our costs, but none are workable to investigate until we are further along.  We will keep you posted.

at ur site u say that u will be able to create stats and define a little bit of your players characteristics. What does that exactly entail

Well, you can see the different character creation screens to see how the races balance out. You can also adjust some of their basic attributes such as strength and intelligence.

We plan to have an extensive creation process where you can select a large number of character attributes.

if this is playable by users with 56k why is the file so large and what will you guys do to make sure the 56ers aren\'t left out

The file is large to contain the models, and sounds, music etc, so you don?t have to download them which would be worse on a 56k user if they had to download them every time they wanted to play, the file will get larger as we get further in the design process, More songs, more maps, models etc

As we add more advanced features to the game, users on slow connections will have the ability to change the level of detail or turn off certain features if they feel their connection is too slow to take advantage of those features.
That is true of graphics cards, processors, etc. also.

The following answers are provided just to try to help and do not represent actual final decisions by the PS team or the management.  Other team members can, and probably will, disagree with some or all of these.  Thanks.

1. In the FAQ it says guards and gods will keep everything under control.....will these be npcs/humans or both?

NPCs for the most part.  We cannot design the game to depend on human gamemasters being present and aware.  I would put good money on gamemasters also having extraordinary powers though.  :-)

Will a person get many warnings before they are banned?

I doubt it.

Quote
Some quests will be cooperative....how will that work? like, how will the exp or items be split up? will more go to the people who were the most useful or will it be split evenly?

I was there when we came up with this idea of \"fellowship quests\" and I believe the intent is that each person on the quest will benefit in some way, although it will probably not come out even and one person will benefit most from the quest.  This is intended to be analogous to how fantasy novels work, where a group gets together to help one guy do something, but all grow and learn (and get stuff) along the way.

Quote
Guilds will own their own guildhouse, can other things that are like guilds but they are not exactly one be able to own their own house to run business from?

Not sure but my vote would be just for guilds to have houses or whatever.

Quote
Once players reach a certain level will they be \"recognized\" for their hard work, or other deeds they have done?

Yes, certain quests and mob kills will result in titles being awarded to the player, which will be visible to all other players.  Also, armor and weapons at high levels will be visibly different.

Quote
If the guards are human-controlled will regular players be able to become a guard through getting voted guard from other players?

I have never heard discussion about human-controlled guards.

Quote
Can the government in each city be different? And will there be any definate government anywhere?

I have never heard much about the government system.

Quote
As time goes on will the landscape Yliakum change and new cities appear/ be formed?

The dev team will continue to work on the game long after it is released.  Changes they make will continue to be rolled in.

Quote

Yes.
