well... actually it is 1 idea that involves 3 skills.
I was just playing a game when i tought up with this idea. Most people will probably be playing the same strategic the whole game, when referring to combat.
Everyone will always be using: 1 wepon, 2 wepons (dualwield) distance wepon or wepon and shield. I tought these could turn into 4 nice skills.
Each would have several ranks: Grand mastery, high mastery, mastery, specialized and lowest proficient.
When you have skill points you could put skill points in these as well to bring them up a bit. Everyone should be able to get 1 of these up to grand mastery.
I was thinking of this to put combat wielding in a more roleplay environment: You can master each of these skills, and only 1 of these 4 can be brought up to grandmaster. No-one should have restrictions on these skills, since their own choice of preferred wielding style will bring forth 3 restrictions already.
(this is an example because i dont know how the stats will turn out in PS)
1 wepon fighting (meaning double handed and single use of 1 handed)
Proficient: xtra attack speed, 1% chance of blocking enemy attack.
Specialized: increase in min/max damage (1d6 truns 2d7), old bonusus from proficient remain as well.
Mastery: Increase in attack speed, an additional 1AC, blocking chance becomes 2%
High Mastery: Increase in max damage (2d7 turns 2d8), an additional 1AC extra, extra attack speed. Blocking chance increases to 3%
Grand Mastery: Increase min/max damage (2d8 turns 3d12), blocking chance becomes 5%, increase in attack speed, 1AC xtra.
Results:
When using 1 wepon and having grand mastery you would be rewarded:
5% chance of blocking enemy attack.
3AC extra on top of your own AC
an 2D6 extra damage with your wepon
Higher attack speed.
Of course this is just an example, but it would encourage some1 to choose a wielding form that he/she will use most. The 3 other wielding stands can still be brought up mastery, but High and Grand mastery is only available to 1 of the paths.
Any comments?
