General Discussion / Re: Roleplaying Information from the Forums ICly
« on: August 02, 2007, 09:14:43 am »
I agree that it's not easy to answer. It depends on the situation, ie: whether my character knows the individuals involved, has a history with the guild/group, has completed a quest that would give her access to the information, etc. Some things can be overheard, say in a pub or other public area.. and sometimes the things overheard can be interpreted incorrectly, as in overhearing only a small part of a conversation.  I remember the game I played as a child where we had to whisper something to the person standing beside us, and they whispered it to the next person. The whisper would go all the way around the circle until it got back to the person who originated the whisper-- and it was invariably inaccurate by the time it made full circle.

Although some stories posted to the forums would obviously become part of the libraries permant colelction, I kind of assume that most stories don't.

General Discussion / Re: Running around with drawn weapons

In concept agree with what you said, Kaityra.  That said, though, I also have to agree with what Adiron said.

I have had Shang putting her weapons away upon entering cities of late for exactly the reason Kaityra states, but last night, one of Shang's swords disappeared while she was sheathing it. The sword didn't appear in her inventory, it didn't appear on the ground -- it just disappeared. I  immediately logged out then back in thinking that perhaps my client had crashed without warning again -- but nothing.

Considering how glitchy the game is, I think we can reasonably expect players to continue to move their belongings around as little as possible. Fortunately the weapon I lost this time was not a very valuable one, but that may not be true the next time it happens.

And don't forget we are supposed to get 'violent' by Video games, as from 'movies' and 'metal'.

Yes, I often get the uncontrollable urge to shift to feline form, grab my swords, and go out to hunt down and kill a tefusang to the strains of an Ozzy Ozborne tune.

In-Game Roleplay Events / Re: Duraza Disappears
« on: July 20, 2007, 12:04:01 pm »
Shangreloo doesn't visit the pub often, but on this particular day she happens to be in a corner looking over a text Kimlorm has asked her to deliver to a resident of Hydlaa. To say curiosity is a particular character flaw of hers would be an understatement, and true to her nature, Shang is reading through the document before delivering it.

Although she is quite immersed in the words written upon the parchment, a single spoken word catches her attention, "Duraza". She had thought him gone for good, and had quite, well almost, forgotten him. Her interest is peaked, and she lifts her head just enough to look over at the ones discussing Duraza. Recognising neither of them, she looks back to the parchment, but finds it difficult to fully concentrate on the document now.

A dagger is tucked neatly into a sheath at her thigh, and she reaches for it now, to run a fingertip along the mark she'd made upon the handle. The Diaboli had helped her find one of the three who had murdered her parents. He had also, on separate occasions, threatened to kill her and protected her from being harmed.

No longer able to concentrate, she begins to pack her belongings together, and rolls the parchment up neatly and re-tying the knot so that it appears that the parchment is delivered un-read by her.

”Which shall it be this time, Diaboli?" she mutters under her breath as  her whiskers twitch slightly. "This should prove most interesting."

General Discussion / Re: Age distribution of PS players

I answered the poll for myself. I want to point out though that there is another person in my household who plays under another account, and that person falls into the "under 13" category. We do have some yunguns playing PS, and they may not be looking at the forums.

General Discussion / Re: What motivates a GUY to roleplay a girl?
« on: May 11, 2007, 07:52:34 am »
I'm just curious as to what makes a guy want to roleplay a girl character? Forgive my ignorance but this is something that has been nagging at the back of my mind for a awhile now.  :P Me personally I wouldn't feel in the slightest bit interested in roleplaying a guy character, but then again I don't even have alts. Everything goes into developing Illysia.

I have been a text-based role player, a table top role player, and have tried various graphics-based RP games. Text-based is by far the best for people truly interested in the role playing aspect of a game. In my role playing experience I have played both male charries and female charries. Playing a male character was a challenge at first -- mannerisms, manner of speaking, the way a male carries himself and reacts to others is (obviously) quite different from a female. After a couple weak starts, I actually found myself enjoying playing an occassional male character because it allowed me to step fully outside myself and not carry my own quirks, preferences, etc into the game.

Favourite male charrie I ever played was a particularly twisted Malkavian (from VTM) named Berlioz who was incredibly fun to play.

Wish list / Re: char creation (hear me out)
« on: April 27, 2007, 07:29:51 am »
Personally, NameChanged, I think it's a good idea.

Not make well thought-out choices about a character you intend to play, Zanzibar?
Unless one is making a throw-away character, I can't imagine why one wouldn't take
the time to make well thought-out choices about their charrie.

However, with that said, we have to recognise the fact that character creation choices
in PS don't really mean anything. I find this a little odd considering the emphasis placed
on role playing, but..  *shrug*.

Guilds Forum / Re: Guild cheat sheets
« on: April 09, 2007, 08:10:32 am »
Our guild has many quest walkthroughs.  BUT we encourage members to actually try and solve the quests on their own or as a team before using the walkthroughs.  It is our opinion that the quests were developed as an enhancement to the fun of playing PS and not there just to be solved for advancement's sake.  We feel the walkthrough saves the more advanced players' time.  This way they don't have to hand hold a new player's when solving "Harnquist needs and apple" and the new player is not left scratching their head either.

Just my thoughts,

Araye

NOTE: we need a spell check   ;D

If posting qust walkthroughs on a guild website is considered acceptable, then it should also be accpetable in forums. After all, the guild is  accepted as following the rules of the game.. and yet posting walktrhoughs is considered "spoiling" the game. If posting walkthroughs for  guild members helps to enhance the fun of the game for newcomers and saves oldbies the hassle of helping newcomers.. Ok.. so I'm confused as to why it ok for some to post walkthroughs, but not for others to post them.

And yes, some guild walkthroughs (those for The Enlightened, for example) are available to non-guild-members, one just has to know the right person.  :innocent:

So, again, the question: Is posting a quest walkthrough a spoiler.. or isn't it.

As far as doing quests one at a time goes that would be the prudent course I suppose, but to me it is unrealistic because it means multiplying the number of time you have to make the trek from hydlaa or even ojaveda to the bronze doors greatly and that is simply too time consuming not to minimize.

Since people tend to emphasize "realism" in this game, I'd also add that it's not entirely realistic to expect a person (or character) to run only one errand at a time, especially when those errands require traveling great distances between two points. I know I ask other people I know, "Hey, I have to run out to Timbuktu.. do you need me to pick anything up for you while I'm out there?"

Complaint Department / Re: Talking to NPCs
« on: March 23, 2007, 06:31:35 pm »
I agree with Zan, i've done ALOT of quests very recently including the one you refer to in your post and have been able to complete all of them. Fair enough the NPC's only accept certain phrases and now and again you can spend an hour giving the right phrase but who said quests are suppose to be easy?

Quests should not be easy, but communicating withan NPC should not be the most difficult part of the quest. The frustrating part of a quest, and the part that requires thought, should be the puzzle.. not communicating with NPC's.

To refer to an exact phrase one needs to say to an NPC  as a "spoiler" is sort of silly if the player has already solved the puzzle and only needs to speak with an NPC to complete the quest. A spolier is something along the lines of: "Take the apple and feed it to the tefusang, then kill the teffie and gut it. After you gut it, loot the stomach, cut it open, and ..voila!.. applesauce." Telling a person the exact phrase to use with the cook to get the apple is not a spoiler -- the person has already figured out who to get the apple from. "Give me an apple." should work. "I need an apple." should work. "Do you have an apple?." should work. "Can I have an apple?" should work. And so should any other similar variations.

Also, not all quests seem to be working for all players. Because one person has completed a quest doesn't mean that everyone will be able to. I tried to do one quest a couple days ago, got to the last step in which all I had to do was return to an NPC with a message. The NPC didn't understand what I was saying. I asked a person I know who had completed it, and he told me exactly what to say to the NPC ..no luck. The other person even double checked his logs to make sure he was telling me the correct phrase, he was, but the quest would not work for me. To say "I know it works because I did it" doesn't take into account that not everything in the game always works the way it's supposed to work.  I think "alpha" is the phrase used.

Complaint Department / Re: The Winch -- What are they thinking?
« on: March 22, 2007, 06:43:30 am »
It's interesting to watch all these different threads that cover similar things from IC and OOC perspectives.

There have been a lot of complaints about not enough people being IC. As I understood it, access to the winch area was based on loyalty to the government. Those who truly RP characters that are not loyal to the government would not do the quest for access to the winch. I don't think it is out of line at all to have a limited access area that is based on an RP reason. In fact it makes more sense than having all areas wide open.

The concept of everyone having equal access to everything is definately an OOC concept.

If ony it were as simple as having IC loyalty to the government. It's difficult for some players to gain access to some quests required to access the winch for purely OOC reasons, ie: the quests don't always work as they're supposed to and some players get locked out for absolutely nothing they have done IC, or even OOC.

Some characters, as Drah mentioned, would run through the gauntlet of assignments (quests) for access to the area, and the unsuspecting citisens within.. even if their character's intentions were less than noble. And, ICly, this is as it should be.

But don't forget ... the "future" we're talking about is most probably a future after a big wipe ... when anybody is a "new player" and has all the chances to do and to access what he/she wants to ...

Yes, but theoretically (and hopefully) there will always be an influx of newer players.

Can you please explain what "difficulty" restricted areas present to you IC, aside from technical problems that will be taken care of with future expansions?

Access to limited areas is not a problem to me personally, and yes, I've been locked out due to discarded quests. However, should the current trend continue, I can envision a Yliakum future in which more experienced players will be locked away in restricted areas, leaving future new players out. Is this a future we really want to see in Yliakum?

Most people in Planeshift seem to be polite about remindnig others to stay IC, and to use brackets for OOC; and most people in Planeshift are polite about doing so once they are reminded -- guild or non-guild. I don't think anyone was recommending that guild leaders start babysitting members, or that large scale 'tattling" is in order. Little snippets of OOC are not a problem in game, nor should they be. It's long OOC conversations that are a problem in game, and new players are not always the culprits. Quality guild leaders can help take some of the workload off the shoulders of GM's by monitoring their own members. Guilds should always be "newb" friendly, and all guild members should help their newer players learn how to play PS regards communication tabs and what they're used for, OOC/IC, commands, etc.

The money amount currently required to create a guild is appropriate. I agree with Drah that players should be required to have a minimum amount of time in game before being permitted to create a guild. However, I disagree that all players wishing to join a guild should have a minimum amount of time in game since guilds are one of the best ways for new players to learn how to play PS.

The idea of having a /rpguide is a great idea! A guide that includes brief summaries of the rules, commands, the use of chat tabs, etc would be invauable in game.

I've been to Julain Beever's site before.. incredible stuff!

The city in which I live held its first ever street art festival this past summer, and it was great fun to be a part of.

Here is a site with some works I really enjoy. The artist is Peter Callesen, and well.. you have to see his work, it's really cool.

And how about H. R. Giger.
