General Discussion / Re: Say thank you
« on: August 22, 2008, 07:35:24 am »
I never did say thank you, where are my manners?! ;)

I just want to say a big thank you to the dev. team for making Planeshift, I had a lot of fun here and it was my first mmorpg experience - sometimes I didn't embrace the roleplay elements as much as I could, but I still tried.

And of course, mmorpg's are nothing without the community and players...

Thanks to Elvi and all the Outlaws for putting up with my nonsense and to all those I knew while I was here (the list would be really long, but you know who you are!!).  I do miss a lot of you and I haven't forgot the fun we had.  That doesn't just go to those I was in a guild with.. or just to those I dueled with regularly (although YWL was fun to organize!!)... but to everyone - so much imagination, deep and interesting back-stories and great thought had gone into people's characters and it was that dynamic that was most powerful in the game.

I never thought I'd say it, but the RP is one of the things I now miss the most.

I wish I had time to get back into the game again but I really don't (2 kids, 2 jobs and a load of other responsibilities make it near impossible)

So to the community and game that I left without really saying bye or thank you to...

Thanks for everything, hope you're all doing well and still having fun.  I have fond memories.. even of the few I didn't necessarily get on that well with. ;)

Take care!!!

1. A completely new mapping system that allows all areas to be properly integrated rather than having to run through areas that act as portals between different maps.

2. *Some* attention to ergonomics in the interface.

3. A faster method of transport, whether that's strategically placed portals, NPCs that offer a transport service or mounts.

4. A much larger death realm and one that isn't so linear in design.  The current one is effectively a single path with a room or two coming off it and it's difficulty to escape is largely dependent on your gamma settings or monitor brightness.

5. Instead of having 3 applications and a seperate process for reporting bugs... have a single launcher application that does it all in one:
a) Manages updates.
b) Allows selection of settings/configuration.
c) Error-report-submission-system (automatically triggered when the game is launched after a crash)
d) Launches the game.

EDIT:

#2 can be achieved with some tweaks and minor changes.
#3 could be achieved by dumping two NPCs in different locations and creating a portal between maps using a mechanism similar to the Winch access - all of this stuff already exists.
#4 would be a map change, but the amount of black space doesn't require a lot of detail, just a few more walkways could give the place a bit of depth.
#5 is consolidating existing code/applications rather than developing anything new.

#1 though, after reading Thom's post below... I take back... my bad... that'd be far too major a change... but the rest could make use of existing code and existing functionality.

Also, remember that "simple" can be a subjective term.  To me, re-using or consolidating existing code/functions/etc. is "simple" (I'm a developer btw, so that may have some influence)... so besides my bogus #1 suggestion... I personally consider the rest to be fairly straightforward. ;)

Complaint Department / Re: 7 issues that irritate a lot of people...

1: They are pretty much fixed and they only occured in the last few days, why make a big point out of it?
2: I don't get stuck that much anymore and the new /unstick command has never failed me in the new release.
3: I never had this, ever. Maybe it's just your PC?
4: Granted.
5: The NPC-client is already way more stable than in the former release, why make a big point out of it?
6: Then why are you complaining and why don't you report those "item stack" bugs as I've never heard of them.

1. Because many other people have been, as such it was a regularly moaned about thing, thus I included it in my list.
2. It's true that it has improved a bit, but the problem still exists.
3. Reported by many people... and the GMs even teleport people back there because it's a known issue.. in other words.. NO, it's not just my PC.
4. I know.
5. Because many people are.
6. Because they've already been reported and complained about.

Thom.. no need to be defensive, I can justify every point legitimately and I'm not posting this to take swipes, just to summarize the main issues people are having.  I didn't mean for anyone to get wound up over it.

Why am I making an issue out of broken things?... because they're broken... and this is the complaints thread... isn't it?

I apologise for being insensitive... I should have wrote:

- It would be a good idea to fix the server crashes that people say happen excessively.
- It would be good to either remodel the maps or change the code that handles the maps so that we don't get stuck on slopes all the time.
- I'd like to suggest ammending the Winch and BD maps or maybe even the lighting system so that they don't cause everyone's computers to have a little problem repeatedly every time an in-game-hour passes.
- It would be marvellous if you could reprogram or tweak the questing system so that we can be able to do multiple quests at once without any negative repurcussions.  I'd love to see this feature come back if it's possible!?
- I love the encouragement to roleplay and mine gold which in turn makes my character find friends and become wealthy... but please could you switch the mobs on a little more frequently maybe by doing something special with the NPC-Client?!
- I like the new inventory system, it seems much much better... except that a few people have problems with item stacks.

But I was impatient at the time.

- excessive server crashes.
- getting stuck on many slopes on the maps.
- crashes that send you back to your spawn point.
- dodgy maps that cause people's OS's to freeze briefly every couple of seconds for a duration of about 20-30 seconds whenever there's a change of lighting.
- a questing system that allows only one quest at a time for fear of conflicts arising from a sloppy questing system (in terms of programming).. which maximises the tedious running back and forth people have to do. (Take Tolol's complaint posted just before this thread on the quest running back-and-forth and multiply that many times!!)
- mobs impervious far too often than they should be.
- messed up inventory system.

There were other complaints but these ones are specifically related to flaws/errors/crashes/bugs some of which seem to have hung around far too long... and I wasn't aiming to be petty... just listing the things that are most apparent and that I've seen others also getting irritated with.

Of course my petty complaints list is much bigger... but it'll cause the mother of all flamebait wars so I'll keep that to myself ;)

General Discussion / Re: Has anyone made a map (or considered it)?
« on: August 04, 2007, 10:50:25 am »
Get a copy of crystal space... and load up a map.... go up in the sky.. take a screeny and make your own. ;)

If you're mapping out somewhere that has different zone/regions (such as the arena)... take note of the coords and region names... and screen shot each region from the same position. (You can then build those awkward areas into maps by overlaying the screenies).

Of course... these types of maps are brutally OOC because ariel photography doesn't exist in Yliakum... but if you're wanting to make spoiler-maps for your own guild... this is how I did it ;)

General Discussion / Re: Planeshift.. boring??
« on: August 04, 2007, 10:47:38 am »
I don't think the PS community want to see more guildwars and conflict (at least, it seems that way!)...

With the sewing-circle crowd coming up with suggestions of "remove PvP completely" ... you're never likely to see the action you're asking for.

PvP,PK and Thieving / PvP-Blocked Zones
« on: August 04, 2007, 10:30:16 am »
For areas where PvP is going to cause an uproar (such as the plaza), just make it impossible for people to attack each other.  (You could do it on challenges but it won't stop a guild war.. so just disable attacks completely.)

This would stop people fighting there... which in turn would stop the petty overreactions.. which would stop people berating each other and having petty arguments about IC/OOC.

It would also mean GMs wouldn't need to kill players who are warring there as that wouldn't even be possible.

So there it is... Make PvP literally impossible on the plaza and anywhere else where it's deemed ICly inappropriate.

"Oh but Drah... people should still be able to kill, etc. for RP purposes as long as they RP the results properly.. and have to hide outside of town"

Yeah, but many will still fight and not be bothered... and if you're going to RP the results properly, you can RP the killing/murder/crime and just have the victim use /die. --- So you might as well block PvP there to save you having arguments in future when other players come along and their actions don't fit in with the settings.

Wish list / Item movement ergonomics
« on: August 01, 2007, 06:41:37 pm »
Hope this hasn't already been posted, if it has, apologies in advance... just with Vengeance working on inventory.. I thought it was worth mentioning...

I notice when I'm smelting gold and making ingots, there's a lot of clicking involved, even just to select quantities, which in many cases is a single ore (for making an ingot).

It'd make things easier if ctrl+click picked up one item from the stack and shift+click picked up all... with both bypassing the quantity window.

It may not sound like much but when you add up all the clicks and all the mouse-movements to move to the slider accurately, etc... it equates to a lot of unnecessary clicking and cognitive processing.

Just a thought.

The Hydlaa Plaza / Re: Anyone know of any alternatives to planeshift?

If you like roleplay more than gameplay... you can't beat Planeshift. ;)

General Discussion / Re: Fighting on Plaza ALWAYS OOC???
« on: July 25, 2007, 04:02:24 am »
"Ignoring the fact that there are guards, independant of the count, is OOC."

a) Imagining an **infinite** number of guards that can't be seen... is IC??
b) Thinking there's a limit to which the guards would be able to operate effectively... is OOC??

"Taking it as IC that they (those who can be seen) won't do anything is even worse."

a) Imagining that the 4 or 5 guards who would have been able to see this would have ran in to take on 30+ people is IC??
b) Imagining that the handful of guards would want to wait for reinforcements or wait until the warring guilds had injured each other enough to be easily apprehended... is OOC??

---

As for ignoring the guards, well, for me, I'd have explained to the guards exactly what happened.  After all, I was getting shot in the back with arrows as I was making my way to the arena ... had I not retaliated.. I'd have probably been killed.

And I'm sure it will be, in some people's opinions... OOC for me to expect the guards not to recognize me despite wearing different clothes and that I had a battle helm obscuring my face on the day in question... furthermore, I'm sure some people will try to claim that this is "OOC" that I don't imagine that they can see my face from the other size of plaza and also "OOC" if I don't imagine them having photographic memory. ;)

Maybe Jayose can be the gatekeeper for publicly available literature... so that if you want him to include a book in his library you'd have to run it by him (aka the settings team) through some sort of mechanism.

As for books not in the library, many civilisations have had banned books yet those books still existed, traded by those who had a desire to seek forbidden knowledge... so in that sense.. outside the library I think a free-press is something that's almost unavoidable.

General Discussion / Tweaking For Better Performance?
« on: July 18, 2007, 07:36:15 am »
What property do both (but only) the winch map and the bronze-doors region maps have in common?

On the 3 different computers that I've played PS on (all with different nvidia cards) whenever an in-game-hour passes the game staggers briefly every second for about 20-30 seconds (as the lighting changes according to time) and only seems apparent on these particular maps.

Are there any tweaks that can fix this? (besides the options in pssetup as no amount of tweaking there seems to help much)

---

Also, the new shadows seem to be slaying the framerate for me... is there any way of disabling them and/or disabling speech bubbles easily?

---

Thanks.

General Discussion / Re: Fighting on Plaza ALWAYS OOC???
« on: July 16, 2007, 02:16:16 am »
There were already existing tensions because of an ongoing grudge between guild-#1 leader and a senior member of  guild-#2.

At an auction not long before the war there was some confusion on behalf of a senior member (not the one with the grudge initially) of guild-#2, a member from guild-#1 developed an attitude and started being extremely rude to the guild-#2 member.  guild-#2 member responded that there was no need for that kind of attitude or rudeness, guild-#1 member became even more aggressive, guild-#2 member became aggressive...

Guild-#1 member felt guild-#2 member was an idiot... guild-#2 member felt he'd been greatly dishonored because of the insults... and so they agreed to meet for a fight.

Guild-#2 member turned up at the agreed place only to find that the entire Guild-#1 had turned up... seemingly neither side trusted the other to turn up alone as some of Guild-#2 had come along too.

After guild-#1's member was disposed of... guild-#1's leader confronted guild-#2's member... and with the existing tensions... the arguments soon escalated from individual-vs-individual into guild-vs.-guild.

War was declared, guild-#2 received intel that guild-#1 was calling on their former guild for assistance and so guild-#2 called upon their allies.

Then... there were 2 guilds at war with another 2 guilds.

I can't post logs as the person directly involved in the initial argument had lost the logs when they uninstalled .018... but at least you know the story now... and yes, I've kept it vague on purpose as my intent for this thread was more for posing a hypothetical question.

If you want more details I'd suggest you go and ask those who were involved, in-character. :)

General Discussion / Velocity-changing Magic
« on: July 15, 2007, 02:02:31 am »
Haste/Jump spells/potions/enchantments, etc...

This is not a wish or a suggestion, just a request to know what the path ahead holds.

I'm just wanting to know if this type of magic effect has been ruled out of the game by Talad and/or the devs/settings-team... or... if there are any plans for spells/potions/etc. that can temporarily change velocities (for either running or jumping) in the future?

Thanks.
