Wow, I have a 100 Mbps DSL connection that only cost $25 a month American...$98.56 is crazy, I would rather go to the library anytime I wanted to use internet if I had to pay that much for 56k...

And yes, I wasn\'t thinking about those in different countries...sorry, It never entered my mind that high speed wouldn\'t even be available in some places...my naive americanity shows through... :]

well, my parents live about 12 miles outside of town. so their options are pretty limited. my little bro likes his MMOs though, and if you\'ve never tried the new ones on 56k, heres a hint, you don\'t want to.

He said 100 Mbps, which is about 12.5 MB/s, but that still seems way to fast for a DSL connection (although I don\'t know what the limits of DSL are.  Fastest DSL connection I\'ve seen is 4.5 Mbps or (bit over 500 KB/s)

First it depends on the variant of DSL you have: HDSL, SDSL, ADSL, VDSL.
HDSL can get up to 2MBit up and down, you need 3 copper cable pairs for that.
SDSL is always equally fast in both directions (hence symmetric DSL ;)), needs only one pair of cables. But at least in good ol\' Yurop you have to win the lottery to be able to afford it. Twice. Also 2MBit max.
ADSL ist the most common variant, downstream max 8MBit, upstream max. 1MBit. One pair of cables.
VDSL goes up to a whopping 52 MBit/s for downstream, upstream 2.3 MBit. Problem: the length between the computer and the main switch cannot exceet 300 metres (that\'s 328 yards for those who favour the strange length units :P)

Perhaps the ethernet adapter has 100 MBit/s ;)
Otherwise I know who will host a PS server in the future. :D

in UK, you can get 100mbps if u live in london, and it isn\'t DSL. Your connected to the core lines, so u get whatever bandwidth it availiable, which is usually huge. Costs around ?15,000 a year. ($25,000)

Very correct there...  In fact We work on split DSL lines, thus we share here....  It\'s about 2 times the speed of a 56K, thus topped out at 128 Kbps and it costs 3 times what I pay now for dialup - $9.95.  Cable is also available, but very unreliable due to our strong winds.  It goes down no less then 2 times a month and for hours on end.  Satalite costs anywhere from 80 to 120 a month and it uses a dial up connection for uploading.  Not worth it at all.  The biggest thing I look for whenever I get any game is the 56k availability of it.  I left EverQuest due to it\'s need for many 12+ hour updates and always needing to buy new cd\'s.  THose costing on average of 20 each.......  and the patches that came with the new cd\'s.  I will not pay any monthly fee for waisting my time and my phone bill.  Enough said. =)

Anyway, i am DLing the parts now to try it out.  I think I will be impressed and may show it to my friends.  Hopefully they\'ll want to join in.

But for those that...can\'t, they will be happy to know that their 56k will work ;)

Broadband is simply not available in some places.
If you live in any semi rural area you would have to pay for the cable to come out there and that can be upwards of 2000 dollars. It\'s not an option for everybody.

(I dont and I have a 500kbps connection on a cable modem we have a small busness connection so we are gurenteed at least 500 kbps but often get 600 kbps or even 700kbps it\'s very very nice)

ive got 512kbps but our provider (telewest just upgrade all their broadband connections to 50% faster for free so now i have 768kbps (90KBps download speed) :D

on topic it would probably cut their audience but since its free they will still have a large audience. also im guessing that must of the MMO fan base will have fast connections because of use of previous games (could/probably be wrong though :) ).

download speed depends on the mirror and your speed.
I can sometimes get speeds up to 300 mbps

Ps welcome to the planeshift message boards

Nobody in their right mind would run a server on a T-1 :)

You\'d run your server on a minimum 100Mbit/s switched port in a datacentre with quality peering to a local backbone provider. :D

All the gameservers I provide have 100Mbit/s ports availabe.

Btw, did you mean kbps or KB/s? - in terms of kbps; 1kbps/client would allow for around 1,500 slots on a T-1 symmetric line.

Yes, which means you are connected to DSL through your network card (your network card running at 100Mbps, almost guaranteed thats what that is showing).  Go run a speed test such as http://www.dslreports.com/stest to see where your connection lies.
