Is PS a monolithic nightmare? Or is it well organized and componentized? If it\'s the latter then wouldn\'t it be reasonable to release each piece when it\'s finished so we can test it, even if there\'s a separate release and server for testing?

Sitting on software for years with only a few people testing it seems like a pretty bad development strategy to me.

If you would like to test it:
cvs -d:pserver:anonymous@cvs.sourceforge.net:/cvsroot/planeshift login
?
cvs -z3 -d:pserver:anonymous@cvs.sourceforge.net:/cvsroot/planeshift co planeshift

Quality-wise people are more referring to the art and whatnot because, as evidenced by the above two commands, the code, etc. is available to test at your leisure

about your ideas of development strategies, closed source companies do that and make loads of money (well, sometimes). And you can decide on whether it meets the cut for your definition of well organized/componentized by looking through the code sfter you check it out. And if you understand it, join the development team (or apply, at least ;)) they could use the help. Of course, thats assuming that you _do_ know how to program ;)

Are those email adresses or what? Yeah I know...I\'m no programmer, and don\'t claim to be, but if that\'s an address to write to to inquire about testing CB then, I\'d be really stoked.

It\'s a CVS address.
If you don\'t know what a CVS is, then you shouldn\'t bother with thinking about testing. :)

The best testers are non-programmers.

Okay. So? Is this just an attempt to get into the private testing or something? Or are you a programmer? Or was that a chinese fortune cookie tidbit? :P

Not quite. What have you contributed back to planeshift after playing MB? What have other people? Compare that to the people downloading and trying to compile CB, and see who makes more of a difference...

Normal games release their beta as standalone packages that a monkey could install and try. They simply need brainless people clicking everywhere and reporting if something doesn\'t work.

PS isn\'t Alpha yet, and isn\'t like \"normal\" games, it isn\'t a game yet btw, it\'s OpenSource.
It means that everybody is able to download the source and compile the latest version of the CODE if they know how.
The art is still to be a suprise :)

Now when we have that excelent building guide by cava (Tested by Axsyrus), people that have MSVC (Or know how to use P2P :P) can test it and report bugs

Isn\'t that hoping for a bit too much? Maybe once a month, at most once a week. There\'s only so much new stuff they can design in a day (although granted that after CB there will be a couple of simple bug fixes which can be done in a day or two, but it would slow eventually).

That\'s true, 2-3 days is complete nonsense.

I\'ve been told that the next content patch for CB will be a few months after the release. Major bug fixes, will of course be issued when found. :)

It does seem like a lot now, but in the future, with an expanded team, it may be possible to release new content every week (I think that\'s long enough to hold my attention :P).

First you have to remember that all people (all of them) working on PS do this in their free time. So development tends to go slower then with commercial games where you have people that are payed to actually make the game and they do it fulltime.

Secondly before you can release something that can be betatested it has to be a in state that is actually good enough so that the most obvious problems are gone. Getting to that stage takes time.

Also about PS being monolithic or not. PS is actually made out of several modules and plugins but even so they all depend on each other in various ways. It is not easily possible to seperate one part and test it standalone.
