General Discussion / Damage balance
« on: April 06, 2007, 10:24:27 am »
First off, thank you Devs. I see that despite RL issues and lack of time, you still manage to try new things and move PS forward. It's a bumpy ride, too slow for some to notice sometimes, but there are constant improvements and it's important to acknoweledge them, no matter how small they are.

I want to say I'm very pleased with the latest damage tweaking done (silverweave and iron weapons, and damage output in general). I think this was long needed as it makes it impossible for any half trained character to have one hit kills, while those who spend their time and tria mastering a combat skill do have that chance (which, makes sense having become "masters" of it). It validates the reason to train a skill other than just "maxing out" and can provide a good element of RP. Not to mention that now the stronger mobs can be a real threat if you're not grouped. And it might be just my impression but, have DPs also been tweaked? That needed some attention too.

Now, all in the spirit of balancing things out, I have a little question: why do combat skills have different max levels? Isn't the damage each weapon inflicts and their speed a strong enough difference? I understand some might be easier to learn but that doesn't have to mean that they can't have the same maximum level. I'd like to hear what the rationale behind this is. Just to know, really (I'm rather curious).

Well, keep up the good work devs! Kudos and thank you again. :D

Wish list / 'Edit your description' Message
« on: March 13, 2007, 10:07:26 am »
Whenever a new character is created we all get a summary of all the life events and details we picked in the process and that appears in the character's description. I think it can be helpful if you want to take note of what you did in order to get certain stats or simply to remember what your choices were but I think it is also terribly OOC to stay in a description once you've had the chance to take note.

As far as I know, descriptions are meant to be things others would perceive just by being near to your character: how you look, smell, move, etc. Unless you walk around with a T-Shirt that says "My mother was a dancer and a Talad priestess" I don't think those who meet you for the first time should have access to this information without having to talk to you.

I guess it's not mandatory to alter your description (it would be good RP but it should not obligatory) but it doesn't mean we cannot suggest doing so. What I'm talking about is adding a line to the very first description our characters get, the one with all our life events. Something like this:

"Character Summary:
Father: Miner
Mother: Librarian
Blah, blah, blah...

Make a good first impression. Edit your description to let others know what you look like in the Stats and Skills window."

A good description can be your ticket to the never-ending fun RP is :D. Just let everyone know it.

General Discussion / How necessesary is the guild chat tab?
« on: February 22, 2007, 03:21:02 am »
Just wondering... yeah, it has many advantages to have an exclusive guild channel but I've found that, given certain circumstances, it can easily get in the way and disrupt RP.

For example, if there are too many OOC guild messages "spamming" your main tab making you lose track of the actual RP taking place. Or when someone uses the guild chat to exchange IC information with characters who are impossible to reach IC, given their location or physical limitations (being ICly unconscious, drunk or gagged), unless godmodding. I think it's ok to comment but not to actually affect a character's actions with OOC leaks, like "come to the plaza right now! i'm unconscious and being kidnapped!".

It's hard enough to keep IC and OOC separate sometimes and maybe the guild chat isn't helping but doing the exact opposite. What are the alternatives? There are lots of ways to communicate  with guildmates that can be presented IC like emoting, yelling, whispering or speaking in code. In terms of mechanics, /tell or /group can replace the guild chat if privacy is needed  (either for OOC or IC reasons) yet the characters' actions remain IC or at least don't have an easy OOC way to reach other players and exchange info that should remain IC. The IC way usually requires more typing and might be a bit slower but then... what's the rush? I say let's enjoy RP.

Now, I'm not saying it's a bad feature, it offers many advantages. I'd just like to open the discussion: can it be so OOC that it can become a problem or is it a must and the game would be spoiled without it?

I can see good points in both sides but I'd like to hear other opinions.

General Discussion / NPCs' Stories
« on: January 06, 2007, 03:38:38 pm »
There are certain NPCs out there we all interact with: they are the trainers, shopkeepers, or bystanders we sometimes incorporate in our RP. I think NPCs shouldn't play huge parts in our RPs but involving them to some extent is a good touch, especially because they are not godmodders, they "know everyone" and many of them can be considered specialists in their fields (magic, booze, crafting, etc.). However, we don't want them to have split personalities and that may happen if we don't pay attention when we include them in our plots.

What I was thinking was a very simple but specific story for those characters like Gregori, Trasok, Harnquist, Jefreca, etc. in which their personality would be detailed. Things like "slow to trust and quick to anger", "kind and always eager to help", "womanizer", "hates warriors", "understands half what he hears and makes up the rest", "picks your pocket should he see the opportunity", and that sort of thing. Now, this would be mainly OOC so it wouldn't fit in their descriptions (after all, unless you are some kind of empath or psychic, you wouldn't know all this with just one look) but it would give us players a sense of what these characters would say or do if we wish to give them a part in our plots.

A thread or sticky with a brief story for these 10+ characters wouldn't take much time to write and would help keeping players from making them do stuff they would never do or godmod on them. I think it would be a simple but useful addition to our settings.

Guides and Tutorials / RP Arguments, Fights and Mechs
« on: December 14, 2006, 11:26:05 am »
I've read a couple of threads lately about RP confrontations gone bad because of godmodding or actions going too quick for a player to enjoy so I thought I'd point something out. It's happened to me before when doing some RP that sometimes things quicken up and challenges kick in after just a few words, sending some players to the DR before they can even learn what's going on. Sure, you can say it may be realistic in some level (as in "my character is quick to anger and doesn't have the patience to deal with strangers butting in"), but the point should always be that all players involved have fun.

Many players think that just because they have a maxed character or because the person they are talking to is "significantly weaker" they can play bullies and /challenge if they see a sign of opposition coming from the weaker character. This makes them think they can RP anything just because they are stronger, like "order" you around or gormod in a RP fight. I am not refering to any particular case or person here, but I've seen this happen a couple of times, usually involving a poor RPer with a PLed character on the "bully" side. They come in, RP little, and think that everything has to be settled in /challenge. Dead RP.

Whereas I think that game mechanics can help limit what your character can do (who's faster, who's stronger, who has a better chance to do something) and cannot do, they should only be a reference, and we need to be flexible about how to use them. In reality, what your character can do or cannot do depends more on what other players grant you in each situation.

UTM's idea when Janeous used many ingenious traps to stop those hunting him down worked out pretty well. He used your stats as a reference to see if you would be able to avoid or endure the trap. Other game mechs like rolling dice are also a good way to compromise. What to roll and how to determine success or failure is up to the players and the situation at hand. Using these game mechs is much more interesting than basing your judgement of a situation on a character's description. If you really want to RP, having these being part of what you do would allow you and others around to be involved and not die so quickly. It also keeps lots of OOC crap out of the way.

Now, another important factor is that you cannot force people to join your RP just as much as you cannot ignore other people's RP. I think we are entitled to the choice of whether or not we want to RP with someone or a certain situation. However, our way in and out of a RP cannot be disruptive. If you find yourself being dragged into a RP you don't wish try to find an IC way to get yourself out of it (like calling the guards or standing right next to them, leaving the city or place where the RP is happening, etc.). If the others won't listen or seem to be interested in having their way no matter what, explain to them OOC that you are not interested. What may come out of it if you do the latter is that they might not want to RP with you again (but if you tried the first and they, in fact, didn't respect your right to have fun, you will probably be better off not RPing with them either).

This leads us to how certain situations are brought IC. I find it a turn-off when evil characters are dumb enough as to pretend they can do evil stuff in plain sight and bare no consequences to their IC actions. Sure, game mechs won't respond to that. Guards don't move. They'd rather have you bring them their lunch or train you than leave their post to catch a punk BUT this doesn't mean there are no laws. When an evil action takes place with no regards of guards, witnesses, and laws, I prefer not to be involved or if I find myself somewhat involved, my expectations on the outcome are rather low and I try to find a quick way out.

So, summing up:

- Don't rush to /challenge just to prove your point. It's anti-climatic and leaves no room to RP or enjoy what is going on. Don't be the one-minute-RPer, sending others to the DR before they get to have a little fun. They could RP being unconscious and still follow up the RP and the effect would be the same. Likewise, if you put a little event together, try to keep the challenges for the very last moment if at all.

- Using mechs that are fair for all players, like rolling dice using current stats or personality traits has worked wonderfully in my experience (because even the mightiest can fail and the weakest have lucky strike).

- You have the right to choose whether or not to join any RP but you should try to make your way in or out of it IC. A plain "[not interested]" is not good enough, just like being a punk ignoring facts that are not yet integrated to game mechs (like guards doing their job). Both attitudes are turn-offs and will probably ban you from a player's "People I like to RP with" list.

And, on a final note:

Our IC actions are independent from game mechanics simply because at the moment the game doesn't give us enough animations or mechs to support the extent of our RP. However, I've always thought that a character's personality has to be related somehow to their current stats and skills and not wander off too far from them to prevent godmodding. However, this should also apply the other way arround, limiting the choices this character makes in terms of training to those areas where they would have interest IC.

A character who can do everything because they're trained in it all (magic, mining, crafting, combat, etc.) and who RPs knowledge in all these fields is less likely to be considered a specialist or an expert in any of those. You may want to have a fully trained character, but would your character want that? Would they really like doing everything? Very few people do or are able to IRL so why RP that a character would? If you RP that your character is fully commited to only a few fields of knowledge (despite the fact that you've trained them in other fields as well for OOC reasons like needing to mine to pay for training or needing to fight to get experience), you are choosing where you are most likely to succeed and where you're most likely to need help.

Personally, I would grant a player the ability to cast spells that are not implemented in-game yet if they consistently RP that they are wizards and that magic is their main field of interest, just like I would grant a consistent herbalist the skill to treat a deadly poison successfully because they work their RP around those skills. It is not something they get out of the hat. A fighter/wizard/ninja/demi-god is a pain in the neck. You're much more likely to get your way if you choose an actual path for your character. And that gives room for situations in which you will need the help of other characters, encouraging more interaction between characters. Wouldn't that make sense?

There. I'm done. Sorry for the long post. Again, I am not referring to anyone or any situation in particular. These are just a few ideas based on my experience in the game.

Wish list / Bleeding and Weapon Mastery
« on: November 22, 2006, 11:00:15 am »
When everyone can one hit kill with half their training and a strong weapon, I don't like it. Especially because this is allowed by lag, combat bugs and the damage increase of 50/50 quality. It takes less skill and more luck to be the winner of such duels. I've always thought that reducing the damage weapons inflict would be a good solution. That way, only those who master a combat skill could actually kill you in just a few blows.

So here are three thoughts:

1) What if there was bleeding damage? Let's say you get hit in a duel for 50dmg, you're maxed in stats so you can still fight. But you're wounded. So, you bleed. As you bleed your HP or your physical stamina starts dropping slowly, unless you heal you close the wound magically. That way you could kill someone with one hit, but with a little bit more realism.

2) Also, I think that as you progress in a combat skill, you should be able to inflict critical hits every now and then, so one hit kills can happen but you need to be highly trained for it to be somewhat common (20-30% chance perhaps?).

3) And finally, as you master a combat skill, you should be able to use your weapons to block more and while we're at it, attacking after successfully blocking should have a higher chance of inflicting a critical hit. A quick counterattack often does in RL because it take advantage of the broken guard of the opponent.

General Discussion / Yliakum Trivia Game
« on: November 20, 2006, 03:31:51 pm »
Since we're all waiting for the new update, I figured we could take some time to learn more about our beloved settings. So, why not have a little forum game to pass time? So, here's how it goes:

1. I'll be posting questions about Yliakum: our world, its history, its people, its gods... you name it.

2. When a question in answered correctly, I'll post another one until I'm out of questions or the update is ready.

3. I'll keep track of who answers them correctly the fastest.

4. The person with the most winning answers will be the winner.

5. The community has five chances to post the correct answer. That means that only 5 posts by different users are allowed before I give the answer. If 5 posts are made with incorrect answers, nobody gets any points.

I'll try to post new questions as soon as the answers are posted. If you got any suggestions, PM me. Let's try to keep this thread for Questions and Answers only.

Ok, here's the first question:

Wish list / Poisoned items
« on: November 18, 2006, 03:42:00 pm »
The idea is to have poisoned items that would actually kill someone without having to ask the target to use the /die command, maybe a poison vial or pouder you could use on food or other items a number of times. Then when you give someone else the item and they use it, you wouldn't have to go ooc to explain they've ingested poison and that they should die...

Different effects of poison would be more interesting depending on the kind and dose, like an instant effect or a weakening effect that would kill the target over time. This would allow the target to try and find antidote. You could craft the poison using alchemy or herbal or maybe if there were snakes you could "loot" poison from them.

Technical Help: IN GAME bugs (after loading world) / Lucky Teleportation
« on: November 13, 2006, 01:08:45 am »
This happens to me a LOT when I duel:

- When engaged in PvP, I jump constantly because I've found that it helps prevent falling off the edge of the world.

- While doing this, often times I get killed in mid air (nothing wrong with that, it actually looks very dramatic).

- About 3/5 times it happens I get teleported back to the point I was killed at (the system sends me where I should've landed in the first place), right when I (re)load in the DR. It doesn't happen that often when in the living realm but it's happened too (ulber chews, zhai dies, immediately comes back, ulber chews again... kinda like bulimia only backwards).

There is little I can do to prevent or promote the teleportation, so there's no way to actually exploit this bug other than being lucky. However, it's worth mentioning.

Mac OSX Specific Issues / Dual-Clienting for Mac and other things...
« on: November 12, 2006, 05:22:24 pm »
I vaguely remember being able to do it when I started playing in april... Now I can't do it. Haven't changed computers or OS though, just updated and reinstalled a couple of times. Can mac clients dual-client? (log-in with different accounts at the same time, that is). Not that I need to but I was wondering if this was a Mac limitation. Any ideas?

On another note: these are just a few problems I've had for a while now. Nothing too serious but since I'm posting I might as well address them.

1) I reinstalled the game a few days ago. Ran the updater but I still can't see the stuff implemented with the last update like the new animations, kran armor (I only see the helmets) and even lost some skins! (I can't see chain mail on Klyros or elves).

2) Besides that, my relight panel seems broken too. The BD area is half black and when I use the setup ap. to relight it I only get "relighting standby" and nothing else.

3) On top of that, my client suddenly quits. Sometimes compulsively and with no explanation.

4) And finally, I can't save logs even though my options are set to do it.

In short: my client's a mess... BUT I can still play so I don't really care :sweatdrop:. However, any help will be much appreciated. Thank you.

Two things I noticed by accident that might need some tweaking:

- While repairing two blades of the same kind I hit my dequip shortcut when I was done with the first. It piled up with the one that wasn't repaired yet. Suddenly, the 50/50 quality one and the 30/50 quality one were shuffled together, both ending up with 44/50 quality.

- While swaping items between alts, I went behind a secluded corner in town and dropped two 0/50 quality blades, logged off and on again as another character and the quality had been reset to 50/50.

In-Game Roleplay Events / [RP] Hydlaa's Crafts and Wares Fair
« on: September 20, 2006, 09:37:25 am »
Zhai enters through the North Gate after a few days away from town. Her attention is caught by two men lifting a banner above the stairs to Rinna and Boralis' Emporium. Downstairs, a very large yet short Ylian is giving them instruction in the most histrionic of ways. As he walks backwards to take a good look at the banner, he stumbles into her. He hisses immediately. "Zzzzzzz! Away with you peasant! Don't you see I'm busy! Well? Don't just stand there looking at me like that! Move on!... Shoo!". Zhai stares at the man not sure whether to laugh or not. He insists. "Shoo, I said! Sh...*ugh*", his knees bent, her hand gripping his neck tightly and his face rapidly getting all sort of colors. Then she lets go. The two men dropped the banner along with their jaws and now she can read the letters of gold as it falls down.

Hydlaa's Crafts and Wares Fair!

Hosted by Lord Baídín Fheilimí IV.

Come and see Hydlaa's finest crafts and goods

She realizes the man she was about to beat up was no other than Lord Baídín Fheilimí himself, the famous patron of the arts and socialite, known for his passion for poetry, music, fine arts and food as well as for his active presence in Hydlaa's high society.

- A fair?- She says.

-Zzzzz! Yes, you uncivilized creature... I, Lord Baídín Fheilimí IV, will be hosting it and all of Hydlaa's finest citizens will be attending. The best crafters and the most resourceful merchants will be there showing their goods. It will be wonderful!

- Sounds like fun.

- Not for you! I will be hiring security of course! And you will not be allowed in there!

Zhai rolls her eyes and starts walking away, yet the idea of a fair does sound like fun. Many of her friends will do well showing up their crafts there. "Well, I guess I could sneak in", she thinks...

*     *     *

[Join the Fair! It's about time to see what our crafters can do. All merchants are welcome as well: weapons, rare items, food, whatever you want to sell. Let's see who has the best products! The fair will be held in Hydlaa's "Uptown" Gardens. Crafters and merchants can sign up here. They will each get a "stand" and they can show their wares through trade widnows. Customers can check the items' stats there and make offers if wanted. Maybe someone can volunteer for a magic show *cough*Peacer?*cough* and we can give "Master Crafter" medals too for those exceptional items (a RP item of course, which you can add to your description :P). We'll also need a law enforcement guild interested in providing security, sign up here as well. I hope to see you there!].

General Discussion / Damage Increase
« on: August 22, 2006, 01:10:07 pm »
:detective: I'm just wondering why damage was suddenly increased. I personally don't like it that much and sorry if this bothers those of you who are enjoying it but I'm merely wondering what the rationale behind it is. Yes, everyone complained when damage was being affected by the repair skill but now that it suddenly increased not a single comment has been made. Maybe I'm spoiling it for y'all :-[ (sorry).

Anyway, the minimum-maximum damage range also seems way too wide, with silverweave ss being able to inflict 350-520dmg when they used to do 260-300 before, and same thing with daggers... And as I said, I personally don't see much sense in it but if there's a reason, I could use the enlightment. Thanks.

Guilds Forum / [GUILD] Rangers of Yliakum
« on: August 10, 2006, 12:49:09 pm »
[I decided to post a new thread about the rangers given the many changes the guild has undergone in the past few months and also to avoid reviving very old topics. You can check these links: The Rangers' Guild, Rangers Unite, Rangers of Yliakum - Remade to get the whole story of the guild.]

The Rangers of Yliakum is a neutral guild which finds its purpose in helping its members make their place in our world. We are all part of something bigger, something beyond good and evil, for destruction and rebirth are part of nature's eternal cycle. Our balance lies in motion, it is not a still image, a frozen morality that offers no evolution. We are meant to change, to grow and to learn but this can only be accomplished if we are in harmony with our world.

A ranger is selfless yet indomable. A ranger is warm like the light of the Azure Crystal but cold as a night unsheltered when the times deem it. A ranger is a wanderer yet their path is always clear.

We aid those in need and we explore the lands, for both hunt and leisure. We share our love for nature and our passion for adventures. We are skilled fighters and explorers and we have knowledge of certain magics as well.

We have camps all over Yliakum, from the Bronze Doors to Ojaveda, hidden headquartes that help us find shelter and comfort during our travels. We have constant meetings there where we share our adventures and plan our moves.

We are friends with many other guilds. Those that are honorable and respectful of the Gods and the laws of our land are greeted warmly.

And if you are new to our land, seek us and we shall help you asking nothing but one thing in return: that you use our aid to help and protect others and then yourself, respecting their paths between good and evil, following the nature of all things. However, if you shall fail at this and choose the low path, the selfish path, the path of only chaos, the path of immobility, you'll face the consequences of crossing us.

[Out of Character: About the Guild Organization and Purpose

We are a RP-oriented guild. We value original ideas to interact with other players above Powerleveling. We will help you develop your skills for it is part of the fun in PS but we never place it above community events.

Ranks

We are rangers. We follow our own path. We don't need a complex hierarchy to rule our organization. That's why we have basically two ranks and a few special positions for outstanding members. Here they are.

Scout:
The scout is the ranger in training. Their mission is to learn about the world and explore it thoroughly. They should train their skills in the areas they find useful for their paths and serve the guild by learning all they can and doing the quests given to them by the older rangers.

Ranger:
What we are. A ranger can train scouts, offering them certain guidance and sharing the secrets they have learned. They are expected to help the guild by bringing knowledge, by collecting items for our vaults and by mastering their skills as fighters or magicians. They also have the responsibility of recruiting new members.

Druid:
A druid is the ranger who has chosen the path of the arcane arts. They hold the same responsibilities and privileges as any other ranger but they are recognized for the time and effort invested in knowing the secrets of the magiks. A druid is a healer. They have knowledge of herbalism and alchemy and can even resort to powerful spells to defeat their foes.

Guild Champion:
The guild champion is the best duelist in the guild. The strongest fighter, the deadliest in battle. They hold the responsibility to defent the honor of the guild and protect the guild leader. They are the Lady of the Ranger's bodyguard and also guild duel trainer and master hunter.

Guild Mentor:
The wise and elder rangers who have gained thorough knowledge of our world are acknowledged as Mentors. They have the responsibility to guide other rangers and the authority to give them tasks and promote them.

The Lady of the Rangers (Guild Master):
She serves as leader of the rangers. As guild master, she has the responsibility of providing opportunities to grow and enjoy the world of Yliakum and guide the guild with wisdom so it can grow strong. They are to lead by example and help everyone find their place.

Promotions

Promotions depend on Guild Points. They are given based on the following criteria:

- All rangers are expected to be active in-game and in our forums.

- All rangers are expected to be involved in Guild Events such as our weekly meetings and our plots.

- All rangers are expected to create a well round character and place their RP before their powerleveling. We want strong members first in personality and then in skills.

- All rangers are expected to fulfill the responsibilities of their ranks: be it to train their skills, to explore, to help newcomers and new members, to help our community grow in richness and in numbers or to bring knowledge and wisdom to the guild.

Rangers are acknowledged when they do all this and that is expressed with guild points, promotions and prizes. Being in the guild is a way to grow and enjoy Yliakum and also to have access to more things: friends, money, rare items, knowledge and RP.

Not doing anything of the above will not make you lose your points or earn you an invitation to leave the guild but don't expect to be promoted. However, if you don't fulfill the duties of your rank, it could be stripped from you. Those who lead and teach have a greater responsibility. They are to serve the community first.

Our RP Purpose

We don't just stand there and say "we are rangers and we are good fellas", we work with plots that are aimed to cause an effect on the way people interact in-game. it's not only about "guild history" (we welcome storywriting, and we love to RP in our forums) but guild presence in the game. We have both.

We see our guild as a small but growing community that supports its members in their development as characters RP-wise. We hold guild meetings once a week to explore, hunt or just spend time together and we share our knowledge and richness among each other.

We feel that joining a guild is a long term commitment and thus, it should not be taken lightly. We do not want members joining in and quitting a few days later. Approach us, try to spend some time with us and ask around to get unbiased opions and then please sleep on it. We are not going anywhere so we can wait until you've made up your mind. And after all this, if you want to be a Ranger, you will be welcome in our ranks.
