Wish list / Things to influence the world around you
« on: September 21, 2006, 10:29:34 am »
I like PS, but there is still missing someone even concidering it is an alpha.

I would like to see a ways to influence the world. Little and big things.

Little things I would love to see would be things like monsters that aren't looted often get more loot. It shouldn't be to hard to make it so a NPC has a killcount and then have it the when it remain on 0 for a certain amount of time what he loots on avarage is raised. This would make that looking for far away monsters would have a benefit, but would also mean camping something for more then lets say a day wouldn't be a good idea, becuase finding a new one would probably be better.

Obviously things like rouges should be a bit more standarized and the maps a bit more filled for it to be fair, but think this could definately work.

Having roads appear where player often walk and have dirtroads that aren't walked upon slowly turn to grassland again. Probably a lot harder as I don't believe PS is atm really build like that, but this would make that the roads in the wild actually start to run as the people would be walking and think that would really give people the feeling what they do effects the world. Specially when updates will change behaviorpaterns it would be fun to watch.

Something bigger to be part of.
As one person it will obviously be hard to change things, sometimes it is also fun to be part of a group of people and do something that you can be proud of for a while. Explorers for example did this by going to places noone thought was possible and taking screenshots. Seen several do this by dropping items n the word of letters. People love to do things like this and it would be fun in my opinion to incroporate more of this in the game by giving the player choices in joining some factions and given challenges to accomplish this. For example you could have a free land and have the ranger faction and a farmers faction.

Obviously if the rangers faction wins you get more forest and more lootable monsters, if the peasantfaction wins next update it will be made farmland instead of forest and the foodprizes drop. Well strange exaple perhaps but you get the idea I hope ;)

Ofcourse in the end I would like to see you being able to build your own houses. Starting obviously with things like guildhouses, becuase guild survive longer then the avarage player specially if it has a guildhouse I would think. The ones with the big houses will probably have a lot less trouble finding new members afterall.

But also being able to chose how your guildhall looks like. A library for the knowledgeseekers. A semigardencomplex for the rangers a fortress for the warriors? It would give people more way to show their identity as a group that way aswell.

General Discussion / God RPing
« on: August 24, 2006, 06:54:26 pm »
Is it just me or is lately everyone possesed by some ubercreature this or that or atleast has some supernatural abilities? Like having a skin that is strong enough to counter all blades or something?

It's really starting to bug me how often some people seem to be falling back on godlike abilities to gain an edge in an RP. Specially if they also start commenting OOC on how you are doing something impossible.

An example of what annoys me. In an RP I followed someone to a hideout in the sewers. There had been a kidnapping and we were face to face with the evil guys. They weren't really persons but something else aparently. "OK" I though and shrugged as that should be able in an fantasy setting afterall. Was prepared for a fight I would probably loose as I asumed the transformation probably made them stronger rather then weaker somehow ;)

Then suddenly someone walked in aswell. He attacked the two friends I was with and seeing his back was turned to me I put a knife to his throat. He smiled and desolves the knife. He also commented OOC that we shouldn't even think of stabbing him as his skin was so well trained blades couldn't possibly cut him.

You raising the eyebrow yet?

I mean come on we just had a post by the devs stating roleplaying should atleast be based somewhat on skills you actually have ingame. Now I don't mind a special move or some special ability to make your character unique but atleast have it be based somewhat on skills that are ingame or will be.

Invincible godlike people are the worst roleplayers in my opinion as they kill the joy for everyone else and they are often people who can't take it when someone else does the same as I have seen in many cases where it became a simple "Who got the fanciest godpower" competition that I leave fast as it's very annoying if you are playing a person thats within mortal standards :P

Thank you for reading my rant :P

Guilds Forum / [Guild] The Black Flames
« on: August 03, 2006, 08:56:15 pm »
Our story,
our place in the setting

As the Flame came to the first city the people came out to see this wonder. Miracles followed the Flame which the people had never seen before and the people accepted the flame to be part of Laanx send to look after them. Soon the people realized the Flame was different then Laanx had been. It was different in that it desired other things like glyphs that were very rare to enhance its power and other magical objects. It was also less demanding of his followers and more caring although it still had quite the selfish streak. Still the people felt that with the story Laanx had told them that this must be one of the better pieces of Laanx that could not bear to leave her followers all alone.

The religion over the years changed and several generations later the people in the cities had all accepted the Black Flame as their true god. The High Priests had decided that the Black Flame was the good in Laanx soul that had separated from the Masked God and that the Laanx that had left was the holder of everything evil about Laanx. This ran through the cities and was quite a shock, but soon this was accepted as people realized this meant their Black Flame would guard over them and was truly worthy of their worship. However also in the years after this there came fanatics who said that the Masked God should be destroyed as now the powers of Laanx were divided.

The fanatics made orders and as the Masked God was not to be found in the cities they moved outwards sending spies to other lands. But no matter how much they searched they could not find the Masked God till the Black Flame inspired one of the leaders and let the leader know of portals that led to Near Yliakum. Many rumors were heard but finally it was confirmed. Laanx had moved to Yliakum to try and convert the people there. The fanatic orders joined forces and together they send out their best people to go to Yliakum and make sure to destroy the power of the Masked God by observing and finding her weak spot if any. Also they were send to make sure the people would not follow the Masked God to destroy the ones that did turn to the evil.

As the ones send arrived in Yliakum they noticed that the situation was even worse then the scouts and spies had reported. The Masked God was well established in these lands and the followers were very fanatic. For years they managed to work in secrecy increasing their influence, but besides gathering information they couldn't do much. Several attempts were made to decrease the following of the Masked God but only with mild success.

Then they devised a daring plan that would seriously hurt the Masked God by showing the general populace what horror this Masked God really was, slowly they moved their pieces but as they were preparing this plan they still showed their true colors a little to much and they were discovered by the followers of Laanx. Only a select few among the Religion of Laanx were informed of why these people were really brought to the sacrificial altars as of course the followers of Laanx wanted to get rid of these people without revealing this religion to the general public. Swift and deadly their response still was and only few survived the sacrificial altars.

The few who remained taught their children their dislike of the Masked God and the strict rules of obedience the god asked. Still around, these children are now again living in the shadows. All needing to find their own life but still locked together in their hatred of the Masked God and the rules they are forced to follow so not to attract the attention of the followers of Laanx. Waiting and building up their influence till the time is there again to move.

Several generations have passed and no one remembers the Black Flame in Yliakum except for the decendants of the children that remained so long ago. Their hatred has not diminished but in the shadows they remain, slowly working towards their goal. If one thing the decendants have learned how to be patient.

- Never ever talk about yourself as evil. Our chars believe what they are doing is the right thing. In our view, we are the good.

As mentioned the guild is working in secret. We tried to make a guild that makes use of the setting of Planeshift and that would add to the story. 99.9% of Yliakum doesn't know about the Black Flame, but still we see potential in this way. If you feel you are really one of us please PM me your ingame name and online time and someone will approach you ingame as soon as possible. Hope to see many of you ingame.

Roleplaying (Communitive Storywriting) / Garile's history
« on: July 28, 2006, 06:06:32 pm »
Garile smiled and looked over her shoulder where her daddy was. "Daddy? Daddy!!! Hurry!" Daddy just smiled as he and Mommy were walking arm in arm down the street following Garile. "Daddy!!!" Garile turned around and started running again. She ran a few corners. Suddenly she heard a scream behind her. She looked around and saw three strangers stand around Daddy. Mommy was laying on the ground and seemed strangely silent. "Hello Germaino" one of the strangers said. Suddenly Daddy took out two daggers and ran towards the man who had spoken slicing past one of the others neck, but then the strangers put their own swords in Daddy's body. Daddy coughed blood and sludged against the stranger who had spoken. "You shouldn't have resisted Laanx Germaino. The Black Flame wont help you here." Then the strangers threw Daddy on the ground. Picked up the one Daddy had hurt and carried him of. Garile ran to Daddy when the strangers were gone.

Daddy was cold. "Daddy... DADDY!!!"

***

Alan bumped against the drunk Klyros and as the Klyros turned angered Garile quickly slid of the purse at his strings and hid it under her clothes walking futher like nothing happened. At the corner she passed the purse to another kid. This was what she was doing now that she had been taken in by "uncle Karos". This or being a lookout for burglars or helping the beggars or very rarely a poor performer.

***

"No Karos!!" She slapt away his hand, but Karos only laughed. "Pretty girl like you needs protection Garile"He licked his lips as he said this. "You're a bit young but you'll learn to enjoy it". Garile quickly jumped over the table and ran out the door being followed by Karos's laughter. She knew she had to leave or next time it might no longer be teasing. As she had started blossoming this year Karos had been looking at her strangely followed by these comments and he was getting harder and harder to ignore. Quickly she ran around the corner into the girls room and got her bag which she had already packet and crawled out the small window.

***

She felt pain all over. Gurius had not been gentle. Tears streamed out of her eyes. Why didn't Gurius love her? She did everything he wanted didn't she? Then a coldness came over her. Not to long after Gurius came back in to the room laughing. "Still sobbing love? Would think you would be over that by now. A little pain for my love." The sarcasm and the laughing was more then Garile could bear. After these weeks of taken advantage of and to be spoken to like that by someone she had been in love with made something snap. Slowly she rose and walked to her torn clothes in the corner. "What do you think you are doing love?" Gurius walked towards her and grabbed her by one of her arms. Garile just grabbed her knife with her other without Gurius who slapped her in the face noticing "You're not going to do anything without me telling so. Understand?"

Garile just looked up and as Gurius laughed again her dagger sliced along his throat leaving a trail of blood. Gurius suddenly looked suprised as his hand moved to his neck. A gurgling sound came out of his mouth while he walked till he hit the wall. But inexperienced as Garile was in killing she had not cut deep enough. Gurius looked angry and tore one of his sleeves of and bound it around his neck and then got one of the swords that was standing in the corner. Gurius sweeped it at Garile. Garile just stepped aside only just enough to not be hit and walked into Gurius blindspot and as Gurius eyes grew larger Garile drove her dagger in his heart.

***

Smiling Garile looked at the guy she was seducing tonight. He wasn't badlooking but she didn't care much. Just aslong as he bought her things she would be nice to him. For now. He carressed her cheek and said "I would love to spend the night with you" Garile giggled knowing he wasn't rich enough by far to get that far. As the night progressed her date became more frisky and he started to annoy her. Finally he had to go to the bathroom. Garile ordered a drink saying her date would pay and then moved on to the dancefloor heading for the exit. Outside she looked at the gems in her date's former purse and put it away again. Then she walked away thinking it would be a good idea to move to the next town in the morning.

********************************************************************************************************************

Internet was down so finally wrote the history that I was planning to. Among other things ;)

These are some events highlighted to show the history of Garile before I started playing her as a character.

Comments are welcomed.

General Discussion / Guilds and the setting
« on: July 25, 2006, 11:54:46 am »
As the world of Yliakum evolves in our community many guilds have gone and gone and some even survived till this day.

However the compatiibility of the guilds to the setting has not always been the best. This has been becuase of two reasons. People who start guilds to fast without really knowing the setting and a setting that doesn't say that much sadly about how most things work in this way and age. For example we know there is a religion of the Dark Flame, but do we know anything about what kind of religion it is? Even with Laanx and Talad who atleast we know as gods we don't know how they like to be worshipped and how much communication there is between the gods and the people.

I think this could be improved if guilds could only be created if they have a story that does fit the setting and if the devteam would include more members to work on the setting.  At the moment only one person is in the settingsteam and adding more information to the setting has been quite slow and feel the major things in day to day life should be adressed somewhere so we know how the world looks like for our characters. Also the first wouldn't really work if there is only one person who is already writing settings who needs to check the settingstories written by potential guildleaders.

General Discussion / Death of the Beggar
« on: July 22, 2006, 08:37:54 pm »
IN a roleplay I encountered a possible murder was comitted. The problem herein was not as much the roleplayin as this was quite nicely done,, but the problem I encountered that others also seemed to have is how to deal with the absent authorities.

Murder ofcourse would normally bring out the guard or the police, but how should you roleplay this?

There ofcourse are two parts in this question:
How would the guard react in a world as Yliakum were things are different from our world including more primitive in technology.
How do we RP this in a way that is most convincing and least disruptive to people so it feels natural that it happens this way.

I have my own opinions partially but would like to hear others opinions first. :)

On the corner of the stairs leading to the northern gate you see a boy standing

"READ ALL ABOUT IT. BEGGAR KILLED IN COLD BLOOD. HIGH PRIESTESS XILLIX MAIN SUSPECT. READ ALL ABOUT IT"

You realize the boy is selling newspapers. "Hydlaa Gazette" you read. You are interested enough to buy one of the papers and start reading the main story.

"High Priestess kills beggar" The headline reads.

Yesterday several people witnessed something very shocking. At the Iron Temple of Laanx one of the many beggars coming there to visit the Vespers of Laanx was killed by the leader of the Vespers Xillix. After this the High Priestess locked herself in one of the rooms of the temple and refused to let anyone in saying it was for their own protection. Many who witnessed the events can't believe Xillix would do such a thing and have remarked that she might have been controlled.

Even with such an event to happen in such an open and public place the guard was not informed and no investigation except by the Vespers themselves is going on. This reporter has heard people remark that there was no way a priest of Laanx could be objective about their own leader and that a neutral party should be the one to investigate. This reporter fears that the reason the guard has not intervened yet is because of the power of money that the Vespers seem to have. When the guard was asked why they had not started their own investigation they replied that it had not been brought to their attention. Xillix has confirmed the Vespers had indeed not told the guard or the police about the incident.

Many asked why Xillix would do such a thing. Being possessed has been mentioned, but who exactly would do such a thing has remained vague except a view pointing at a few thieves who had raided the temple before. How these tavern dwellers would suddenly have found the skill to do this could not really be answered.

Rumors have been going around that in sercret human sacrifices are still being held. Someone even suggested that the stream of beggars would be ideal as who would notice that one less beggar would come out the temple? This combined with the abvious fanatiscm the Vespers show one thinks this may be a motive for the High Priestess. If simply naming Talads name requires a priest to spill some of his own blood to redeem themselves what would the High-Priestess do to redeem a beggar using the name of Laanx in an insulting way? Even more blood? Perhaps kill the nonbeliever in a fit of rage?

Whatever the reason is the Vespers seem to be hiding something. Were it human sacrifices and a fanatic High Priestess or if it's simply feeling a beggars live doesn't matter much. The Vespers seem not to be who they claim to be. Are they really the helpers of the helpless or is something more sinister working behind the scene. Just think of the nature of the Masked God. The same god that asked human sacrifices before is now the patron god of an order that helps the weak and helpless?

A neutral investigation of this murder seems to be a requirement and hopefully this investigation will be able to answer some of the questions that have risen around this Order.

Two days back suddenly my camara view changed. Press M then you say and yes changing back to 3rd person was no problem and although a few of the other views seem strange aswell the 3rd person was working alright. The only problem I'm really having is that the collision Detction is turned of now and whenever I try to tag the box and save the settings Planeshift freezes on me. Waited for 15 minutes one time and still it remained frozen.

Wish list / Guildwars
« on: February 28, 2006, 09:43:01 pm »
Why have a guildwar? I think it should be a way for when talking isn\'t helping on who is right. Specially with evil guilds and good guilds oposing eachother there should be some violence sometimes. Wouldn\'t be very realistic otherwise ;)

But how do you know who won in the end? I think there should be a way that determines who won the war when it ends. If it\'s most kills or something more refined like a spot that has to be held for so long, but I feel there should be a winner given by the server so not to get that both sides claim victory and the war not resulting in anything.

General Discussion / balancing.
« on: February 28, 2006, 09:38:00 pm »
Today I confirmed that there are indeed slash 10 weapons out there. Yeah by getting killed by one ;)

I am pretty sorry to find this out. Not becuase it means there are people with stronger weapons then me (will always be those as much as I RP and chat instead of train ;) ), but becuase it brings back one slash killing in dueling.

I know there might be some debate on it being realistic or not. Also when comparing to how long it takes to kill creatures, but I would like to request for the max damage you can do to be less then 25% of your HP to bring some fun back in dueling. To bring back some tactics and fun in guildwars. No fun if the one who wins is the one who says BOO first and your dead.

General Discussion / Roleplaying in PS
« on: February 24, 2006, 11:57:27 pm »
Or perhaps interaction between people would be a good title or ingame economics or ingame stories.

The point is that I feel that the part that makes PS different from other games is being neglected by the dev team. Ofcourse PS has some great graphics and such but in thee/five years they wont amount to that much when PS might be finished and in the end thats not what keeps people coming back.

One of the great things about PS is it\'s community and it\'s focus on roleplaying inside the game. It\'s a plus that makes a certain group of people return for what they don\'t find in other games.

But although the development of the game itself is going forward the development of the community and of the stories within PS to make the world a whole have been neglected making this huge plus point less.

One can notice the avarage PS playing age decreasing. 6 months ago you would find players who have been around for over 18 months. Now finding people from before CB\'s release is pretty hard. Specially ingame.

To have a good RPcommunity ingame it needs to be encouraged. Player interaction through things like an economy should be encouraged. To have a story ingame that inspires people to use that as parts of their story is important aswell so those parts can be used to interact more easely in RP between players.

I really feel the dev team shouuld take on more storywriters and more roleplayers so to get more out of planeshifts strength as it seems to be truely needed now the game is progressing in mechanics.

General Discussion / Leveling: not harder but easy
« on: January 18, 2006, 06:00:04 am »
There have been people who have been complaining about how leveling of stats is to much on the mind of people. Most want to combat this by making it harder.

But then your only making the problem worse. The people who want that have to spend even more tim e on it.

My solution would be to make it a lot easier. Make it so it\'s not that it takes months of slaying to reach the max.

In guildwars for example the max level is only 20 wich you reach if you want in 2/3 week the first time you play. There goald ofcourse isn\'t to get people to roleplay but to focus more on the skills and to build the perfect combo and focus more on PvP I guess.

Now this system could also work well with planeshift but instead of having people max and let them focus on skills they should be persuaded to focus more on Roleplaying.

General Discussion / Does it benefit RP to make the game harder?
« on: December 17, 2005, 11:10:28 pm »
I have been seeing in a lot of threads that a lot of people feel that roleplaying should be enforced by making the game elements so hard it\'s practicly unplayable and in this way only be left with people who roleplay.

Now ofcourse this makes you wonder why you should make a game anyhow, but my question is if this would really work.

If you make the game harder will people start roleplaying? Will the \"powerlevelers\" leave? Personally I think not.

I think that if you make the game elements harder you will only get more powerlevelers and the people you lose are the people who like to roleplay but also have a little fun playing the game now and then.

The powerlevelers wont leave becuase now their work pays of for real. It takes a lot of effort to become strong in a skill and so you will have to train endlessly to get anywhere.

The ones leaving will be the ones annoyed by this will be the ones who roleplay but not all the time. They\'ll see that their efforts towards training something will not be enough to really make a dent and will probably give up on it. Some may turn to roleplaying, but I think many wont find that alone satisfying and in the end PS will lose these players.

PS would then be really be consisting of two groups. One of powerlevelers and one of hardcore roleplayers. This is ofcourse asuming PS has enough roleplayers who actually are ingame enough to still have a community with the loss of the \"semiroleplayers\"

General Discussion / Community involving - Cardgame
« on: December 13, 2005, 08:17:33 am »
Well ofcourse I am in no position to do anything about it, but still I have been wondering how with a game like PS you could get the community involved with really making Planeshift.

An idea I had was perhaps hold a contest sometime for graphicss and to make it a little less challenging with the 3d stuff I was thinking of graphics for a cardgame.

It is mentioned once that someday a cardgame is planned andThink it might be a great idea to ask the community to send in things they made themselves.

If everyone send in one card the devs could use them perhaps to make the cardset and you have a whole lot of art taken from the community that is in the game.

What do you all think? Good idea? Impossible?

General Discussion / Becoming a GM
« on: December 09, 2005, 08:12:32 am »
Not to criticize but I was wondering how GMs are chosen as I heard the advisory points aren\'t a good reason anymore.

I do agree that advisory points shouldn\'t be the only reason, but I do think something like a minimum requirement would be a good idea for two reasons.

1. To become a GM I think one should show dedication.

2. This way you look at other people when they reach that requirement.

Reason 1 is obvious. I think someone shouldn\'t become a GM just becuase he has good contacts. I think it should be someone who likes helping people and although advisory isn\'t the best way it is an easy way to check someone has the minimum requirements to do this.

Reason 2 is also important I think becuase you should never just look at people you like. As PS is a community and the GMs should represent the community. Ofcourse a more active part of the community but still with different views that work together for the greater good (being PS and the fun playing it ofcourse ;) ) and somehwat a middleground between the devs and the players.

As I said I don\'t want to use this to bash the ?stablishment\" or anything, but I do hope the devs and GMs will concider these points for their GM selection process as I think just following these points would greatly help get a good GM team.

I look forward to your replies :)
