Technical Help: Problems BEFORE entering the game /
« on: July 19, 2003, 02:31:38 pm »
Actually I have a 1800XP+ myself, 1GB RAM a radeon 8500 (i think it is a 64 won\'t be bothered to check for the moment). right after I installed it worked great, now i can\'t move anymore. I can login ,talk if i can accept the 30/60 sec lag between typing and seeing the message appear in the chat box, I can about move the view if i use mouselook, but my char is stuck, spawn command not working.

I use opengl mode on both linux and window, I update the windows version before each run, the linux one every 3 runs (because the sf cvs is so freaking slow at the moment) none of it helps

Most games work pretty well so i don\'t think it has to do about the drivers . using either top (linux) or the equivalent on windows (can\'t remember the name rght now) I see the game uses about 380MB of ram (not a problem considering i have 1000) however as soon as i run it my cpu is used at 100% sometimes going down as far as 97% but never below.

I guess it is the config file editor
(just a guess)

if so have you run the game once first ?
I am no expert but maybe the game generates the default config on first run only (can\'t check since i am on linux right now with work to do...so can\'t reboot).

I just love these flame wars :)

(btw I own a radeon 8500, and was pretty happy to own a Geforce1 DDr before that)

The golden rule says :

\"There is no better company, there are only better cards\"

stop fighting over ati and nvidia, just compare the cards :)

considering there are no sym[something].dll files in plaeshift
I would say that you windows is badly bloated or you don\'t have enough RAM to make planeshift run

what are your computer specs ?
how much virtual memory did you give to windows ?

(on XP : right click on my computer, go to properties, then go to the advanced tab, there click the setting button in the performance box, go to the advanced tab again in the newly opened window, and theree in the bottom box (Virtual memory) you should have informations about your page file size and a button to change it if it is too low)

edit : actually mogura has a thread that details how to change your swap/virtual memory/pagefile settings here

oups sorry if it was, I must confess i didn\'t check , if it is then i respectefully ask that such a commandable initiative as this one be stickied until the competition is won by someone.
So as to give it the best possible coverage.

now i go back in game trying to get crystals to help make more quests and competitions available

Hmm the problem is that pas a certain number of players the bandwidth cost, elctricity and hardware maintenance cost  might become a problem, I am not sure a one time fee could be enough to cover all these.

But if i understand correctly the server is sponsored by fragnetics, and is hosting not only planeshift but also FPS (as in CS, Q3 ...) servers, so they presumably have a respectable bandwidth available. How they get it though is another question :)

(btw I also prefer if it is free, and could go with a one time payment )

I run both linux and Xp with linux my default boot option
I return on XP to be able to read some MSOffice files my school keeps sending me (open office reads most of the files but some xls files and powerpoint files with layouts will sometime suck big time so )
and also sometimes for gaming

as for PS i play under both linux and windows since, sometimes, getting stuck under one OS, I can unstuck from the other.

I must also mention that PS playability is better with win32 than with linux (for me at leat). Both in frame rates and in behaviour. (the linux mouselook fails pretty badly on me cf technical help -> mouselooking ) and of course all this on the same comp .

most of my work however is done on linux.

I don\'t want to restart the old flame war, or anything.
But ever since I have tried knoppix and morphix, that is what i recommend to most newbs users, since  they are both cd based distro. Which means you put the CD in, boot the computer and poof you have your linux and desktop running. That is the best way i know to give someone a feel of linux. Afterward, if you want to install on your hard drive, you have an installer (both in knoppix and in morphix) wich will guide you through configuring your system to dual boot (careful though, I recommend reading a bit about partitionning first). Thay even configure your usb adsl modem for you.

My own laptop is morphix powered, I installed it on the hard drive and then since morphix is debian based, i just had to run \"apt-get update\" and \"apt-get upgrade\" to  reach the bleeding edge (well you could be bloodier with a gentoo but recompiling takes so much time :( )

you can get both isos for knoppix and morphix on the internet

page file is the win 32 swap space, also called virtual memory.
it is a file on your hard drive used to temporarily store memory states when your RAM is too small to hold all the states needed by the programs your run.

(any1 correct me if I am wrong)

Actually I have exactly the same problem on a debian sid.
I ran Acraig build.sh script to build planeshift from source. ingame mouselook is unusable, not allowing to look right or left for more than a few (<10) degrees. It works flawlessly on the same computer running windows XP pro

(mouse is a ms intellimouse explorer v2, configured correctly enough that it works fine under ennemy territory)

this is not a PlaneShift specific error
Kernel32.dll is the core of windows, planeshift may have reserved memory space it wasn\'t supposed to use and explorer then caused the page fault

reboot your computer make sure you have enough RAM and pagefile to run the game and retry it.
