How will vegetation grow in PS?
« on: April 19, 2004, 09:58:24 pm »
See http://www.planeshift.it/setting_overview.html for more background setting info.

I was wondering since their is only one central light point in the cave that does not move all the plants and trees would grow in the direction of that one light point.

So that means we would proberly have big trees in the center of the cave, around the lake that would grow straigth up to the light and at the borders of the cave smaller diagonal trees like the ones in high mountains and deserts and smaller vegetation.

I really think that having one central light point should have some effects on how flowers, plants and trees grow. Offcourse if we make everything point wierdly in one point it might feel unreal. So I\'m not even sure how to handle this one, theirfor I drop it in the PS thinktank (;

Keep in mind that the source of light is very high up, also our plants grow fine with only one source of light.  It all depends on the scale of things.  but what you say has some fact to it, all plants follow the sun as it moves across the sky, even blades of grass move with the sun\'s angle.
The higher up the crystal is the less of the angle that the plants will lean towards the light source.
knowledge is power, but wisdom is a big stick with a bit of poo on the end.

i always thought that the crystals\' light (and magic) would nourish the plants ...i mean, there\'s going to be a lot of crystals around the place, aren\'t they ...and as far as i remember they should produce some light and should be full of magic in any case :]

1. I don\'t think the light reaches the cave, only Yilakum should get it. The crystal is above the top level in the stalactite, wich is inside the \'roof\' of the cave. So it won\'t shine on the cave, so trees and plants won\'t grow in it\'s direction :P

2. Since there\'s no light in the cave, you might say that there won\'t be any trees and stuff in the cave, but that\'s wrong too. Flora -can- grow in dark places, it just won\'t use photosynthesis but other things instead.

I\'m not sure exactly what photosynthesis does in plants, I think it\'s used to create big sugar molecules (or break them??). Anyways, it\'s not like the plants can\'t do without it, it\'s a matter of evolution.

Of course, that if Talad wants, the flora in the cave would be able to not only sustain without photosynthesis, but it\'ll also produce a nice and shiny light inside the cave so we won\'t accidently step into Cave-cow droppings :P

Edit: Hey, that\'s a nice idea... Cave-cows :D

I hate to do this but

Quote
I spent the day framing my brother?s garage under the baking sun. Got up in the morning with a sun low in the horizon and went home when it set. Around noon time it was overhead baking us. Driving home I realized the plain shift sun doesn?t move. It?s always in the same spot. This has got to affect the plant life. If there?s a shady wall nothing will grow on the other side but fungus. The light will never get to the other side because the sun won?t move around to hit it.

The lower branches of the tree will die because they don?t get sunlight. This is the tree?s way of conserving energy. It doesn?t make any sense to supports tree structure that isn?t gathering enough light to keep that part of the tree alive. The fact that the plain shift sun does not move in the sky would probably mean that trees only have branches and leaves on the side where the sun is unless it?s directly overhead.

So directly under the sun you would probably have trees that would be like an elm tree. There like a large umbrella. As you get further away and get a lower angle to the tree with respect to the sun you would probably see long spiky trees with leaves or needles only on one side. It might also mean farther yet in you might have a large number of vines that cling to hills where with their leaves pointed for the sun. The backside of the hill would be a rocky twilight without much in it.
