Ok, so I write for planeshift and I am curious what the players would like explained. My hope is to glean a greater understanding of what you do not know, or feel must most urgently be explained. I will make no promises in relation to how fast it will be explained or if it will at all. This thread should soley be about what people who have already read the in game material feel is missing from the world that needs to be there. I will not be very happy if the players take this as a chance to argue with eachother. I do not care to hear anything negative, or hear about how much the game sucks. Only respond if you have read what is in game and have the capacity to speak well. I would like to see what you want to know more about what explainations you feel are essential. If this turns into a flame session or players critique eachother's entries I will lock the thread and be much less likely to ask this kind of thing from the players in the future. Thank you in advance for sharing your ideas.

ah, i think this would be the right place to ask but why every time i level up my strangth the ammont of damage i can do gose dwon, its gone from 50 to 5.0...
-
mufler, please keep in mind this is a request from the SETTINGS team.
What we're looking for are things you want to know about the SETTING of Yliakum.
What do you want to know about Hydlaa? Ojaveda? The Eagle Bronze Doors? The levels? The government? Anything that you're wondering about. Settings can't field questions about anything relating to fighting mobs or your stats, etc.
-
Crime and punishment explained a little please :)
-
narure that is the spirit!
-
ah i see, sorry
please exsplane crime and punishment :)
-
Also I've heard people say we aren't ment to know we are in a slaigtite but I read that a xacha came up with the theory and we aren't alowed to mine on the lower levels because of this. So which way is it?
I know I should think of everything then put it in one post rather than posting as they come.
-
What races get along the best or the worst of what we have so far?
-
What purpose do romantic entanglements serve for kran, are they even capable?
-
keep em coming folks you want answers and i want questions a good arrangement all around.
-
What happened to that thing where we could ask questions each month and they would be answered at the end of the month?
-
Could you explain what happens when you die? Not 'you go to the death realm,' but properly explain it in detail.
-
Could you explain what happens when you die? Not 'you go to the death realm,' but properly explain it in detail.
Parallo, that info is already available in game.
-
A more detailed explanation of Yliakum government(Including if it is *cough* "perfect", decent(mostly fine, but there are some crooks), average(like some RL govs) or really corrupt(like "bananas republics"), the way regions are divided - states, districts etc among other things), economy(is it mercantilist, keynesian, laissez-faire or something else? Is there lots or little poverty?) and society(I mean, more detail on aspects like religions, culture, arts and such, character creation, in one of the choices seems to imply Laanx rituals are a bit on the bizarre side, I wonder how exactly...), and whether things like "Politician Career Failed" are mistakes against the Settings, as @Seytra claimed, or not, would be a really good thing to know.
And as @Drah mentioned. Having the knowledge of how law works (besides the obvious that polluting water = death penalty) would be equally nice.
Just to pinpoint, a proofread of what is currently on Character Creation would be good as well, some of the things there are arguably contradicting of the way some people perceive the currently available information about the Settings.
-
Do the differnt levels have differnt laws? Where does the law extend to e.g. can you get away with anything in the dungeons? Pregnancy times of races is a question asked alot. Would certain races expect a strikter upbringing than others? Are cross breed familes common? Is adoption common? Considering the time period would it be more admirable to be fatter or thinner and what about skin tone?
-
Black Flame.
Even if it's largely a mystery to in-game characters, we can still choose it during the character creation process. And, if we can choose it, we should be able to know why.
Thanks.
-
This might already be answered but it is a mystery to me and I cannot find it in the Guide.
Obviously Hydlaa is on the top level. What are the climates and and settings on the other levels? How do races interact on other levels? Is it the same or could it be different? s it like different countries maybe?
Kinda random question but it goes along with Narure's :)
-
These are all good and fair questions. Please keep the questions flowing.
-
What is the life expectancy of the different races?
How does kran reproduction work?
I know both questions have been discussed a lot, but I don't believe we've had an official answer so far :)
-
i want to know how the statue in the arena that appears to be a mage with a floating ball between her hands is done... who enchanted those statues? is the effect permanent or has to be renewed? are there other such enchantments?
-
More information on religions in general would be nice.
Structure of preisthoods, holy items and magical properties thereof, how organized religion reacts to disorganized religion (eg, cults, lay-preachers, etc), celibacy of priests, religious symbolism (snakes in laanx temple, why?), mythos of religions in more 'recent' times (now we have the creation story and a 1000-mile overview, would be nice to have parables or stories of the gods in peoples lives), any prophets, holy texts in general, worship practices (singing and dancing? solemn introspection? bloody sacrafice?)
And my character is an atheist... hmm... know thy enemy :]

I would like to know more history, things like list of old octarchs and what they did, and stuff like that. Also knowing who the current octarchs are would be useful.
-
Are the occupants of the arena, aside from the trainers/merchants really complex illusions which would account for their respawning in place?
-
What is the life expectancy of the different races?
How does kran reproduction work?
I know both questions have been discussed a lot, but I don't believe we've had an official answer so far :)
We do, actually - Xillix may wish to explain them further, but there is an answer about Kran reproduction here (http://hydlaa.com/smf/index.php?topic=26652.0), and something about racial life spans here (http://hydlaa.com/smf/index.php?topic=25357.0).
Our Q&A round was paused because Talad had very little to zero time to provide the answers, or to approve those coming from the other devs. Knowing how incredibly active Xillix is, however, and now that he is Settings leader, we might be able to open the Q&A again. This might be it, actually - I might want to sticky the thread in that case :)
-
I would still like to know the official average lifespan for each of the races...last time I asked I got an answer of "there is no answer at this time." :)
-
1) What's the role of the black crystal in the death realm? Is it the counterpart of the Azure Sun? If not, is there a light crystal too? What powers/effects would they have?
And since we're talking dead,
2) What's the story behind the citadel?
And finally,
3) What's the official stand on alignments? I've read different opinions on the subject but they all come from players, mods, gms and I haven't found the official one.
-
If inter-racial marriages are fairly common, why are there no bi-racial married couple npc's ? Is that just a mistaken impression on my part?
-
If inter-racial marriages are fairly common, why are there no bi-racial married couple npc's ? Is that just a mistaken impression on my part?
You're mistaken. There are in fact THREE sets of bi-racial married couple NPCs currently in game. There might even be more because some NPCs are mentioned as married to people you can't see and whose race is not noted. But at least three.
-
Karyuu, my hope with this thread is not to answer questions, but to derrive a sense of what the players and gms and/or devs feel needs to be written. By and large much of what has been asked i question myself. I am just trying to prioritize my tasks based on the community's perceptions of PS's needs.
On the topic of the Q&A, i would be willing to aid in reviving that or having settings team answer those questions and submit to talad.
This thread is more intended to see what books or other settings assets people would like to see next etc.
Zhai are you sure you have read all the books in game? There are about 6 new ones . . .
Jeraphon is a great aid, his attention to detail and engagement with story oriented game features while a player translates into a damn fine settings dev.
everyone please keep them comming.

I've been wonder about how to tell one enki clan from another. For Instance are the beige enkis from one clan and the blackish enkis from another or do they mix and match?
-
The current Enkidukai packs are divided as such:
(http://img186.imageshack.us/img186/9374/enkidukaipacksdw5.th.jpg) (http://img186.imageshack.us/my.php?image=enkidukaipacksdw5.jpg)

Is there any history of bigamy, or are all races monogamous?
Is it possible that an elder of any of the races managed to bring with them when migrating here, a detailed history of their civilization before relocation?
Can we expect to see the histories that you and Kixie created integrated into the settings any time soon, or will it be part and parcel with the entire Adraax city, when and if accepted?
Is there any historical significance to the Volcano style formation? Has it always been there, or was it created by one of the gods in some sort of situation of conflict?
Is there a more detailed explanation of the ruins?
-
the pantheon. we only have three gods, and not much else...
not sure if it has been mentioned but, landmark history of yliakium. any school kid can rhyme off major u.s. history, more so if they aren't american ;D.

What does that mean really? Different characteristics for different tribes? Different habits? etc. If so, what's different for each of those 3 tribes (I think those are the tribes...)
-
This might have been already asked but I havn't found the awnser...
What determins wether someone will get a Groffel, Bagga, or Yulbar after obtaining a ring of familiar?
Also,
Do Kran, have anything similar to blood inside them?
Are the holes in Yliakum (which are used of disposing of the dead) man-made or natural formations?
Where is the Black Flame now?
Ynwnn are a cross between Dermorian and Diaboli, yet I have never seen or heard of any couples of dermorian or diaboli, computer or human couples... Why is Ynwnn such a promonant race if technically there are almost no Diaboli/Dermorian couples?
Is that hole Greogri is standing on a pit for disposing of corpses in the arena?
Will it ever be possible to be able to use magic without help of an item like a glyph?
Do Clackers live in colonies like Trepor? Or are they solitary creatures?
and thats all. :)
-
Where does the rain come from?
Does it condense into clouds below the "ceiling wall"?
or
Does it condense ON the "ceiling wall" then drip down?
How far above the top level is the ceiling and Azure Sun?
What kinds of woods are in planeshift, how dense are they?
You should put a bulletin board in hydlaa plaza somewhere visible from the center statue.
It should have SOME quests posted by NPCs that they want done. Then players can see the list of NPCs who offer quests and other information related to the posts that they make. Then the players can goto the NPC and accept the quest they want from the bulletin board. Having the bulletin board visible from the center plaza will let New Players find it more easily, because it's near a landmark.

tell me please these questions are not the limit of thousands of player's imaginations . . .
-
tell me please these questions are not the limit of thousands of player's imaginations . . .
Nope, many players don't access these forums. But I'll try to fix it, to a extent...
Anyway, if there's nothing wrong on a making a new post with more questions, here they are:
I know it's a far future question as it's Coming Soontm, but even though, it would be good to see more about the psionics(Lah'ar, Argan and Esteria) on the Settings material. Is it a special skill few people are born with in Yliakum(ESPs) or can anyone develop it? What makes it different from magic? Perhaps a short Talad's approved history about a practicioner of either of these three skills would help to explain it as well.
Other interesting thing to go about is the elements of settings involving underwater cities and their inhabitants.
And as my last suggestion on an area for the Settings:
There is mention of semi-sentient beings on the Stone Labyrinths that supposedly Diaboli are quite acquainted with in Character Creation, what is this relaiton of Diaboli with these beings and who are they also is another point.

I think a general summary of the most important mysteries to us players is the following list:
- Law and penal system = Which laws we have and how they are upheld exactly?
- Death = The Death Realm knows a lot of contradiction .. from one side we end up down there in full gear so you could believe our actual physical bodies are brought there. But on the other side the settings proclaim that dead bodies are dumped down the burial wells.
- Governement = A lot of basic information is already in the settings but knowing how our daily lives are involved with the governement could clear up a lot of issues. Questions like whether we pay taxes or have a say in the formation of new laws, etc.
- Races = more details about lifespan, general conditions, ability to get ill, prefered nutrition , prefered climate, etc.
-
Lah'ar, Argan and Esteria? I thought they were languages hehheheh
-

I have already stated that this information is explained - in detail - in game already. PLEASE, folks, READ THE MATERIAL before asking questions. Jayose isn't the only source of reading material, folks.
-
An interview with 50 experienced (german) players brought following priority as result:
- All Races should have an own modell
- More items to use (e.g. a magic stick)
- Something like containers (instead of using Krans :))
- Guild halls / Houses (e.g. for closed RP)
- More Skills (like alchemie, axe making
I hope this helps
-
Gods - Who are these other Gods besides Laanx, Talad, and Vodul, and what part do they play in the world of Yliakum? An explanation of that would be nice.
-

I just read about this. Guess that solves that problem. :D

No.
It doesn't help.
At all.
This has zero to do with settings. This list would get rejected from the wishlist, let alone a thread asking for QUESTIONS about SETTINGS. I don't think we can be any clearer about the objectives of this thread.
-
I guess this is somthing that the settings department will be able to convey quickest. What other monsters are there in yilakum, i know more will come with time but we could hear about them first.
-
what kind of rituals exactly do laanx preists go through (important for vespers)
what morals (if any) are laanx followers expected to uphold?
According to laanx followers, what is the purpose of life?
Same questions go for talad followers...
What kind of venoms exist in yliakum, and while we're at it, what kinds of herbs exist. (important for alchemists and chemists in ps)
Kinda goes along with zan's idea, but a list of known dieseases sure would help for accurate rp.
Mining on any layer bellow the first layer is illegal for fear of making a hole in the salagtight, right? So whats the punishment for illegal mining opperations on the lower levels?
-
Going on from what Earl_Listbard said about venoms and herbs. I'd like to know what the medical knowledge is like in Yliakum and whether there are doctors and chemists. Obviously there are alchemists but that is in a more magical sense.
What is the understanding of science so far?
And what values does each god convey. For instance if I was a devout Talad follower, what values would base my life on.
Are there seasons in Yliakum?
Are there any special days of celebration or mourning. Anniversaries of historical events?
Are there any sports played in Yliakum? Maybe a general sport, or several sports that are traditionally played by each race.
I hope this helps
EDIT: Also, if you really want imaginitive specific ideas:
What are the main exports of each city?
How does the weather vary in different parts of Yliakum?
What do races think of their own and each others cities. (eg. Do the dwarfs like Hydlaa? If not why not?)
What habitat and conditions does each creature need to be in to survive?
Do different races need different conditions to survive?
Who owns the various cities? A mayor like figure?
-
I was just wondering about the Xacha's ancient knowledge. Since we are in a medieval time period, is this ancient knowledge similar to ancient Greek and Egyptian knowledge vs. medieval scientist’s knowledge? How much did the Xacha know? How much did this ancient knowledge spread though Yliakum? I am assuming that this ancient knowledge stayed with the Xacha because the other races didn’t use this mineral in their architecture. We know Xacha had an ancient knowledge of master iron working (large flat panels of iron, iron rivets) and is still reflected in their architecture today. Would there have been large mills/factories to pound out all of this metal into large sheets? Would these mill/factories been in their ancient knowledge? If large mills weren’t used, were masses of people used? If large mills were used, where are they today?
Where did all of this iron come from? Surely there can’t be that much iron just laying around on the top soil? Were/are/will be ore MINES sunk into the ground?
Have the races agreed upon nurturing Yliakum because they know there is a finite world? Or do they have a mind set of “god will provide” and “god will keep providing”?
Are/will there be VAST stretches of land between cities? Where one way trip to that city would be a 4 or so Yliakum day journey? If so, this might lead to “boom” towns of just people. I think it might be nice, but maybe just me. But as stated in the history, some races have tried to “own” all the land and push others out. Does this mean that they own it because they are populous, or just because they wanted to own it?
Is wood becoming scarce in Yliakum? I sure hope not, because if so, then whole cultures will be wiped out due to the lack of this natural resource. I know foresting hasn’t been implemented yet, so there is no need for forests yet, but my question lies in the idea of “will the citizens of Yliakum have to worry about conservation?”
That’s all for now, need sleep.
*edit*
I have another question. Is the government highly involved with the religion? Does religion run most of the population’s believes/customs/ideas? Is “Cause the Gods probably made it this way” a final answer to most questions? Is free thinking encouraged or looked down upon if it offends the religious people, or the “gods” themselves? Is scientific theory encouraged as a mean of explanation of things in Yliakum, or is the population suppose to rely upon religion for their answers?
[ Please avoid making one post right after the other in the same thread. Just "Modify" your first post to add more information. --Karyuu ]

I apologize if someone has asked this before, but... What exactly is going on that required most of Ojaveda to be quarantined? It doesn't seem to be really explained well enough.
-
Do we have vulcanos magma lava underground lakes of fire and such?
-
What is mana? How does it work?
-
Is the dark ground texture such as where the Dark Wanderer stands supposed to be swamp, metamorphic rock, a molten lava field or something else.?
-
What is the name of the current ochtarch(sp?) for the level of yliakum in which we currently all exist?

Few religion based questions:
What is the incidence as far as cults and the like? Noting the fanatics down in the sewers (who seem so intent on sacrificing me), what would be the incidence of secret cults (Illuminati, anyone? :P), secret societies, or more wide open groups starting up new religion like things based on gods other then Talad, Laanx and Vodul? What would the average person know about Vodul, is he commonly worshiped as a sort of overlord god or just ignored?
What, exactly, are the followers of Laanx and Talad's views on Vodul (if they know of him)? What, exactly, is the Book of Names: a book of rules? a history? something in between, like the Bible? a set of parables, such as Aesop's Fables, except with a more religious meaning? What do Laanx and Talad require of their clergy: Chastity? Strict daily prayer? Self mutilation? etc.
Does Planeshift have anything comparative to dnd Paladins: knights who fight in a God's name? In other words, is it with or against the settings to roleplay one?
Few government questions:
What is the crime rate (as far as murders in towns, organized crime, trafficking in illegal goods, etc.)? Does the government commonly have officials who are corrupt? Does it often have crazy officials (for instance, ones who are paranoid to the point of having others killed, ones who will do things like make their Magaras their chief adviser, etc.)? What exactly are the various position's powers (in respect to control over the guard, ability to legally put down dissent, etc.)? Is speaking out against the government punishable by military action? Will the average guard take a bribe if nobody is looking?
And last but not least: Is it a punishable crime to insult or verbally harass the guard when they ask you to help them? If so, what is the punishment? Could they punish you even if it wasn't a crime that was on the books?
-
what would be the incidence of secret cults (Illuminati, anyone? :P), secret societies, or more wide open groups starting up new religion like things based on gods other then Talad, Laanx and Vodul?
About the first question: FNORD
Seriously, the "secrecy" toggle on guild creation and some creativity from the side of the community will answer to that, but you won't find much answers on the guild forums as separating IC from OOC secrecy is not easy(But I think there's no "secret world power" in Yliakum, although that does not mean there aren't "conspiracy theorists" ::). ). For the second, same thing, you could make "guilds" to be entirely as new religions or mystical views. I think that the Enlightened are an example of it.
Now about what already exists on the Settings. Besides that nature cult leaded by a NPC that is in the *spoiler* and the "dark circle", I don't know. But I suppose it may be common, although not easy to perceive(a good thing as they are supposed to be more or less secret)
-
I read this topic every day and there are works in progress to answer some of this so do not feel neglected. If someone asks something settings has already answered you are welcome to give them their answer but i would vastly prefer this thread to be dictacted by people who know a lot or all there is to know about the settings through the game. Thanks again everyone.
-
I dont supose some things will be answered in more acessible ways than ingame. Just with the NPC's speach being what it is and all :-[.

They might be answered in books as well as npc speach you never know what the setting devs might come up with next

Perhaps some extra explanations on magic? How does the purifying work, why can you only bond to one glyph of the same kind. Is it inhibited for multiple persons to bond to one glyph? How do staves work together with glyphs?

What are those odd holes that make some large rocks in Bronze Doors area appear a bit like swiss cheese? Are they made by nesting birds? Avid climbers?
What's that odd upper tunnel for? The one in BronzeDoors that forks right, and overlooks the pool...it continues and appears to have a deliberately formed step. Was this an area for sacrifice? I see no machine works for lowering ore or other goods...

Seeing as how it overlooks the ramp to the fortress I'd say it is for spying on troop movements as well as surreptitiously moving people and goods. I'd like to know what is behind the door in the storeroom on the way to petri-Kran.

Who is the leader of the "Hydlaa axemen" and what is their history with the "armies of death". What is the war that has been going on for 15 years between them. Is there a way to get Amidison to speak of these things? Perhaps I should ask around more, I admit I have not talked to many of the npc's about this. Asking Amidison about the unit was met with the generic Hydlaa response, perhaps there is nothing more currently available or I have yet to stumble upon the proper npc/key phrase.

Excellent question, I've always wondered about that one .. seemed to be a storyline that got cut off for the time being and perhaps forgotten.

Where does all the sewer water come from and goto?
Does the city have indoor plumping? Toliets?\\

The temple is made of iron.
-
Are there stars in Yliakum? As it's supposed to be inside a stalactite, there can't be 'real' stars, but there could be small pieces of light-reflecting crystal in the ceiling or something so that it looks like stars. As the peoples originally came from the surface, they would have called them 'stars' due to the similar appearance.
I like that idea :innocent:
-
What does the big book of names pertain to?
Read the History. (http://www.planeshift.it/history.html)
What are/is the strange mist (particules) within the laanx temple?
Ever tried right clicking on those particles near to Sharven?
Is the laanx temple made from special stone, since its color doesnt match any kind of rock found near hyldaa?
Like they said .. it's the Iron Temple of Laanx. It is made of iron that has rusted over the ages, giving a rusty red/brown color.
Where is Kada-El?
Sadly no longer with us. (She was actually a player that left Planeshift quite a while ago.)
-
Just under the shoulders they have two big wings that appear to be weak and non-functional. The skeleton is thin and flexible to flight easier, but is easily damaged. Thanks to their body structure, the Klyros are fast in all three elements: air, water and earth.
Are Klyros wings functional or not? This seems to be a bit contradictory or at least confusing.
-
The Klyros are good gliders, but not fliers - they are not capable of pushing themselves off of the ground, but falling from heights would see them swoop easily through the air. They would still soar in a downward direction and it would only help stall the landing - but they will land.

Theoretically, if they find some good updrafts, they could significantly extend how long they stay in the air...

I know she was a player, but that doesnt give a IC reason for her not being ingame. :P

"sadly no longer with us" Usually means "Dead" only in a nicer way said ;)

is it safe to asume the chemical make up of things in ps is simular to those in real life?
would it be ooc to rp your charicter useing the lightning glyph to break chemical bonds?
how are we presenting alchemy in ps, the more real, peddleing with chemicals and accedental discoverys, or the mistical, magic potion and metals kind of alchemy?
can you type up a little more detailed discription of abilitys in Lah'ar and the other magic schools?
and are these schools simply combenations of magic ways, or modifications on how a person manipulates mana?
all i can think of right now, ill come back when my mind is not so blank. ^^
-
Certain manifestations of Laanx are able to tap the energy of the crystal directly, but this method is not possible to humans because they will be destroyed in the process.
Does this mean Laanx has made appearances like Talad as different races and such?

@ mufler:
Search for pictures of the levels again! The azure crystal is connected to the surface above the cave, light shines through the crystal into the stalagtite.
Some outdated information (IMHO, Yliakum is not a "city", but the whole "world" inside the stalagtite):
http://www.planeshift.it/guide/en/setting-overview.html (http://www.planeshift.it/guide/en/setting-overview.html)
Unfortunately, it does not contain the coarse cut through the whole cave I once saw somewhere.

oh nice ok. ty for the help.

The realm is like one of those kiddie ring pyramids (http://www.fisher-price.com/img/product_shots/71050_b_2.jpg?1178553389951) stacked upside down with the base and pole removed. Each level is a different ring.

I'd like to know just how catlike are Enkis? Do they have paws or hands? (more so how enkis think of them than how they actually are) Do they have kits, cubs, babies, or ect. Do they primarily have single births or a litter? Can they purr? Is it common for Enkis to lick each other like cats do?
Just curious... :) but that's all. :-X
-
Some of this I can answer myself:
They have hands. Paws are those things with pads (what I have in my sig). It's what quadruped animals have. Generally if it's not a foot, it cannot be a paw. According to common sense, and the settings page: "They have small, slitted eyes, their limbs are long and lean and taper into clawed hands and feet.", Enkidukai also have hands ;)
Yes, they do purr. In fact, purring found its way into their language.
-
Well, not quite from the settings, but from the roleplays and the development of the Enkidukai language "Enkien" (http://pswiki.xordan.com/index.php/Enkidukai_Language)
Do they have paws or hands? (more so how enkis think of them than how they actually are) - The 3D models have distinct fingers on the hands, but the feet look quite peculiar.
Do they have kits, cubs, babies, or ect. Do they primarily have single births or a litter? - In roleplays they often have more than one, like 2-4.
Can they purr? - According to the Enkien vocabulary -- definitely!
Is it common for Enkis to lick each other like cats do? -- Leroner does. Royals won't. May depend on the standard of living and the raising...
-
Do they have kits, cubs, babies, or ect. Do they primarily have single births or a litter? - In roleplays they often have more than one, like 2-4.
Hah, that explains the Enkidukai overpopulation. In role-play consider Enkidukai have human-like bodies and style of living. They don't need nor would be able to support litters :P
-
Enkidukai have hands but refer to them as paws.
A baby enkidukai is called a cub.
I believe they do purr but am not sure.
There is nothing in settings that says they lick each other. I think that's going just a bit too far myself, especially considering the connotations the word "lick" has.
Information on gestation will be coming in game soon, where the topic of multiple births for enkidukai is covered.

Thank you Jeraphon! \\o// Sorry Draklar and LigH but this is the info I was actually looking for.

back on track here, any new requests folks?
-
Who is the lady carved into that "passageway" between ojaroads? Who is the man?
Did the "DR-Buddies" build those funky bridges, or were they already there?
Why are there pipes in the funky bridges?
What's that scary looking face on the tube-thing in the DR library?
What are the various race's interpretations of the Klyros's appearance? Do they think it's scary, cool, ugly, beautiful, or boring?
Is it just me, or is there a lack of Klyros NPCs? If so, is it intentional? Are they minorities in Hydlaa?
Do Klyros smell funny? Distinctive? Same goes for all the other races. The Kran might smell flinty or something.
Are there people allergic to Enkidukai fur?
Do Kran have varying "compositions" (as in, some are more more granite-like, others are more quartz-like etc)?
Do Krans crack, chip, and shatter, or are they just really tough but flesh-like?
How much heat can they take? Do they melt?
More information about weather would be nice. How it happens, to what extent it can form (I doubt there are hurricanes), patterns, average conditions, etc.
Is the rock-bridge on the ojaroad natural, or did somebody/something place it?
Why do the apple trees produce so many apples!
-
Are there laws limiting/benefiting certain races, such as buildings needing to be Kran accessable?
Outside of those created by players, about how common are Laanxian Kran and Taladian Lemurs?
-
such as buildings needing to be Kran accessable.
If the floors aren't required to be able to support a Kran, then there should at least be a required notice of such on the door. Otherwise, nasty surprise! :o
More info about what people do for fun would be nice. How many people climb trees? Duel (non-lethally, like fencing)? Are there "Parkour nuts"? Pyros? Medieval mosh pits? Pterasaur jousting? Or is it a society where standing around is "in"? ::)
What would be the favored game for hunters/trappers? (I'm referring to Bambi-type game, aka food, not checkers) I assume there are more docile creatures out there to eat than a tefu.
Do chunks of the cave ceiling ever fall? How likely is it to die by falling sky?
Along with that, what about chunks of the crystal?
Are there any carnivorous plants near Hydlaa? Anywhere? How big and bad are they? (Yliakian Ulber-traps!)
What are the main supersitions? I don't mean religion-style, I mean clovers, ghosts, luck, boogiemen, etc. Any vampires (referring to the idea of vampirism, ala suck the life out of people and gain fancy abilities and immortality, not necessarily good ol' Drac)
Along with that, what are the main "big-bad mythical beasts"?
What's the curriculum for children? Does schooling differ based on race or location? Is it government mandated or regulated? For how long does it last?
What styles of music are there? Don't give me any of that "medieval" crap either. That's like saying I listen to modern music. Out of "modern" music, I listen to at least seven distinct genres, each of which has a good bit of variation within it. So what I'm looking for is descriptions or examples (or even just IC names) of what the "punks" listen to, of what would play at a formal wedding, etc. And there's going to be variations based on race too. What do Kran like? Klyros? .....I believe I can fly.... ;D
How good is each race's average vision? I know the races page has crude "they see good" type things. I'm looking for stuff like reading a sign at twenty feet, or trying to read something up close (far-sighted). And those same specs for in the dark. Has anyone come up with spectacles yet? If so, how many people use them?
How do the different races connotate colors? Like, we US-ians associate white with marriage and black with death, but some cultures have the opposite view. Are there any of the idiotic "since you say white=good and black=evil, you're RACIST!!" people?
How often do people mistake a motionless Kran for a boulder?
How softly can a Kran walk? Are they agile enough to jump without cracking things?
How high does a Klyros have to be to turn a fall into a usable glide? Or can they jump forward fast enough to go immediately into glide-mode?
About how much weight can the average Klyros carry before gliding becomes difficult?
How rowdy are the kids of various races, or does it depend more on location? Are they often pranksters? If so, elaborate.
What's the non-scholastic literature like? Fantasy, sci-fi, romance, mystery? Which is the "in" genre? What are the predominant styles (verbose, terse, rythmic, plain, descriptive, non-revealing?)
-
My opinions:
Do chunks of the cave ceiling ever fall? How likely is it to die by falling sky?
Along with that, what about chunks of the crystal?
You can see dropped "inner stalagtites" everywhere in the landscape... And I would not be surprised if they brought pieces of the Crystal with them.
What's the curriculum for children? Does schooling differ based on race or location? Is it government mandated or regulated? For how long does it last?
This question is surely close related to the lifespans of the races.
About how much weight can the average Klyros carry before gliding becomes difficult?
They will not be able to wear "heavy armor" ... but if weight restrictions about the gliding are the reason, or because their wings are hard to protect or make it hard to wear them, is not clear to me.
-
To glide klyros need a very light structure, so their bones are very thin/hollow so heavy armour could damage them.
-
Could a Kran also eat only "normal" food instead of rocks, or would they lack the minerals if they only eat bread and sausages? How good can the Kran metabolism use such food? would it cause even trouble to eat such stuff, or is it perfectly ok for them (I only read they eat seaweed because of the salts in it)?
-
What kind of artisan built the winch, is magic on that scale hooked up somehow with the 6 ways and if so which ways are associated with which functionalities of the winch and how are they associated? Are there plans for that kind of magic to become available to the players or are the origins lost in time and are relics of past ages?

AH :) got some..
Some background information on the Steel Bazaar would be nice.
Some sitistics of deaths from the plauge in oja.
With the recent explosion of crafting, why hasnt trasok opened the Steel Bazaar?
What is the point of the faces carved out of rock out in the oja road?
Who carved them/it?
Why do merchants(npcs) know about Pizza and Spam?
Is there a book on the differnt plants in the world? (grasses, trees, herbs... so on)
Are yluber and groffels all from another diemension/world? Why arnt there any wild/escaped pets?
Do ylubers grow up to become Ulbers?
What is an average temp for each season?
Where does the sewer run off go?
and why isnt the water refiltered (if runs into a hole*)
(if it IS refiltered) where is it? and where does it come out from?
What are some dieses that frequent the citys?
Do they change from city to city, person to person as far as affects and cures?
(not sure is i already asked this) Is the plauge still a problem in Oja? if not why are the gates still closed leading to another area? *besides lack of game area made ;) )
Of so, what are some measures being taken to cure the populace of it? (besides waiting it out and praying)
Some information on the oja plauge would be nice, maybe a new book in the library? Detailing when it started, the sytoms, the affects (other then death)
Some medical data on the differnt races would be nice, which ones are more immune to which types of allments, life expentency (male and female to).
(holy cow...! :) enjoy.. i will come back when i think of more. (if any of the above were asked/answered/ingame do send me a pm plz)

(Some background information on the Steel Bazaar would be nice.)
Have you asked Trasok about it? Have you asked ANYONE in Ojaveda about it?
(Some sitistics of deaths from the plauge in oja.)
Considering it's all under quarantine, I'm afraid no statistics on casualties would emerge until after the doors are opened.
(With the recent explosion of crafting, why hasnt trasok opened the Steel Bazaar?)
That info's in game.
(What is the point of the faces carved out of rock out in the oja road?)
They're burial wells.
(Who carved them/it?)
Answered in game.
(Why do merchants(npcs) know about Pizza and Spam?)
Why are you asking NPCs about pizza and spam, but not about the Steel Bazaar?
(Is there a book on the differnt plants in the world? (grasses, trees, herbs... so on))
No, not yet.
(Are yluber and groffels all from another diemension/world?)
Answered in game.
(Do ylubers grow up to become Ulbers?)
Considering their names are "yulbar" and "ulbernaut", I'll let you figure that out.
(What is an average temp for each season?)
Good question. Submit it for the monthly Q&A.
(Where does the sewer run off go?)
That one too.
(What are some dieses that frequent the citys?)
Soon.
(Is the plauge still a problem in Oja?)
Answered in game.

Not all that information is available in game, but some of it is.

Have you asked Trasok about it? Have you asked ANYONE in Ojaveda about it?
[I did and he said "If your going to say something.. blah blaH blah]
Considering it's all under quarantine, I'm afraid no statistics on casualties would emerge until after the doors are opened.
{not true as thinking logicly you could have passed ona peice of paper saying 50 died today.. and then added up. And a certain quest sends an npc ThRU the quintine zones}
That info's in game.
{I konw why it was closed to begin with, lack of crafters due to the plage in oja, however, as far as my research into the matter has lead me, i havnt found out why its not reopened ]
Why are you asking NPCs about pizza and spam, but not about the Steel Bazaar?
[I did, and its a q. Dont have to get rude with me just cus your a WTB. It still doesnt answer WHY the freaking NPC's know about Spam and Pizza if they are SPOSE to be IC and with the settings!}
(Is there a book on the differnt plants in the world? (grasses, trees, herbs... so on))
No, not yet.
Answered in game.
[I know the settings but the point of the q was to bring up weither or not any escaped from their masters, or just found thier way here. and then started a populace.. so its litterly ALL ]
Considering their names are "yulbar" and "ulbernaut", I'll let you figure that out.
{Again with the rude/snudy remarks. You never know, and since they are pets, it would only lead to be asked, that if you raise your Yulber would you end up growing an Ulber to command. THAT was the point of the Q.]
Good question. Submit it for the monthly Q&A.
{Its here, and i posted it here since it was asked by the settings team.]
That one too.
Same.
Answered in game.
[By the doors in game it would say yes, though why its so big a problem still with all the magic and healing about is beyound me. The point was to ask basicly if its still as BIG a problem or if the Populace are starting to cure it. work for you?]
Not all that information is available in game, but some of it is.
[Then the rest of it should be looked into /thought up and added into the games settings as its part of the games IC history aint it.]
-
Alright, apparently my answers weren't satisfying enough, so here we go.
Why is the plague still a problem? Because the other Dsars haven't been created yet.
Why has Trasok still closed the Steel Bazaar? Because it hasn't been created yet.
Why is there no information on casualties? Because it's uncertain as to how long it'll take before the other Dsars are created, and if we start giving casualty rates, it might be that we'll have wiped out the entire populace.
As for yulBAR and ulBERnaut, I fail to see why you continue to bring this up, having "known" about the settings. Have you read "This Sounds Familiar?" The answer is no, yulBARS - an extremely small, hairless, quadrupedal creature with four paws - have zero to do with ulBERnauts - an extremely large, hairy, bipedal creature with two massive claws. Do dogs turn into frogs? Do rats turn into bats?
Why did I ask you to submit it to the monthly Q&A? Because those are questions so large, not even settings can give you the answers to them. Only Talad can. So submit it to the monthly Q&A. Because honestly I'd like to know too.
As for Pizza and Spam, that's not a settings issue. That's a parser issue. Ask Vengeance.
Symptoms and effects of the plague? Yeah, I guess we can work on that.
You're welcome.

How reliable are the facts mentioned in books?
Who wrote them?
Is everyone "forced" to believe what is said by a merchant or a book?
I.E.: Can chars imagine other causes and beliefs that are not made by the settings devs without being accused to be OOC or ignorent? :)
-

Good questions. A lot of the newer books have listed authors, and as such are subject to their personal spin. Some are presenting the facts as best they know them, some are skewing the facts, some admit their personal biases. Settings is leaving it up to the player as to which is which. Is your character one to read critically and skeptically, or a type who thinks that if it's in a book it's gotta be true? For the most part, however, each book contains facts and you merely have to separate them from the opinions and spin.
For any books that don't have a listed author or group of authors, i.e. some of the earliest books, it should be assumed those are canonical, but keep in mind that in the near future settings will be working closely with Talad to update them in both a grammatical and conceptual standpoint.
Can you choose to hold different opinions without being called OOC? It really depends on a case-to-case basis. I'm inclined to say yes, unless you're saying something based on what's only implemented in the game, like "There's only one set of Bronze Doors, not seven" or "Yliakum only has one level" or "there are less than a dozen different kinds of creatures in the world."
Can you choose to hold different opinions without being called ignorant? Again, it depends, but on this one I'm inclined to say no. You have the right to disagree and others have the right to call you ignorant for doing so. :)
-
Sorry if this is slightly off topic, but can anyone tell me what exactly does the Death Guardian guard? He never moves anywhere, and he never speaks. I've greeted him, challenged him, shouted at him. Makes no difference, he does nothing.
-
you tried talking to him? he doesn't say much, but he should answer you.
-
Section XXIL of the octarch's decree in Jaoyose Library says about animals kept as pets: "Sufficient sized accommodation must be for them." I assume you can not keep a pet rat in a cage only slightly bigger than itself. Does that make criminals of wizards who have rings of familiars or can we assume the extra-dimensional space created by Levrus to house the 'pet' when it is not summoned to this realm to qualify as sufficient. Are they exempt from this legislation or is this just a really stupid quibble that doesn't bear a second thought? As a corollory to make it a little less stupid, if you tie a sack onto your pet and unsummon it will it return with the pet when it is summoned? If so and there are perishable items in the sack will they still be fresh if you do not summon your pet for weeks? In other words are the pets in stasis when not summoned? I have read Levrus' book of pets but cannot remember if this is covered.
-
you tried talking to him? he doesn't say much, but he should answer you.
(off topic.. i know.. }
He doesnt talk anymore, seems his speech scribt has been removed/lost. You can try any question..
Die, hello, where am i, what are you, give me quest, i am dead, beer, spam, pizza,.. so on.. and if im missing something.. like only 1 phrase will recite an responce, then so be it i spose.

Are there other tribes of Enkidikai than what is in the game right now. What are their customs? I learned a few things in game, but I'd like to know more.
Are there going to be any humans of color in the game? You know, different skin tones?
Edit to Add:
What is child rearing like? Is hitting a child abuse? At what age do children got to school, get jobs, etc.?
-
There are other tribes of enkidukai, yes.
The other questions we'll put in the files for future stuff to consider :)
-
what animals are certainly NOT living in yliakum, or is anything relative as the settings aren't done yet?
Also can magic be done without glyphs? If magic is in a body wouldn't it be able to get it out without a glyph?
-
Read some of the previous Q&A's, Peacer.
-
The settings states there's some "Klyros brotherhood feeling". How far does that go, and what does it include? Does this mean that any Klyros can trust any other Klyros (possibly to the point of no Klyros ever harming another), or does it merely mean things like basic guest rights (if someone knocks on your door, you are to let them in for the night, etc., but be wary since they might rob you)? Does this really extend to only Klyros and if yes, is that not considered racist (IC, and OOC)?
The Enkidukai in Ojaveda have a very distinct type of society, even for Enkidukai. How great is the extent of that in other parts of Yliakum, and what, if any, are the pecularities in other areas? Do such radically different societies exist for other races also, and if yes, where, and why? How do the other members of the race view these, and vice-versa (i.e., would an Enkidukai from Hydlaa admire, shrug off, make fun of, or loathe the Ojavedan society)? How come that this distinction was able to persist over the centuries, especially given that it's confined to Ojaveda, which sees most foreign traffic, possibly more than Hydlaa?
A few rocks that look like they're fallen stalactites can be found in the wilderness. What is the probability for that, are there any historic accounts? Is it restricted to certain areas, as noone in Hydlaa has one in their backyard? Are there any large fallen stalactites? Why do they fall?
Edit:
In the same light, what about the edges of the center hole? There is significant air traffic all around them, yet I doubt the entire hole is secured against parts breaking off, or people throwing things down. This could make for dramatical accidents. If, IIRC, the center holes of the levels decrease in diameter going downwards, then there'll be a circular region on each level that is exceptionally prone to falling stuff. How is this dealt with, and how is it percieved by the population? Are measures in place to prevent this sort of thing (like nets around the edges)? Is the poor part of the population pushed into these less secure regions? Are they "forbidden zones"?
Speaking of which, what about cargo falling off pterosaurs / megaras or even the winch? Are there "salvagers" who, possibly illegally, comb these areas for goods?
/Edit
A book says there are creatures that tunnel around and above Hydlaa. Will this not be destabilising the stalactite, and shouldn't that be of concern to a certain doomsday prophet, too?
Do people have gardens at all, or is that possible for only the most wealthy, even in smaller cities?
Why are there architectural differences still remaining, even though the population is highly mixed? Why doesn't there exist any mixed / universal ("modern") style? Don't people have fashion when it comes to architecture? Same with clothing? Were there any architectural epochs (like gothic style IRL, etc.)?
Given the distinctive racial descriptions, like the Lemur eating habits, would these be passed on to their children, even if they aren't Lemurs (if, for example, a Lemur and <other race> had children of <other race>)? Likewise, would Lemurs from less developed places not have these views, making it more location- than race-specific?
Please define "malicious" WRT Diaboli? How can they be integrated at all if they're known to be universally
malicious (especially if it's a fact, not a "mere" prejudice)? Are there any exceptions, or would RPing a genuinely nice and helpful Diaboli be against the settings?
What are the ways to express aggression / fear / etc. per race? Have they unified or changed over the centuries and if not, why not, and what about children from mixed couples, or those growing up in the (in)famous "race XYZ villages" from the CC?
October Q&A said glyphs can appear anywhere, even on animals. Can they appear on people? If yes, can they be used by them, since the Q&A stated that powerful mages usually extract the glyph to something more portable? Does extraction hurt / kill / mutilate / leave marks? How long does it take? How does it work? Can one "extract" a glyph to their own or someone elses body instead of a stone, etc.? Likewise, glyphs must obviously be able to be copied, as they're readily available to anyone, so what about copying to things other than small rocks (like to weapons or mages?)?
The O&A also states that glyphs, like other magical items, can only be destroyed by magic; how do magical items get created and powered? Do they always lose power and have to be recharged, do they constantly drain mana from the creator (losing power upon their creator's death, and weakening the creator, especially if many are made by the same person), or can there be self-powering items that last eternally and if yes, how common is that?
-
What is the civil defense systems makeup? Is there an organizational chart that might be made up and/or released? Is it possible to add unit selection to the character design process to further reinforce the concept. Are there any plans to have a new guild-like structure to tie in to this with unit exercises being run by event GMs? Will this be any more than just a settings premise and actually have resources allocated to it?
-
Alright I've a few questions so I'm gonna fire them all off at once.
1) Can the people of Yliakum do sand casting?
2) How much control do Enkis and Diaboli have over their tails? I'm going to guess they're not prehensile...
3) How deep is the dirt on each level? Is there a layer of stone under/above each layer?
4) Are there any organized sports in Yliakum?
5) Are traditional weddings done in a similar manner to traditional weddings in the real world?
6) Do Krans bleed? What color is their blood? Will it clot?
7) Can the healing spells repair tendons and ligaments instantaneously if one is well enough versed in the healing arts?
8 ) Are there hospitals in Yliakum?
9) Does the Azure Sun provide heat by it's rays i.e. setting damp clothes in the sun will dry them faster and it's cooler in the shade?
-
Alright I've a few questions so I'm gonna fire them all off at once.
1) Can the people of Yliakum do sand casting?
If you can tell me what sand casting is I can probably tell you.
2) How much control do Enkis and Diaboli have over their tails? I'm going to guess they're not prehensile...
You're right, they're not prehensile. They can sweep them from side to side, keep insects away perhaps, but when not concentrating they'll just move lazily of their own accord.
3) How deep is the dirt on each level? Is there a layer of stone under/above each layer?
The distance between levels is 5km, which is very deep by earth standards. The amount of dirt vs. stone varies by level.
4) Are there any organized sports in Yliakum?
There's fighting contests in the hydlaa arena, pterosaur fights in the pterosaur arena, rivnak racing...and likely others.
5) Are traditional weddings done in a similar manner to traditional weddings in the real world?
Coming soon.
6) Do Krans bleed? What color is their blood? Will it clot?
Krans do have some internal fluids (such as stomach acids.) We'll keep you posted about blood ;)
7) Can the healing spells repair tendons and ligaments instantaneously if one is well enough versed in the healing arts?
Yes.
8 ) Are there hospitals in Yliakum?
Temples can be considered hospitals in that they have healers. There are also barber/surgeons who can provide medical help.
9) Does the Azure Sun provide heat by it's rays i.e. setting damp clothes in the sun will dry them faster and it's cooler in the shade?
Yes.

Sand casting is a form of liquid metal fabrication. Wax is formed into the shape of your final product, then packed into a special type of sand. The mold is then heated in an oven of some sort, hardening the sand casting, and melting out the wax. Molten metal is then poured into the now empty casting. Once the metal has cooled to a certain point the sand casting is broken apart by various means, leaving a metal product in the exact shape of the original wax form.
Ehem... and no google search needed on that. ;)
-
Sand casting is a form of liquid metal fabrication. (...) Once the metal has cooled to a certain point the sand casting is broken apart by various means, leaving a metal product in the exact shape of the original wax form.
The "original form" tends to be a key that was "borrowed". Just to clear up what people usually use such a technique. ;)
Edit: How do Klyros hear, lacking ears? Also, where are their gills and the corresponding openings located (same for Nolthrir)? It might be a stretch to ask, but how does the water get circulated? Is it sucked in through the mouth or through special inlet slits (both appear IRL)?
-
That's 'lost wax' casting, actually. Sand casting is making an impression in sand (often soaked in special oils to keep it from shifting) and then gently pouring molten metal into that impression. Whatever you cast will have a flat back at the top of the casting unless you use trickier techniques. And yes, if you have sand and molten metal, ta-daa, you can do sand casting. Metals with a low melting point (like lead) can even be cast in a plaster mold, though I don't reccomend it as it's rather toxic.

I'd like to know more about the Enkidukai. Enki are a physiological hybrid of human and feline, that is bipedal.
Do they have collar bones?
How flexable is the tail? Does it aid in balance?
Do they have whiskers? If so are the whiskers sensitive to touch?
How important are the tail, fur and ears in Enki body language? Do the whiskers and ears perk forward when excited and slick back against the skull when anxious or afraid? Are there taboo areas where the skin is very sensitive to pleasant sensation where only family or close friends may touch? I know most cats dislike having tummy fur ruffled.
How sensitive are an Enki's feet? Cats are capable of feeling slight tremors that are precursors of earthquakes through paw pads. If the pads on an Enki's feet are sensitive, wearing boots would definitely prevent use of the ability, if not, shoes/boots or bare feet would be a matter of preference. And the disadvantages of bare feet in combat might outweigh the advantages of extra sensory information.
How good is Enki night-vision? What trade-offs? Are Enki partially color-blind?
How sensitive is Enki hearing? Can they pinpoint the exact distance and relative angle of prey from the sound it makes rustling in the grass? What about their sense of smell? Is it about the same as a human? Or does the longer face give more area for the nasal cavity and associated nerve endings allowing a more accurate sense of smell?
Do Enki have retractable claws or are they non-retractable like a cheetah's? Can claws function as a sub-standard dagger/knife that has lower damage than a dagger but higher than human fingernails? Am I correct in assuming that Enki will not use teeth as an additional weapon in game?
It has been mentioned that purring found it's way into Enki language, does this mean that Enki are incapable of roaring?
As the settings team creates more medical knowledge, are Enki prone to multiple births? Are twins the norm? Triplets? Quints? Is infant mortality an issue? Childhood mortality? Or is most of the population control, as mentioned somewhere in the player guide, from young adults going off to seek fame and fortune and meeting death instead? Is pregnancy dangerous for Enki females? For females of other races?
It's been mentioned several times that the setting is typical of medevil times. Are children educated? If so is it hit and miss depending on whether one or both parents are literate and able to teach the offspring? If one or both parents are able to pay a tutor? Are only the wealthy able to afford to keep a teacher for their offspring? If teaching provided for all children is it by the local priesthood or by the local government agent?
Are cubs, or whatever the official designation for Enki young is, active, with hunting involving most of the adult hunting and combat behaviours or are they closer to human children? Not that normal human kids are natural couch potatoes.
Do Enki like water, dislike water, vary by individual, by clan or by home location?
-
It's my opinion that's there's probably more information about enkidukai in game than any other race (all the other races combined?) but it never seems good enough for you. I'll get the settings wtb who's most into the enkidukai to answer these questions for you, but here's the one I know for sure:

Enkidukai mothers are most prone to multiple births, but it's not "the norm." Whereas other races are highly unlikely to have multiple brothers or sisters - "You're a twin? That's incredible!" - it's just uncommon for enkidukai. "You're a triplet? Oh, that's very interesting." Note that I said mothers - it is possible in an interracial relationship for an enkidukai mother to bear twins of the father's race, but a mother of another race is most likely to bear a single enkidukai if the father is one. Don't be bringing up genetics for this one, folks. We're not going there.

How much medical knowledge do they have in Yliakum? Do they know about germs and viruses or just use the healing properties of the crystal and crystal way to heal people?
Is there anything similar to latex or silicone in use in Yliakum?
-

Some, but not a lot. Healing isn't just for the Crystal Way, but for alchemists and herbalists as well. In addition, there are barbers who double as surgeons.
They probably wouldn't know about germs and viruses, only that someone is sick and they might know how to cure the sickness.
-
Probably some of this is in game somewhere, but anyway...
"scientists" are mentioned among the Xacha in connection with their history and religion.
Are these scientists still around?
Is this actual reliable science, crackpot nut cases or forgotten lore?
Does Xacha science generally focus on technology, archeology, botany and zoology, thaumatology (as in scientific method applied to magic), or some other field, or is it just "scientific reasoning", or hypothesis, theory, experiment, conclusion type scientific method applied to whatever?
What is the relationship between science and magic?
Is an Yliakum scientist likely to reject magical elements of a new discovery or technology?
Is an Yliakum mage/alchemist/etc. likely to reject scientific explanations of how some complex thing works?
Are there devices incorporating both high(er) technology and magic? (not computers, etc. perhaps, but let's say an autonomous golem powered by a steam engine but controlled by magic (the first steam engine that I know of was built in Greece in something-or-other BC, so if we're going for medieval, it still fits))
Exactly how advanced is science and technology in Yliakum?
Which fields are they stronger/weaker in than others?
Which fields are currently advancing fastest?
Besides Xacha being generally good scientists and mathematicians, which races are better at scientific research in which fields (besides Xacha)? For example, Kran might be expected to have an advantage in geology, while Diaboli might have an advantage in metallurgy from dealing with various molten stuff in their homeland.
What races are already more advanced in which fields or are they all about equal (share information equally)?
Are there fields in which knowledge has been lost?
What knowledge?
What evidence is there to support this?
Is this knowledge likely be reclaimed?
And repeat all above questions for magic, where appropriate...
-
That sure is a tall order and thanks for all the questions, which we'll note. But I'll answer this now:
Xachas tend to devote themselves to intellectual pursuits like math and science, and yes these scientists are still around. Their main place to study is the Xacha College in the City of Stars on the Stronghold (4th) level. Pursuits include things like technology, architecture, alchemy and physics.
Actual reliable science can be found there. There are more...eccentric scientists at the Observatorium on the Dome (1st level.) I wouldn't say "crackpot" but I'd say their applications of science run to the unusual.

What are the normal sizes for newborns of the different races, other than Kran?
Also, what races can female dwarfs comfortably give birth to, or will they only give birth to dwarfs?
-
As far as I remember ... if interrace breeding works at all, there is usually a dominant race, except for the Ynnwn case? So it's quite possible that dwarfs may not be able to have children from different races at all, or dominate.
-

No. Interrace breeding works, but there's no dominance. Except for diaboli and elf producing an ynnwn, there's an equal chance of the child being from either parent's race. Don't bring genetics into it.
Dwarves can bear children of any race with which they can breed. We can say, um....hmm...that in Yliakum the races don't grow as much in the womb, but rather grow more significantly shortly after birth. I dunno. All these minutiae about births...
-
You could just have everyone lay eggs instead
Hey, everyone's always griping about how they want Planeshift to be unique. Might as well give it to them!
-
You could just have everyone lay eggs instead
Funny you mention this.
Long story short, Talad said no.
-
Maybe you could have existing people dream of someone new who then steps out of the dream full grown. :P
-
Maybe you could have existing people dream of someone new who then steps out of the dream full grown. :P
How so?
-
This isn't talking about people being born fully-grown... it's talking about things like the sizes of the wombs of females of different races and whether they'd be able to cope with having a baby of a different race.
-
magic? ;)
after all, we dont know whether there is any magic inside the body of any of the races...
-
I just offered a novel approach to reproduction that would be unique. I do not actually expect it to be adopted. It could work like this: two (or more or less under unusual circumstances) people sleeping in proximity somehow start mystically dreaming together. In the dream a body starts to take shape and slowly forms completely. Once the body is fully formed it may attract a passing soul which takes possession of it whereupon it is expelled from the dream into the "real" world.
There is no reason why the arrival of new life has to follow anything familiar.
-
Bilbous, that's a pretty interesting idea, but no. Just... no. Then where'd the fun of it all be?
-
I vote for eggs. :D
-
how about just every time you die your evil twin is split off.
-
Some probing questions for the settings team, if they thing they should give any answers:
-What is the population of Hydlaa city?
-What is the diameter of the first level of Yliakum (and the square miles)?
-The other levels?
-How many earth-years old is civilization in Yliakum?
-How come trees in Yliakum have the interesting ability to grow right out of bricked concrete? ;D
and finally,
-Does it ever snow in Yliakum?
-
It does snow.
-
Your questions about diameters are already answered ingame. I won't tell you where, though. :flowers:
Best,
Minks
-
How many earth-years old is civilization in Yliakum?
750 years, give or take.
-
Been pointed to this thread so here goes :)
My character is somewhat involved in poisons so I would love to know how the settingsteam is thinking this will most likely work. I'm interested in particular in how poisons would be made in general and how magic would be used in this.
Alchemy mentions magical ingredients, but becuase glyphs are described as a way to use your own energy to make something happen I am wondering how you could use glyphs to create something magical. Would there be a new glyph with this ability or would existing glyphs be used?
Also I'm wondering how strict poison is forbidden. Is it allowed to use poison for hunting for example? How severe would someone be punished for being caught with a poisoned blade? How fast would something be considered a poison, seeing many substances can be both a poison or a medicin depending the ammount used or with what you mix it with.
Last a question about death not completely related. True death is said to happen if a body is damaged to a certain degree. What degree would this be and what gets healed enough during transport for the body to function again?
-
I figured true death occurs when something changes your natural state to something which cannot survive on it's own. For example: if you die of old age, or stay in the Death Realm too long, then your natural state is an old person about to die; if you go too close to the crystal, than your body is transmuted, so your natural state might be a big hunk of lead. In either case, you'd die before you completely revived, so you never show up in either Death Realm or Yliakum.
(I'm not on the settings team, so I'm talking through my hat, but it makes sense...)
-
and when consumer eat you.
Wait, each time consumer kills you, you are not perma dead.
So the setting has to come up with reason.
-
Naw ... all the critters in PS are Vegetarians! They just need your bling in their craw to help them digest ... just like chickens.
-
Well the reason I'm asking this is becuase it's mentioned that the body is transported to the deathrealm, but it's also mentioned that true death can happen from damaging the body.
But if you die useally that means that your body is damaged to a point that you can't live anymore so this would mean people are getting healed when transported to the deathrealm or they would still be dead on arival. I mean if you are poisoned and you are teleported to the deathrealm with the poison still in your blood the body will be as unable to function as before the teleporting. Same with a sword in your chest. Seeing you teleport with your belongings if your opponent doesn't get it out before you teleport you would arive with the sword still in your chest. So I'm wondering what is healed and what isn't. That is kind of a need to know kind of thing for an assasin. ;)
-
The body vanishes from the live world, and is recreated whole and uninjured in the DR with all your items, and the 'soul' is moved with it. True Death is when your body does not vanish in the live world for some reason, by it magic, special poisons, specific illness, old age, or for some reason you are one of the unlucky people who can not be transfered to the DR (there are many of these, though no players are amoung them.)
You can also die True Death -in- the DR, if you are not careful.
-
Well in several books there already a mention of poisons that can bring true death. One book in the deathrealm I believe mentions the poison bringing true death becuase it teleports with you and keeps killing you. So the rules don't seem to be all that clear ;)
I thinkl the soulbody theory and a body being recreated as a "reward" for managing to get out of the DR sounds a lot more logic. Or atleast make it so people aren't sure witch of the two it is ;)
-
Things you should now be able to find in game:
- life expectancy of all races
- a little more about the gods, including the ones that aren't laanx and talad
- more about various animals
- and lots, lots more! Remember, we are listening to you so keep with the questions, cause we'll get answers. :)
-
Why doesnt Jayosa have an books on the differnt race's language?
My question exactly.
Where can we find the languages of all the races.
I want the ABC's of them all...lol
A mini language course would be great.
-
Making well-crafted new languages is a lot of work. Some player-generated efforts for the Nolthrir, Stonebreaker and Enkidukai are available on the PlaneShift wiki (http://pswiki.xordan.com/index.php/Main_Page). I have heard that there is a player in-game who gives lessons in Enkien. ::)

I'd like to know more about the buildings. All buildings.
Who built them? Are there still builders around?
Where did the materials come from? Is there still evidence of this gathering of materials, and if so, where?
When were the cities/houses built anyway?
Buildings mostly look similar according to region, so is this just a sense of tradition or were they all built at the same time by the same people?
How did the big stone face get to be on the BDroad?
What happened to the Emerald city, so it's now in ruins? And what is Canyt investigating at the Fortress?
Now that should give some interesting stories... I hope...
-
In no real order: The houses in Hydlaa are of Ylian design but the temple and the library are of Xacha design. Building is an unimplemented skill as far as I can remember, though I may be wrong, so yes builders are still about. As for the face, that was presumably built by the entire community as it serves all. I'd also assume that the materials are gathered the same way they are in RL. They have forests for wood, mines for stone etc. Can't really speculate on the ruins though.
-
What happened to the Emerald city, so it's now in ruins? And what is Canyt investigating at the Fortress?
Have you tried asking them?
-
@ Andoryn: There is a carpenter between Harnquist and Percival (last time I saw him).
-
I'd love a detailed story book about the origins and life of Londris of the death realm before he became agebound as I find him an interesting character.
I'd like to know more about the dark crystal.
I'd like more on the origins and histories of the different schools of magic.
I'd like to know more about Diaboli in general.
I don't know if I misread the history page on the main site but when discussing Laanx the initial description seems to be referring to and describing a female deity whereas later towards the bottom of the page Laanx is described as him and he. Are deities genderless or is this a mistake?
-
Laanx gave up her feminitinessocity and became a he because she thought she was ugly. So now he's... a he. Well, it's consistent.
-
Its more of giving up gender altogether.
-
Thanks for the quick response.

krans eat crystals and such for their engery but how is this engery tranfured around their bodys? do they have vains filled with blood or some other substance? and a randomly strange questan.. what effect would extremly high tempratures have on a kran? would they melt if it was hot enuff?
-
I actually asked that second one earlier, along with stuff about cracking, smell, etc. I never thought about how they'd distribute energy through their bodies though, nor how their organs/muscles/etc work. Obviously, somebody needs to add a book on Kran anatomy to the library (when they get a chance, of course).
It may be that they're permeable enough that some sort of "Kran fluid" naturally seeps through their entire bodies, no veins required. Movement would help circulate it? Or their metabolism could be low enough that diffusion is enough to keep everything "fed". That would help impose limits to their size, as a forty foot Kran would need extremely low metabolism to survive. It would also provide a means to have "living" areas of cave. They'd be more like ancient trees, functioning very slowly over long periods of time, but alive none the less. They could serve as the "oisters" of the subterranean world, forming gems or ore as a waste product from consuming more dilute amounts within the surrounding rock and condensing it into a clump.
Of course, there would also be the Yliakian Dwarf Trap variety, that get supplemental nutrition from unlucky miners (after all, though I can't say I'd eat someone for hitting me with a pick, I'd certainly be pretty miffed about it!)
Or the Kran might not function remotely like normal critters. Instead of delivering the energy as a substance within a "blood", it could be digested and transformed into another form of energy which can then animate the rest of the Kran's body. You might say, "hey, my Physics prof. would flunk me if I said that!", but this is a world with magic. For magic to exist, there have to be either new forms of energy or new methods for energy to transfer that we don't know about in real life. Probably both.
That doesn't solve how they grow though. I tend to think they're like trees: they grow from the inside out. After extracting the energy from the "food", the remaining material would be transferred throughout their core. Slight permeability would allow some of it to get closer to the surface, allowing for expansion as they get bigger, and for healing if they get nicked. Also, that would mean their exteriors will be the oldest, and thus the hardest and least permeable layer (due to being gradually "filled" over time). That would also serve to keep the "Kran fluid" contained within them rather than oozing out and making them walking piles of sticky slime.
The crystalline nature of their food could be due to crystal's supposed affinity for conducting energy, especially of the magical variety (though their energy would probably be different from what you'd normally consider magic, so it wouldn't be like saying "Kran are magic golems", they just use an energy form we don't have in real life (as far as we know anyways...)). By using that as the material from which to construct their bodies, they'd be making it easier for their energy to reach their extremities (kinda like trying to lower your cholesterol or something). Also, what makes crystal crystal is that the molecules are more organized than in normal materials, which might also make it easier for them to digest it.
Or (unlikely) they could transfer the energy through very low amplitude high frequency vibrations (think quartz). Also a motivation for eating crystals.
Maybe that means Kran have a better sense of time than most creatures, due to their internal buzz...
Another thing I wonder about: the electromagnetic properties of Kran. How conducting, how resilient to damage, whether they are perceptive of large amounts of charge, how magnetic (esp. are they ferromagnetic), does eating magnetic materials increase their magnetic-ness, do magnetic or electrical fields interfere with their biological or mental functions, etc.
I'd also like to know more about the nature of magic. Because in a world with magic, magic is only magic to the uneducated, and is physics to the rest (give King Arthur and Sir Lancelot a pair of walkie talkies and see what they call them!). Sure, at this time period, most people are still in the stage where it's just "magic" and shouldn't be questioned, but that doesn't mean that the Yliakian laws of physics don't exist, just that they haven't been discovered yet.
I haven't read much magic-containing fantasy yet (mostly just sci-fi), but so far my favorite interpretation of magic is that used within the Eregon universe. The binding it to language aspect is stupid, imho, but the energy aspects are what I like. As in, using magic to lift 20 rocks takes the same energy from you as lifting those rocks by hand. Things like that, where people don't just pull energy and matter from nothing and just say "it's magic d00d".

Question 1.
What is the "Evolution" of the Tria/Hexa/Octa/Circle. In the real world gold/silver/bronze were popular due to rarity and resistance to erosion(which the PS coins have too) but what's up with the shape and numerical values? 3 Sides = 1? 6 sides = 10? 8 = 50? A circle = 250? That doesn't make sense in many ways. The values need coins that represent them(often in the form of simply stamping the value on the coin). Also, every good working economy has coins/bills that are worth 1,2,5,10,50. With these numbers any type of transaction can be done with the least possible amount of work, why doesn't PS use this tried and tested method? And what if one of the many kinds of inflation ups the prices in PS? Do you want to create 20-sides coins that are worth 2000 Tria? And what's up with the Materials? Steel, Green Crystal, Blue Crystal, Red Crystal, Gold, Silver, Platinum? What kind of order is that? Silver worth more than Gold? Maybe Silver is rarer than gold in PS, but that goes into everything we have learned about old money in the real world! and Bronze missing while it's perfect for making weapons and armor? Steel, even better, lowest of all? Huh?
Anyway, to recap:
1. Why don't the coins have shapes that represent their numerical value?
2. Why are the numerical values of the coins in such a weird way(1,10,50,250)
3. Does PS know inflation?(if not, then it would be extremely unrealistic ;))
4. Why is the order of materials for the coins so weird?
5. (if Question 3=Yes)How do 1/10 Tria-Coins look like? (Steel, but what shape?) and how do the future 1 Quatorze[edit name at will] coins look like(Represents 1,000 1-coins or 10 100-coins) and the Quinze Coins? (Represents 1,000,000 1-Coins and 1000 1000-coins)
And extra:
6. How heavy/big are the coins?
7. If the amount of coins is kept at a certain level("repair broken coins and replace the ones that leave the city or get lost somehow" I don't see mining new ones here) how come coins are not getting rarer and rarer, since there are more and more people.
8. How come the metal "Orichalc" is the "only metal that doesn't deteriorate whatsoever"? And how come then that 1/10 coins are made of steel, while that is a metal that "deteriorates"
Question 2.
Please give another reason why the city never overpopulates besides the "Killing-by-kindness" theory. It's quite a achievement to stop a city from overpopulating. China for example is trying it's best, but there is still growth.
Question 3.
Tell me more of the Ex-Octarch Fertedian Dalko. How can you be such a bad octarch that you are tied to a... "hypnotized Megaras and sent straight towards the Crystal."...? and what did he leave behind? (What crisis did he create?)
Question 4.
Are there Armies? Were there any wars? (If yes, then: Who invented the strategies used in the wars?)
Question 5.
Explain how it could rain, storm or be foggy in a cave? (Because that would be cool)
Question 6.
Who invented the wheel, who invented the hammer and who invented the metal-smelter and who invented the written word?
Question 7.
What materials are rare in Ojaveda and plentiful of in the Bronze Doors? Same with Hydlaa/Ojaveda and Hydlaa/BD
Please don't see this as somebody trying to ask stupid questions just to make you angry or whatever. See this as somebody who thinks that it's history that creates a country
Cheers to all, Iscariot

For the values of the coins, my guess is to simplify things. I think the idea was to optimize between having a small number of different coins and a wide range of possible values. You have to remember, this is a medieval time period, which means no fancy minting factories where they can just churn stuff out by the millions. So the fewer different types of coins they have to produce, the less work it takes and the cheaper it becomes to produce the money, meaning more budget for other things, like extra cheesecake at important government meetings. So, they skipped some of the intermediates, like 5 and 25.
As for the shape, it would be nice if that was relevant, but it doesn't have to be. Also, I wouldn't be surprised if it used to be relevant at one time, but if the numeric values have been adjusted over the years to what they are now, probably either due to some revolution (like in the real world with the French Revolution and Metric), or in attempts to combine the monetary systems that each race brought with them into something that all races would find acceptable.
If the amount of coins is kept at a certain level("repair broken coins and replace the ones that leave the city or get lost somehow" I don't see mining new ones here) how come coins are not getting rarer and rarer, since there are more and more people.
My assumption is that the level is actually a ratio of coins per person. So more people equals more coins overall, but same ratio, thus same value.
Now, if we take into account that the population isn't increasing, the number will actually remain the same. If this went on for many years, people would just take it for granted that there are X coins floating around. If there were a big disaster though, they'd either realize that the total number will have to start adjusting again, or experience inflation.
EDIT: I should clarify something: Yes, more players enter the city every so often, but that doesn't mean it's growing. Just that more of the population consists of us. But until the number of human players summed with the number of NPCs is greater than the population of the town, it's irrelevant. When we reach that point, then it will be growing. But remember, Hydlaa is bigger than it seems. It's not fully implemented. By the time we have that many people, there will be plenty of other towns out there and people will be spawning all over Yliakum.
As for overpopulation, don't forget these are medieval times. That means:
A. People have shorter lifespans
B. Children have much much lower survival rates than now, especially babies
C. Successful births are also going to be less frequent (no modern hospitals and such; most babies will be delivered by the father, a family member, or a midwife)
D. Potentially a more conservative view of getting jiggy with it, possibly fueled by the lack of birth control. This could be countered by the larger families in older times, but that generally only applies to people in the country (Bigger family == more hands to till fields. But in the city, your income won't increase as much from having kids).
Not that overpopulation can't happen in medieval periods. As I understand it, overpopulation was a big factor in making the black plague as nasty as it was. But, that was probably over a thousand years after humans started settling in Europe. Yliakum, on the other hand, is only ~750 year old, if I remember correctly.
For weather, I've wondered this also. I wrote up how I figured it could happen a year or so ago, so I won't repeat it. Search would probably turn it up. I don't know how realistic my version was though, I'm no meteorologist.
-
how does that figure with the death realm in there, and people coming back from the dead?
by the way...you sound extremely familiar...like a certain social studies teacher I had last year, or someone who happened to have the same class at the time?
-
Good point. Until recently, only the "powerful heroes" were said to escape the Death Relm, but things were clarified better some months ago, making it seem that more people than usual were managing to get through lately. It might have been adjusted yet more over summer, but I haven't played much since May so I wouldn't know.
I don't remember the details enough to form a coherent theory though. I'm sure there's a large percentage of people who still don't make it through and others who could but opt not to, but that doesn't account for those who do get out. But as I understand it, each trip supposedly wears you out somewhat (I mean aside from the "penalty"). I view it like metal fatigue, where over time small stresses cause a chunk of metal to become increasingly brittle until it snaps. So even if people don't stay dead the first time, they will eventually.
Another thing I forgot is emigration. I don't know the stats for Hydlaa, but if emigrants are more frequent than immigrants, that could take some of the load off the population. It could just as easily be the reverse though, with more people coming than leaving.
by the way...you sound extremely familiar...like a certain social studies teacher I had last year, or someone who happened to have the same class at the time?
I haven't had any social studies classes since spring '06, in my senior year of high school, and I doubt any of my teachers influenced my typing much. Other than maybe my AP Lit teacher, who made us do essays analyzing a poem every week, all year. If I were the type to ever have nightmares, I'd still be having them.
-
hmm the deathrealm and ofcourse also magical healing are the two things that make overpopulation a wory I would say, but then the question is how much population is there? How many people came to Hydlaa and for how many people does Yliakum haave room without the need for a solution beside moving to a new part of land?
Anyhow my question is about outside of Yliakum. It written that Laanx encountered severel creatures there and even a declining civilization. How did they survive? Are there still any outposts out there exept for the Black Flame area?
-
Iscariot: Silver is not worth more than Gold in PS. Silver ore sells for about 60 tria whereas gold sells for 240 tria roughly. Both prices are vis the smithy.
As for the overpopulation concern...won't happen. After all, there are literally millions of names available using the naming system. This implies that there is plenty of room for growth. So what if some are named af and ge. The number of names allowed show that there will not be overpopulation. Add to this the fact that since PS is only 5 years old the servers are not reliable, and the fact that this will most likely never become a mainstream classification of game, I dont think overpopulation will be a problem.
And before You jump....try to understand what I am saying. A game that operates like PS will never call to the mainstream gamers, insteadd it will fill a niche of a small number who have been referred to as "Hard Core RPers".
-
He is speaking in terms of settings, not actual players populating a game.
-
ok. I must have mis-understood.
-

*Is* there anywhere outside of yliakum in which it is possible to move to?
what exactly is outside of that stalagtite anyway? nothingness? a cave?
and pizza good, the part that reminded me of my social studies class was the "getting jiggy with it", during world history when talking about the population boom
-
Kadaikos.
-
right...unknown kadaikos...
is kadaikos a cave, a world, a name for nothingness...???
-
The Lemurs multiplied rapidly, built the ten towns of Kadaikos, and they became a prosperous and numerous populations.
For a period, Laanx ruled Kadaikos harshly, giving to the Lemurs inflexible laws and a strict hierarchy. After discovering the delight of ruling his people, the Masked God became greedy for power. He remembered the promise made by Vodùl to send people to Yliakum. They were supposed to arrive in few decades, and he decided to take them all, to lead them to Kadaikos and to become their god.
It would appear to be ten towns.

The reason I'm thinking about how they would be able to survive is the lack of light there. In Yliakum there is the crystal and in Kadaikos it is said Laanx created a light, but how do you survive in the caves where there is no light? You can't farm becuase hardly any plants grow without light and then there is the psychological stress of living in darkness all the time. It kinda makes me wonder what would happen to the eyes of a race who has lived in darkness for generations.
For your contemplation

*points to Xacha and dwarves*
You get pale skin and better eye sight.

Some people also wind up talking to their jewelry, but that's mainly in more isolated cases.
A thing that's easy to forget: Light might be the main source of energy on the surface of Earth, but it's not the only source of energy on Earth, and definitely not the only one on Yliakum's world. Other potential sources:
Geothermal (if I remember right, between two to five miles down on Earth is hot enough to boil water!)
Magma (technically it's part of geothermal, but magma specifically can provide light too)
Radiation (could be harnessed directly I'm sure, but it can also heat stone and water, or cause certain substances to emit light)
Hydro (underground rivers, waterfalls, tides, currents, etc)
Magic (but I don't know enough about PS's specific version of magic to give good examples)
Chemical (for example, if some form of plant or creature could consume coal or oil, or if Kran-like creatures could metabolize more rock-like substances)
Wind (if there's a very long tunnel or large area, heat differences could cause this)
Fusion/Fission (Not natural and seemingly unlikely, but who knows what inhabits the depths? As far as I'm aware, even Talad and Laanx haven't been to the other side of the planet. For all we know, there might be a technologically advanced race of mole men out there with fusion power plants).
There are other sources too, but I don't know enough physics to know much about them (for example, if the planet has a magnetic field, chances are that field is going to be constantly experiencing slight changes. How much energy is available and how it would be harnessed, I know not. And then there's tectonic movements, tidal effects from the sun, moon(s), and other planets, pressure differences, planetary rotation, etc.)
Sure, some of these might seem a little unlikely, but think about it: Plants can absorb sunlight and convert it into energy. Human skin can use sunlight to help produce vitamin-D. If you stop to think about it, that's no less "out there" than anything I mentioned.
-
Is gambling illegal, merely immoral or an acceptable practice in Hydlaa and elsewhere?
-
I mentioned nuclear power above, but I meant that it was being harnessed by intelligent (or at least human-level) life, as in it was not natural. I was not then aware of naturally occurring fission reactors:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Natural_nuclear_fission_reactor
The natural nuclear reactor formed when a uranium-rich mineral deposit became inundated with groundwater that acted as a neutron moderator, and a strong chain reaction took place. The water moderator would boil away as the reaction increased, slowing it back down again and preventing a meltdown. The fission reaction was sustained for hundreds of thousands of years.
Incidentally, I have absolutely no idea how I stumbled across that. On a whim I had switched my Firefox search bar to Wikipedia mode and typed in "cat people". Several hours later I was still in Wiki-land, but reading about the Tsar-Bomb and naturally occurring nuclear fission. Behold, the power of cross-references ::|
EDIT: And it turns out that potty-training a cat is actually possible. I'd always assumed it was just a joke. Go figure.

If the Bronze Doors are power suppliers, for example the watermill at the Eagle, then how is this power put to use? I don't see anything using power in the direct vicinity of the Bronze Door fortress. Is this power transported to places like the Winch for example? How do they manage that? Underground powerlines? :P
-
I don't see anything using power in the direct vicinity of the Bronze Door fortress.
They would operate things like the doors themselves, and uh...um....
Okay, good question. We'll get back to you :)
-
They could very well be grist mills which turn grain into flour...nothing says they have to have a singular purpose or even generate power. The doors might be spring loaded shut and the wheel geared such that if it is engaged to the door mechanism causes them to be opened.
-
There is a book that says they generate power.
-
Is the word electricity mentioned? Power is defined by work over time or W/t so by proper gearing the opening of the Doors is work done in an amount of time and power is used even though no electricity, another form of power, is generated. Indeed even grinding grain causes work to be done over time.
-
In most cases there is a link between the bronze doors and energy production, for economic reasons.
It also mentions the mill and things but I cannot be bothered typing it all out. Basically says that its a power plant.
-
The book mentions the dual functionality of the Bronze Doors. Aside from border fortresses and security they provide power (not electricity) ... my question is just what is that power used for and how.
You could be right, they could be used like your typical mills but then I'd expect to see some grinding stones and other machinery there. Maybe we will one day .. maybe there is more to it? I'm looking forward to my answer :D
-
/me got a URGENT question which can involve the FUTURE OF PS!
Now that I got your attention:
How to pronounce Dakkru? I myself made up this "Dakk" like in "Dakkadamdam", akk like "ACK!" like DD says it and in "attack". And to top it of I though of "ru" r like a r and the u like in "U" from U2.
Soo --> Dack-r-U
:D Am I good or what? <-- actual question ;)
-
Hm, I always thought it was pronounced Da - kroo or Dak - roo.
-
The BD could be used to create and focus magical power for some reason. Maybe they make magic 'batteries'. The Winches -do- work on mechanics powered by magic.
-
I have another annoying set of questions ...
What is the Yliakean Governement's stance on foreign powers or groupings that live outside their rule?
For example the Derghir village or settlers from Kadaikos or other people from the Stone Labyrinths? Are they all forced to abide by Yliakum Law or brutally silenced from the moment they appear on one of Yliakum's levels?
Does Yliakum, as a nation, ever attempt to conquer the Stone Labyrinths?
-
For my people: The idea is not to answer their questions here, but to create in game content that answers their questions.
For all posters: Keep your questions coming many of you may have already noticed some of your concerns have been addressed by in game books in response. Many many are now in editing and we are making every effort to answer all questions deemed reasonable and needful in game.

Halus... is it a talad holiday or a laanx holiday... and is it anythinbg like Christmas... As it is soon coming up, i'm curious about it...

Heh, sure, why not. I love books, and I am a very patient person.
Although I recently (as in the last few minutes) found out that halus may have been a player created rumor started last year....

What are the names of the lakes, rivers and mountains already in Yliakum?
-
What do you mean by "already in Yliakum"?
If you mean "the ones you see in game," then the "lakes and rivers" you see are actually ponds and streams, and will be named soon, as will the mountain ranges. We have people on it.
If you mean "known in Yliakum," there are a handful mentioned already in game in various places - two rivers and two lakes for sure. I don't believe there are any named mountains/ranges as of yet. But I'll look into it.
-

I guess I meant the ponds and streams then. :D
Another question that has been really bugging me is what all the different weapon modifiers do (fire, dark, icy, darkweave, silverweave, etc.), I know (or assume) that a lot of them don't do anything at the moment but it would be nice if there was some in-game info about different types of weapons.
-
" And now I'm even more curious. When you mention worshiping, how is this done? Since there is only the Laanx Temple that I know of, how are the other gods worshiped? Do the priests partake in celibacy? Are there icons and images? are there saints (not sure of the Yliakum-ism for it) that are also prayed to? Is there a liturgy? How do couples of different religions get married? is it a religion sanctioned event? Or is it state-sanctioned? Are there different sects with the various worshiping of the gods? Are there monasteries and convents for those who wish to fully devote their lives?"
Now that i think of it...will there be iconoclasts as well? What about theologians? Can players be theologians for the various religions? Will there every be some sort of registry of where characters come from? Ie as in in the temple of the local village where the naming ceremony (or whatever) happened after they were born? (the reason behind infant baptism pre-reformation was that it was like getting your citizenship card in your local village...and a way of keeping track for historical reasons who was born to who)
One of the quests mentions that all crystal way mages have a tattoo...is it possible for characters in-game to get this tattoo to show their allegiance to a particular way of magic or is that a no-no for the same reasons as racism?
And Jeraphon asked me to post here...so blame him if any of these are all ready covered in the settings :D
-
I think this is a question for the settings: In the wiki you can read this about the Klyros:
Their skin is similar to reptiles, being slimy and cold
That is a bit contradictory, as reptile skins aren't slimy and cold, but dry and scaly. Thus, I'd like to know which one is true - is it reptile-like or more amphibious, slimy and cold?
-
Why are there so many npcs who know little about their basic trades? All in good time I am certain.
Why is it that Jayose know little about the books in his library, he ought to be able to answer some questions about their content, even if his memory is not encyclopedic, and the same question for Kerryk Cor and his archives. If it is just that so much to do and it is planned, fair enough, otherwise allow me to suggest it.
Still, you would expect a self-proclaimed archivist to know what an archive is and at least be able to mention the names of the materials involved in his quests when asked about his archive or his collection. Are there any plans to make those materials readable? At the moment they are pretty generic quest items with a brief description.
Keep up the good work!
-
Why do the game lands bear less resemblance to this
(http://www.planeshift.it/graphics/yliakum-map.jpg)
then they do to a large flat continent on the surface?
-
Because all the lands in the game so far are on the first level?
That was an easy one! :)
-
But still if it's a hollow cone you would be able to see across from one side to the other as well as if you went to the inner edge of one of the platform/rings you'd be able to look down at lower levels.
kill your graphics card much? :P
-
You're thinking on a scale much smaller than Yliakum's. Even if you were to look down (or across) from one of the top levels, you'd see some strong atmospheric perspective - and not too many details.
-
Go to the winch, look down ... don't fall down. :P
-
As per request elsewhere, I would like more detail about the various racial susceptibilities to various substances. This would include Ynnwn vulnerability to precious metals, Diaboli vulnerability to the sacred and Kran resistance to the crystal's effects. Any or all of these things would be appreciated.
Is it possible for some kind of unguent to act as a substance block in a manner similar to SPF sunscreen?
On another matter I would like to see some information about the weights and measurements system. From what I can tell this has not been worked out in detail and that contributes to the incorrect values assigned to some items. Some specific questions I would like answered concerning this are - are they continuous systems such as metric or disjointed like grams, ounces and pounds (or the monetary system for that matter)
- what number base is common, do they use decimal, octal, binary, hex or something else.
- do different cultures have different systems or is there one official system or both.
-

BIG STALACTITE

I've been wonder about how to tell one enki clan from another. For Instance are the beige enkis from one clan and the blackish enkis from another or do they mix and match?
I think I read somewhere that they cut and dye their fur in different ways.
Speaking of which, is pack changing a common thing? Frowned upon? Chosen by the child or parent(s) when each comes from a different pack? Do the Enki's make or buy their dyes? Do they have special dyes so as to not harm their fur and if so, is it illegal or socially unacceptable for another race to obtain the Enki's dye? Are there any known cases of Enkis trying to start a new pack? Do the different packs have alliances or feuds between them? Do their leaders meet up on a regular basis? Are their children called "kittens" or "cubs"? Do they keep regular cats as pets?
-
Try reading the whole thread. I'll wager most of those questions were already answered.
-
Hi, I've got a couple of questions that have been nagging at me:
- Is there any source of light inside the stone labyrinths at all? I got the impression that there may be other peoples living there still, but I only see it referenced in the history as perpetually dark -- not exactly somewhere I'd expect to find anything larger than bats, let alone random villages. Apologies if this has been covered somewhere as its not obvious to me and I'm having a hard time visualizing it.
- Under the Octarchal Decree of 425 AY, section X (dispute resolution via dueling) seems to draw some roots from feudal trials by combat. Along those lines, is there any provision for one to hire a champion to settle disputes on your behalf? I don't see any laws that would bar such a practice, but I'm curious if this is something that would generally be socially acceptable (say amongst the merchant class etc) or frowned upon. The wording of the decree itself seems to leave room for settling disputes by proxy (which could be quite fun, actually).

Are there any racial wars/constant hate between races due to religion?
Is there a religion a specific race shouldn't be able to take?
Why isn't there a suggested religion for a race, because that is the religion the whole race has (Kran being Talad worshipers)?
Why is there only the option to be Talad or Laanx religion when creating a new character, even though there are more Gods (with ingame information about them)?
When is religion going to matter really ingame?
And why isn't there some sort of Talad temple in the Kran city (excuse me if there is and I just don't know)?
-
Are there any racial wars/constant hate between races due to religion?
I believe there's some clause against racism in the Octarchal Decree.
(Found it: XX. Racism is formally forbidden in all cases. Any predisposition against another race is vulgar and demeaned in the eyes of the Octarchy. We exist only inasmuch as we cohere, and many of us carry the blood of other races. The time for petty disagreements is past and the Octarchy has no place for those who would carry on the battles of yore.
XXI. Racism and racially motivated speech shall not be tolerated. It is far better to do away with dissenters than to promote hate. Those who would denounce harmony shall be cast into the fire.)
Why is there only the option to be Talad or Laanx religion when creating a new character, even though there are more Gods (with ingame information about them)?
There are more, if you scroll down (Dakkru, Xiosia, Black Flame, Atheist).
When is religion going to matter really ingame?
Sometimes it does IC'ly, for now, but I'd like to hear the answer to this, too :)
-
The only answer to the question, when the chosen religion will have an influence on stats & skills, can be: "soon (tm)"...
A few years ago, some people took a lot of time discovering the results of all options in the character creation. During that time, all the "Religion" option (according to these experiments) did was draining the "Character Points" a bit. No other advantage or disadvantage was known. But there were no "Factions" available at that time...
There will be only very few people knowing the current state. ;) -- At least I (personally) doubt that fresh characters today will already have advantage factors related to their religion or family structure. But I assume that it will get implemented somehow, someday. Experiences and jobs in childhood and family already give startup skills and stat changes, but a continuing advantage is nothing I heard of yet.

My character is old, I didn't have that option at that time.
Just imagine it has an impact on your skills, what if in your RP story you happen to change your religion. Would that change an impact then, and, how is it notified, how does your religion show (if you want to choose to show it) besides just roleplaying it. (I know if it will come soon (tm) but I would really wonder if there is an intend for that case already.
Another question:
As there now have been more religions added, how many are there to come? Is it unknown yet, or is there a plan?
-

There's no plan, but currently all signs point to no more deities to come.

Here's a quick one i've been thinking about lately.
I know Kran are silicon based, but what silicon properties are we talking about? Rock hard silcon or the Pamela Anderson type silicon? Or are they a combination of both, a crusty hard outer skin with a softer, more pliable squishy silicon impant like centre?
I did a quick search and couldn't find any similar questions/answers in the first page of results. But hey my searching skills aren't renowned in this realm... ;)
-
Rock hard silicon.
Breast implants are made of siliconE.
-
if they are rock hard silicone how come their skin is merely light armor?
-
And how do they move? :) I always thought it was a silicon-based lifeform, just as people are carbon based lifeforms, but are not made of diamond.
-
I always figured it was the consistency of silicon sealer. This line of thinking makes me wonder something else though, if they have no hair, do they have no finger/toenails either?
-
Do they even have toes?
-
A tongue? ;P
Too many questions. I;m sure they are a lot like everyone else, just different.
-
What do the races know of their previous lands, gods etc., bearing in mind that for races like the Dermorians their arrival was only about 2 lifespans ago? Do any still believe in their old gods or old ways (the Octarchal Decree of 425 states "XII. All may worship in the means that they please." though it is noted that another less accessible book states that a battle over 300 years ago "helped organise the creation of the Octarchy and the banning of the old ways".)
When were the Bronze Doors built? Are there any records of a noteable battle of the races against an invader (an army of terrible force) which penetrated into Yliakum itself ? Again bear in mind that Dermorians and possibly other races alive today could quite concievably have had fathers or grandfathers who were involved in this battle (c. 300 years ago) who would have passed on such information.
What knowledge is there of the cities, towns and villages of the Stone Labyrinths e.g. Kadaikos, Rooms, Ilith Thalisand and Xant Laan? If there was no knowledge/ communication how were populations of Dwarves, Dermorians and Xacha able to be established in those places, and what became of the Lemurs who followed Laanx when he abandoned Kadaikos? Presumably there is some knowledge as one book indicates the pupose of the battle was to drive the Dwarves and Elves of those cities into Ylakum. If so is the great fog which cut of some cities known about, and are people not suspicious or concerned?
I also noted what I believe to be a discrepancy? The Yliakum Geography book states "Legends tell that Yliakum is located inside a giant stalactite, with nothing but air outside it." while the book on Races tells us that following an earthquake on the planet a series of tunnels were created "These tunnels were eventually explored by the inhabitants of the surface and some of them, covering a very great distance, were discovered to connect to the Stone Labyrinths that are in turn connected to Yliakum." Do we know which races came from the surface, and which through the portals?
-
A couple of things I'm wondering about:
Unless I'm totally misreading the info about it, the Crystal is at a fixed point in Yliakum's sky, rather than moving the way the sun does. Does this mean that shadows from stationary objects would also be stationary? (And if so, does Yliakum have a lot of shade-growing plants to take advantage of the large amount of permanently shaded growing space?)
And a related question: how do people in Yliakum navigate? Do they have some form of celestial navigation, or do they have to rely on compasses and landmarks?
-
Peanuts, yes the crystal is a fixed crystal up in the ceiling of the cavern that is Yliakum. However this is just a crystal and not the source of light. The actual source would probably be one (or more?) suns that illuminate the planet. Since those light sources still move, the light coming through the crystal will move a bit as well. I imagine it won't be as explicit as it would be on the surface world.
-
I'd like further clarification on Dakkruism (and the other religions, for that matter. I'd like to know more about the methods of worship, requirements for the devout of different gods, what's done to heretics in each religion, how the gods feel about the other gods excepting the relationship between Talad and Laanx, which we already know about).
Ever since I started roleplaying, I've seen people and books/NPC's contradict each other on Dakkru. I have IC reasons for my character to have misconceptions (her brother went nuts and sacrificed himself to Dakkru; she doesn't talk about it much, and some other stuff that could easily be pinned on the goddess has gone on during the course of my roleplaying). However, I'd like to OOC'ly know more about what I'm playing dumb about.
This isn't just about players playing Dakkru's followers and making her look "evil" through doing things in her name, either. I've noticed some contradictions in the settings. First I go to the DR and read things along the lines of "Dakkru favors those that kill in her name: rogues, brigands," etc...(I don't currently have the book saved, but I have read through it a couple of times), but then I see the NPC's say things like "If you want to please Dakkru, live well and die well" and "I don't think she's evil per se" - making her sound not quite so bad. Well, I suppose "die well" could be taken several ways, but you get what I'm tryin' to say here, right?
-
I like to think of it this way, she's neither good nor evil (bear in mind, I am likely the least qualified person in this game to talk about Dakkru, but here I am :)). She seeks only to collect the spirits of the deceased, and further expand the popuation of her realm. Seeing as how the only way to do that is through death, she would obviously encourage some to kill in her name. However, no one with half a brain wants to join a cult of indescriminent killers, so she has others portray her in a better light. One side is going "Dakkru told me to kill you, so die mfer!" while the other side is saying "Dakkru wishes you to live well, and will protect you when your time comes to join her. So live, and be happy, and accept your death when it comes". It could be far more complicated than that, and I could likely explain my view in far more detail, but I think this would at least explain the contridictory writings and opinions of her followers (in addition, I lack the time and the desire to write out my 30 page opinion of the complicated nature of Dakkru and her motives). In conclusion, I think the best way to look at her is not as evil, or good, but cold as death. ;)
A woman/god/thing with a goal in mind.

Thank you Jeraphon, I guess we can include wasps in our Roleplay then? I am guessing the local bug expert does not currently have anything to say about them or you would have told me to ask around in the game.

What kind of beasts provide the horns for those two helms
-
If a child born of a bi-racial couple is only of one parent's race are they a clone of that parent?
Because they'd only get the genes for one set of traits and those traits would exactly match that parent's... Or would say a child of a Dermorian and a Nolthrir be more likley to have darker hair or something...
-
Aside from Ynwwn, any child of two races is purely one race or the other. They will not carry any traits of the race they do not take after. However, the child will have traits and features similar to both parent's traits and features relative to their own race. A dwarven child with a tall dwaven mother and short Dermorian father may grow up to be a short dwarf, taking after his father's size relative to other Dermorians, despite Dermorians being a taller race than dwarves.
Relative traits that will carry over from both parents despite race are hight, body structure, beauty, personality inclinations, etc. A child will never inherit a racial trait from the parent they did not take after. If the elvish father has the common red hair of his people, the Lemur child will -not- have any red coloring in his hair, but will instead have an equally common Lemur hair color equivalent to the elvish red.
The child will also never be a clone.
Why? The genes of the non-dominant parent's race are converted into the equivalent genes of the the other parent's race upon conception.
How? Magic and possible divine intervention. It is a fantasy game. Leave a little mystery in things. ;)
-
Does a Kran refer to their parent as their mother or father? Krather? Just plain "parent"?
-
I'm not sure if this question has already come up, since I haven't read the entire thread. But on the subject of bi-racial couples and their children, is it completely random which race (mother's or father's) the child will be?
For instance, if a Dermorian and a dwarf have a child, is there a 50-50 chance that the child will be either a Dermorian or a dwarf, or is it closer to a 75-50 chance in the Dermorian's favor, or vice versa, or what?
I hope I worded that less confusingly than I think I did. :sweatdrop: Just curious...
-
Parent is right.
It is random (and the choice of the player). Please be sure to read the ingame books for more info.
-
Now that the new character model means one sees more Nolthrir running around, I'm curious about a couple things:
I know from reading various settings info that the light of the Crystal is only strong enough to penetrate the Seventh Level, meaning that Yliakum's big lake gets very dark the further you go down. Presumably this means it also gets very cold, unless there's one heck of a lot of active hydrothermal vents down there. Do the Nolthrir have increased resistance to chilly temperatures to make it easier to venture into the depths? Would they find the Dome balmy?
Also, how do people living in the underwater areas handle the language issues that would cause? Anyone who's ever played "Guess What I'm Saying" in a pool knows that words sound different underwater, so using Yliakum's lingua franca (Ylian, IIRC) probably wouldn't work without magical assistance. Do the Nolthrir have their own language, presumably tailored to underwater acoustics, that's used as the standard down there?
-
Due to the nature of Yliakum, the entire lake would be a relatively constant temperature. The lake is in a cycle of constantly draining out the bottom and filling from the top by streams warmed on the upper levels.
-
Another Nolthrir question. How far up does the webbing on their hands go and do they also have it on their feet? The reason I ask is because I picture the webbing to extend to about the knuckle, which would make wearing rings very hard to do. Is the webbing much shorter? And how effective is it in helping them swim?
Also off of what Peanut mentioned about a language, I would also imagine a that the Nolthrir have a hard time hearing on land since sound travels much better in water
-
Hearing does not work quite the same way in air as underwater. Ears operate with air vibrations bounced around inside the canals. Their structure would be relatively useless if filled with water, not to mention vulnerable to infection. Nolthrir most likely rely on a refined secondary sound absorbing system that other creatures (including humans in more basic form) possess, being the jaw and skull bones, which are much better at transferring sound waves from liquid to the inner ear bones responsible for hearing. I am not sure about this, but it would make the most sense if Nolthrir ears closed off completely while underwater.
-
What kind of beasts provide the horns for those two helms
Most likely kormis.
-
I haven't been able to find these anywhere IG, but please tell me if I can:
- Is the actual way glyphs DRAW the power from the crystal unknown (I mean as in how they draw and get the power from the crystal, not how they are formed)?
- If tiny parts of the Crystal do fall, how big are these, and how common?
- Is the damp and mould in the deeper sections of the Laanx Temple dungeon caused by proximity to the sewers, or some other factor?
- Are the banners in the dungeon replaced, or have they mostly been preserved by the poor ventilation and unstirring air, or by magical mkeans?
- Would these tiny parts of the Crystal have an effect on a being? As in True Death when consumed, or can we as players determine this in our RP?
- Are burial wells supposed to be watched by guards, or is it a matter of tradition which makes people stay away?
-
If you go to the stone head you will see an actual npc guard guarding it.
-
Also I've heard people say we aren't ment to know we are in a slaigtite but I read that a xacha came up with the theory and we aren't alowed to mine on the lower levels because of this. So which way is it?
I know I should think of everything then put it in one post rather than posting as they come.
If the topmost level of the stalagtite is closest to the crystal, then is there ever nightfall or wouldn't the crystal provide light throughout the day and night? (how many hours are in a day? is it 24 like ooc?)
Is there another world or are there other races outside of the stalagtite? has anyone ever gotten outside and is there a way to go outside?
(should I even stop asking these questions if there is no such thing as an outside?) ;)
-

The people do know now that Yliakum is in a hanging stalactite. Any books that say otherwise are (or will be) dated before that discovery was made.
The crystal draws is light from the 'outside' world. In theory from a surface world. That brings cycles of day and night.
As for another world, not as far as this game is currently concerned. No one has ever traveled tot he surface. There are no other races, and no one came from the surface.

That actually paints quite an interesting picture. I can see it now... sitting by the campfire with the young kittens (or other youngens) telling them of the great unknown beyond the walls [which for some reason we can't see] and possibly the greatness of the Gods for creating such a place; or scary stories of the huge monsters that roam outside our protected world.
All of this of course would be done at the dark time when the sparkles from the crystal dust in the air starts to settle and is lit by distant city lights.
very cool. ;D
-
Speaking of the light from the crystal, if Yliakum is just a stalactite on a larger planet, wouldn't there have to be multiple real suns for the day and night cycles to be about the same length. With only one sun I would think that the night would be a lot longer than day.
-
In Earth terms, the Crystal is like a big glow stick. The energy it gathers is released gradually.

So then the glowy thingy in the really dark place [i ended up there once when a rat thought I was it's dinner] would be like a big blacklight glow stick?
uh huh. I see. Go on. [waits with baited breath]
or is there a book in the library I can read? POINT ME I WANT MORE!!!!!!!!!!!!!! :o
-
Well it is possible that if the azure crystal is lit from the sky, the dark crystal may be lit by a lava lake far below or some such thing...

Only one little issue .. nobody has been out there so nobody knows it exists. According to all our characters, Yliakum is their world and the cavern systems together with it, their universe. They can't imagine a surface world with so much more land and life. Probably a good thing or everyone would start buying pickaxes and digging their way up :P

This was a cool explanation but then I saw that the crystal was moved from it's spot on the wall.

Some Communications and Physiology-Related Questions on the Kran
1. What is the correct (nominative) plural for "Kran"? Is it built in analogy to:
a) fan > fans (kran > krans)?
b) man > men (kran > kren)?
c) ox > oxen (kran > kranen)?
d) fish > fish (kran > kran)?
e) Etc.
2. What is the correct adjectival form for "Kran"? Is it built in analogy to:
a) English > Kranish?
b) Gothic > Kranic?
c) Elven > Kranen?
d) Martian > Kranian?
e) Global > Kranal?
f) Granular > Kranular?
g) Etc.
3. Are the different stone types/colours responsible for their apparent differences in intelligence and/or linguistic capacity? (The more well spoken NPCs in Gugrontid seem to be of a brighter colour, while the not-so-bright Kran are typically 'granite'-coloured, e.g. Quasus vs. Malco. Is this intentional?)
4. Kran don't breathe like other races. But do they laugh/sigh/cough? Can they get the hiccups? Does running cause them to breathe heavily? That is, do they ever have to "catch their breath"?
5. Kran don't have ears, but instead "hear" through vibrations they pick up in their bodies. Does this mean that Kran can't hear things with a very low vibration rate (like the wind blowing through leaves or water trickling over stones)? Or perhaps the reverse, i.e. that they hear even better than most others? Can Kran hear things that otherwise would be impossible, like how fast/slow/irregularly someone's heart is beating (seeing as the heart sends out a kind of vibration), or someones brainwaves? And how much of a role does their "hearing" play in their vision? Do they have good eyesight? Is it complimented by their "hearing" (similar to a bat's "sonar")? Do the auditory vibrations manifest themselves as "images" seen in the Kranic "mind's-eye"?
6. Seeing as Kran are relatively "stiff" creatures, does this affect how they speak? For instance, do they have any speech impediments? (For example, 'p' is pretty tough to pronounce if you don't have moist and flexible lips. You might rather pronounce it as 'b'.) While we're on the topic of articulation, do they have teeth? If so, how many? Or perhaps they just have a pair of solid dental ridges?
7. Can Kran smell? I mean this in both senses, i.e. do they have a sense of smell and can they have body odour? Do they sweat? If so, is it a kind of liquid? Or rather some kind of "dust"? Further, do they ever feel the need to take a bath? If so, do they go to a lake? Or perhaps they roll around in mud? Or in dust, like some birds? Do they have parasites? Can moss grow on a Kran? If so, would that be considered attractive? Or perhaps a sign of spiritual advancement (seeing as they would probably have to be sitting in one place for a long time meditating to have moss growing on them).
More to come...
EDIT: Not exactly related to the specific topic above, but still related to Kran:
8. Could we have some more detail on the big stone/megalith in the Temple of Talad in Gugrontid? A right-click infobox or perhaps even a short dialogue with Quasus here would be great. What significance does it have? How was it formed? Is it contructed of brick-like pieces? Or are those lines carved into its surface? Do the forms the lines create represent something? Perhaps something with spiritual significance? How did it get there? Is it the focal point of Kran worship? If so, is that the case only while they are in the temple? Or does it perhaps serve as a point of orientation for more things, like the direction of prayers even while outside Gugrontid, etc.? While we're at it, please also tell us something relating to the two blue crystals on each side of the central megalith. (For example, the temple does occasionally become filled with a blueish light. Does this light emanate from these crystals? If so, how? Is there a symbiotic relationship between the priest and these stones? Or is it a means of expression of Talad himself?)

I am very interested in the answers to these, especially that Kran color observation.
I'm also still wondering about how far the fins go up along a Nolthrir's finger and how this effects their ability to wear rings. I think it got overlooked next to my other question that was answered.
-
On the Windowless Tower:
What purpose does it serve? Who might be expected to be met up there, if anyone? Does the average person in Hydlaa find it diffcult to reach?
And what's with all of the crates and boxes when you leave the Laanx dungeon?
-
Questions noted. I can't promise fast answers.
-
What's with Deelor's Russian accent? Is there somewhere in Yliakum with more people that talk like that?
-
i get that we are inside of a big rock pretty much.but what about things like fire...im sure at one time or another a rampaging fire has had to happen. no way to avoid it. even if not we all still carry torches around build campfires use magic that makes heat and flame. with all of this smoke and gas why are we not choking to death?
water usually flows down, how has nobody ever followed the water up ( or down )? if it comes from the surface world im sure a kran or a klyros would have been a bit nosey at least once and went up-stream..
dwarf people are very diggy things. im amazed they have not dug their way into a bottomless pit or at least to the tip of our little rock.
how is it we are all still in the dark that we are actually living inside of a very small space

I'm fairly sure that not only is this known, but that digging of that sort is highly illegal as a result...
-
The stalactite is just a theory, but digging is not allowed, just in case the theory is true. Or so I read somewhere.
-
with all of this smoke and gas why are we not choking to death?
Until this is answered, I'm assuming there are probably many entrances to the Stone Labyrinths that have been left unguarded (or possibly are too small to merit guarding), and those provide some ventilation.
-
It might be that Xiosia has her eye on the environment and one of her magics is responsible.
-
It might be that Xiosia has her eye on the environment and one of her magics is responsible.
Quite so. I think it's quite appropriate for nature to have a few mysteries, after all... ;)
-
how is it we are all still in the dark that we are actually living inside of a very small space
The gas can be diffused through the soil or crystal or vented through the many caverns that eventually connect to the upper world. Ventilation through a network of cracks, caves and whatnot also arises. A portion of it is caught in the rain and brought back down to the surface of Yliakum to keep the soil fertile.
Some more intelligent and influential Yliakeans do know we're inside a stalagtite of sorts, the general population is just oblivious to this. Also keep in mind that the space isn't that small from our character's point of view. In the middle ages people's world was also small compared to current knowledge but they just didn't have any means to communicate or travel further away.
Digging below the first level is strictly regulated by the Octarchy and forbidden most of the time. The first level is above the cave-level, where the stalagtite is still connected to the rocks that make up the cave so digging there won't easily lead you to the cavern.
The surface world would be far, far away .. without doubt several times the distance of Yliakum's 8 levels. Nobody is swimming that far upstream without tiring. They'd get tired and be flushed down again if there is a lack of resting places out of the water. Underground rivers also tend to be ice cold causing undercooling and I wouldn't recommend swimming in them for anyone. Following the water down will result into a long joyride to your death.
Basically the proportions are huge enough for nobody to bother finding out, there are more worrisome things happening inside the stalagtite and those that do know may want to keep a lid on it to prevent mass hysteria?
-
Wait. Only a few people in this world know we're in a stalactite? That seems highly unlikely. Travelers coming from the Bronze Doors would spread the word that they could see the walls spreading up and over them. I'm sure there are other zones to be built yet that will also reveal the underground/stalactite nature of the world they're in once they're built, such as the lower levels that would gradually decrease in size, which supposedly are there, just not in game yet. We've had discussions on if the texture of the ceiling looked more like a cave or sky, and the opinion was that it was indeed a cave observable from all over the realm. There are the holes they throw stuff down into that they supposedly know drops down inside an even bigger cave than the one they're living in. The harder thing to explain is that giant crystal floating in the sky. :-\
I can understand not everyone having a solid understanding of what a stalactite was, but there are stalactites and stalagmites observable in the world. Someone would have had to have said at some point, "We live in something like that, only bigger." and that would have spread throughout fast. Plus, if they're believers in Talad or Laanx, the whole story would have been there. Why hide it? This doesn't seem like something that the select few would hold to themselves. There's no source of power in it, in fact, if they want to stop people from getting resources at will, something people in power like to do, it would only make sense to tell everyone they are in a stalactite and they risk causing the collapse of the entire world if they continue digging for ore outside of their own special interests. They have the perfect means of control over the populace's quest for resources. They're not going to ruin that.
From a pure gaming perspective, the "living in a giant stalactite" was a main feature that has drawn me here to see how different PS could be, instead of the standard "live on a globe" environment.
It seems to me the cat is out of the bag. The players make up most of the general populace, and they know and talk about it in game. The NPC's should certainly have picked it up by now.
-
Everyone nowadays knows the story that Yliakum is in a stalactite. None alive have actually seen this with their own eyes. It is much like when the 'new world' was discovered in the exploring period of Earth. Everyone heard the tales, but most of the populations either thought they were stretched or did not care.
-
People laughed at the one that said the world is a round globe, people will laugh equally hard at the yliakean that says the world is a huge hollow stalagtite inside a much bigger world ... until eventually it may be accepted after more and more insights.
That we're living inside a cave is no secret though, that one is obvious but what it looks like outside that cave-world of ours .. now that's the unknown part. You can't tell from the inside perspective of a cave world that this cave world is located in a stalagtite hanging at the roof of a much bigger cave.
-
Okay, I see the diff between living in a cave and knowing it's a giant stalactite. Didn't quite get that right in my first post.
I am intrigued by the idea that maybe the world isn't a stalactite, though maybe a little disappointed too. PS was building from Daunte's Inferno, the x levels of the world, be it heaven, hell, or something in between. There was something magical and different about that. Don't know if any of you ever played Planescape:Torment (though I always kind of thought Planshift was partially inspired by Planescape), but that was a great game that took this different kind of approach. When I first read the the lore of PS, it seemed pretty written in stone what had happened between Talad and Laanx and how they discovered and built the world of Yliakum. It seems like there has been a backing off on this whole story by the settings team. There seems to be a lot more question about what is going on, and if the whole thing is true or not, and that puts all the religions of PS as nothing more than myth. If it's not a given that the world is in stalactite, then it's not a given that Talad or Laanx even exist. If they don't, what other implications does that lead to?
I really wish someone would rewrite all the history sections of the website given what has developed. There's just so much conflicting information there with what the settings teams seems to have moved the story too. I know, time time time. Maybe someday.
Would it be possible to create a forum thread that links all the various threads and discussions that contain settings information? That would make finding some of the information a little easier. Lock the forum if you're worried about spoilers and only let the settings team post to it. Just something that collects and stores it in one place.
-
MustangMR, it is absolutely true that Yliakum is inside a giant stalactite. It is just that a lot of the residents of Yliakum might not completely believe it. It is an outrageous story/fact, and the shear scale makes it hard for the 'common man' to grasp. The Talad and Laanx story is also completely 'true'. So, your may lay your concerns in that area to rest.
For the rest, the mainsite has always been in conflict with itself. Changes are in the works, so do not despair. Someday may be sooner than you think.
-
I think, the "history" with his creation of Yliakum should be more the mythologic genesis and will be only half-true. Because i found ingame books wich tells different stories. for example, the word "yliakum" was found on an old stone from the first settlements between unknown ruins, but who owned these ruins? Kran, Lemurs? Why there are ruins on Bronze Door Road, in nearly 800 years, ther should be some people who still remember what there was, espacially the Kran, who have a lifeperiod of up to 150 years, so thats only a few generations. I think it would be more intersting, if there is still the possibility of unknown old cultures, who knew the stonelabyrinths and Yliakum before. That must not be a break with the current story, because the Talad/Laanx text can be a story, in which most people believes and its told for centuries, but its like in the bible: Noone can tell, how the world was create and when.
So it would be funny, to create different theories or believings (atheism still exist) without a clear and only true is given Taht would make the society of Yliakum much more complex :)

Do the schools of Argan, Esteria and Lah’ar have connections to any religion in particular? Where are they practiced? How do they get taught? Are there any important figures?
How dose this relate to the Ahrijani? What exactly is practiced/taught in the monastery of Ahrija Agat(what school?) What is the history of these schools and the monastery?
Haven't been ingame for some time(and now i cant get in), but last time i checked there was no information on these subjects.

Came here the day the server pooped. Not sure if this is settings or not but...I know I've not a real right to yak but...The settings you have provided are wonderful.
Every citizen of PS ought to know the basics of what you have layed out yes? I would wish a tutorial page that not only tests a players ability to move, trade, fight etc,
but also knowledge of the lore. Answer questions about the history, economy, politics, and races to be admitted. I arrived here the day the server pooped and I have been reading everything I could find since then. I come here from another game and am looking for RP. Lots of flame in forums about this. How about if PS citizenship is difficult to obtain? Part of the setting is that governing body is a bit paranoid? Entry to PS is only available to those willing to learn and contribute to well being of community. Religions are not fully implemented yet I think but one step toward that might be demanding demanding basic knowledge before one can enter?
Government is supposed to be a bit paranoid!! Make people LEARN the game before they can just go to the pub and LOL. Then when they do? Let other players kill them!
-
You must not be from the United States... we can't even get everybody to speak a single language here... but I digress...
I am not part of the PS staff, but right now, the game is still under heavy development. Requiring people to know lore/background before even entering the game is a bit of a stretch at this point. I have proposed, on the bug tracker as a Feature Request, to have all characters start out with two items:
1. A book that lists all the critical things they NEED to know, and the things that they WOULD know being from a particular area, not having just fallen off the turnip truck.
2. A journal for recording information their character learns, important encounters, thoughts, etc.
I have also read about people suggesting allowing membership in both a private guild, and a official PS guild. Entrance to a PS guild would mean meeting some requirements, possibly settings related.
-
The emphasis seems to be on the inside. I want to know whats "Down" below us ? The devs have created lots of new stuff to explore since my arrival in this world. And the crater cave is a good example of whats below us ie directly under each map. Lets have more of this. exploration is instinctual & we all love it. I for one am IC just a peasant & dont have a full grasp of the PS world. Its huge scale etc.
I do have one question? The big round door thats locked near Trasok's,where does it go? Will it ever be opened?
-
Dragnoor, I think the big locked doors in Akkaio lead to the other Dsars in Ojaveda. :)
-
The one near Trasok's specifically leads to the Steel Bazaar, which is not its own Dsar but presumably part of Akkaio. The one at the far end leading into the center is for Sarraghi. I forget about the others.
-
How much permeates through the Bronze Doors. Can anyone go through, or does one need a pass? Is there a quarantine period when coming out? Is it easy to send a message, or even visit an outpost?
-
A question for any that may have the answer... or maybe the answer needs to be developed...
I have always wondered why the sitting is different between the different races. Is it because of the different religions followed and different praying stances? I am reading in the library on occassion to try to find the answer.
Azileq (Qeliza)
-
Is it because of the different religions followed and different praying stances?
Religion is not related to races. Each character can worship any number of gods he so chooses.
And, character animations must not be taken literally, as they are just representations of an activity. No individual has to sit the same way than another individual of the same race, while animations are race-dependent since each race needs a different 3d model (offering different sitting animations for each character would be an unnecessary extra workload for the development teams).
If it still bugs you, you can simply imagine that each race, having a different origin, sits according to an old cultural habit, that can even pre-date Yliakum.
-
As far as magic goes, are there simple household spells for things like cleaning? If so, what way do they belong to?
-
Cleaning? Azure I would think, since you are moving things around.
-
Especially because of my plans to create a character, that is a religious fanatic with missionary ambitions, I am interested in the answer to the following questions. I am aware of threads with similar topics and some posts in this threads, but I could not find a satisfying official answer. So here I am, hoping not to be reduntant.
- Where does the domain of religion, the supernatural begin?
Magic is quite natural to the inhabitants of Yliakum, be it of divine origin or not, so it should not be the border. (To the people of Yliakum the deeper mechanisms of magic might be at worst what microbiology was to the people of the middle ages, to whom cheese was nothing unusually divine nevertheless.)
For the existence of Laanx et cetera to be as undeniable, as stated in the description of atheism in the character creation, there has to be at least a publically perceived limit to what the playable races can achieve with magic, which is clearly exceeded by the Planeshift Gods. Where is this limit?
Regarding the description of the “Journey to inner self: Laanx” in the character creation, the question also is about the limits to the magic methods of brain washing.
- Why is the existence of the Planeshift Gods as obvious as stated in the character creation?
What would have (scientifically) convinced a sceptic chracter of the existence of some gods or at least very powerful wizards? - What could make this sceptic think, that it would do any good to worship these beings?
After all it might be possible from a sceptic's point of view, that the gods do not care about worship and it is just a waste of time. Also: What are the perceivable benefits of this worship? - Finally, why is it not common to worship more than one god?
It would not be surprising of course, that for example organised Laanxism as the analogy to the RL monopolistic brain washing religions is not very fond of the worship of other gods. But I do not see a reason, why for example an adherent of Talad would not direct any worship to Laanx from time to time — of course in a different way than organized Laanxists would do, rather worshipping Laanx like she was in her early days.
-
Wrzlprmft,
Wow... that's a lot of ground to cover but I'll do my best.
Deities are a concrete fact in Yliakum, since they appear directly in front of the citizens from time to time and use their powers (GM events), so you could say that religion is present and pervasive from the moment you enter the world. HOWEVER, just because they exist and have clearly demonstrated powers of godhood does not mean that everyone must pick a side & pitch in to help that side as if they were lining up to play dodgeball in school. (Small attempt at humor there.)
Magic is most definitely of divine origin. Talad created all the Glyphs that exist in Yliakum, and they are the only current source of magic for the denizens of this realm. Thus the glyphs are what limit the citizens' magical abilities. There is no known spell that can be used to force another to follow a particular god.
The gods are interested in being worshipped, as evidenced by either their specific requests to have temples built in their honor, the fact that they don't blast to smithereens temples they didn't request, or their occasional appearances where they directly ask for fealty.
Worship can bring with it items, knowledge, training, and other goodies, either through quests or GM events. However, godhood does not equate to absence of spite, jealousy, anger, etc., so some gods would not be pleased to find a citizen hedging their bets with another god. Also, you will find that some gods are polar opposites regarding goals, desires, and worldviews, so it might be hard for a person to follow two at once with complete honesty. Regarding the issue of serving a god dishonestly... it could get messy but it's your choice!
I hope I've helped answer some of your questions.
-
I hope I've helped answer some of your questions.
Thanks, you definitely have, however I would like to dig deeper on some aspects:
There is no known spell that can be used to force another to follow a particular god.
Just to avoid misunderstanding: I was not thinking of that extreme spells, but more of illusions and dream manipulation. If for example a sceptical character sees Laanx wandering around doing things, that are impossible to do with glyphs, he still needs to consider to be the victim of a clever illusion created by a bunch of Laanx priests — if that powerfull illusion spells are thinkable to be done with glyphs.

Also, you will find that some gods are polar opposites regarding goals, desires, and worldviews, so it might be hard for a person to follow two at once with complete honesty.
But what about those multiple worships without contradiction? Just to go back to my example of a Talad adherent, who worships Laanx a little bit too: As far as I understood it, Talad is quite sympathetic to Laanx and therefore he should not object to it, as long as the worship to him is not reduced. Laanx in turn may hate Talad and his worshippers, but my example should at worst be as bad in Laanx's eyes as the pure Talad worshipper and therefore not experience any disadvantages — assuming of course, that the gods behave logiccally to a certain amount and have no other reason, to object to multiple worship as such.
-

I don't claim to speak for the rest of the team here, but any glyph-created illusion spell with that sort of power could be a dangerous thing. It could make it possible for a player to use game mechanics to force another into an act that they did not necessarily agree to. As it stands right now, a player has the power to walk away from a fight or RP that he/she does not wish to be a part of. Mind control spells could allow one player to 'remotely control' another player and take away the power of choice. It is my opinion that any glyph illusion spells should involve simple things like smokescreens, hide in shadows, et cetera. I think the sort of things you are speaking of should remain firmly in the realm of RP, and only done with the solid agreement of all parties. Keep in mind that this is my personal opinion.
But what about those multiple worships without contradiction? Just to go back to my example of a Talad adherent, who worships Laanx a little bit too: As far as I understood it, Talad is quite sympathetic to Laanx and therefore he should not object to it, as long as the worship to him is not reduced. The solution here is full implementation of factions. We can set it up so that those with a certain level of Talad faction cannot do higher level Laanx religion quests (intolerance on Laanx's part), and also ensure that Laanx faction has little to no effect upon Talad religion quests (tolerance on Talad's part). We are already in progress on this and it will come to pass, it is just not complete as of yet.
-
Speaking of mind control effects there is one quest that deals with this alchemically as opposed to spell-wise. I believe it is claimed to be a true-death crime although the npc villain involved never seems to be punished for it. Certainly that is due to limitations of the game system. It has been a while since I did that quest so my information might be out of date.
-
Prolix,
Hopefully that quest has already been adjusted so that the evidence is lost, compromised or deemed not enough. We do try to make sure there are no quests that would result in the final removal of an NPC from the world, such as by true death or long-term incarceration. That would indeed break the realism a bit (Hi NPC X, didn't I just send you to jail yesterday?) , so if you can think of the name, tell me and I'll check it out.
-
nairoht knorg, is the name
it is correct he is being investigated and there is some concrete evidence.
I am not certain they say something like "he will go to jail tomorrow",
but even if they don't, as far as I remember the evidence is pretty convincing.
-

Hmm, I am rather interested in the in game reasons against it, than its implementation as rules. However in the spirit of this thread I do not expect an instant answer. Also I could do quite fine with answers like
“Those who worshipped multiple gods have been let down by all of them inexplicably.” (What would religion be without some ineffability?)
or
“When asked about multi-worship, a historian would usually say ‘Have you heard of the plague, fire and earth quake of 593? If you do not want something like this to happen again, do not even think about it!’.”
That it is an unsatisfyingly unexplained issue does not mean, that the answer cannot be short, simple or deus ex machina.
-
Well, the IG reasons to avoid (OR embrace) multi-worship will vary based on the relationships of the gods being worshipped. Take the examples of the Greek gods Zeus & Hera vs Apollo & Artemis. Zeus & Hera had a "stressful" marriage, and they would show their displeasure with one another by causing problems for the worshippers of the other party. On the opposite end, Apollo & Artemis were twins who cared much for one another and frequently supported each other and their followers. Also, don't rule out the possibility of falsely serving one god in order to take information back to another (risky business)!
In short, multi-worship should be possible (up to a point at least), but know your gods and your reasons for serving them.

You can believe in all the gods all you like, but they are jealous and you can only WORSHIP one.
Pay lip service to all of them if you wish. Make offerings all you like.
The intended implementation is toward difference and individuation among and between the faiths, not toward people holding hands with Talad on one side and Laanx on the other while you go skipping through the death realm to go have tea with Dakkru and the Blackflame.

This is just my assumption/impression, but it is hard to believe in and worship Talad without acknowledging the existence of Laanx. I don't think it behooves anyone to be disrespectful to any god. So I assume a small level of deference and respect is given to most of the gods, if not all, but like Xillix said, for the most part I think most people can only truly worship one. The tenets of the various gods will surely conflict at some point, and you have to make a stand where your loyalties lie primarily.

Do scars form/disappear when a wound is healed via magic or rest, or when one passes though DR ?
- Are scars permanent, or do they fade, and if so, how long does it typically take ?
Does/May one still feel pain from their fatal injury after they pass though DR ?
- would it be legit to complain about a soreness while in DR if you got there by diving into the waterfall from the eagle fort ?

How exactly do Nolthrir and Klyros speak when underwater? I've seen some player suggestions on the forum (that they have special membranes for making sound underwater, for example), but I'm wondering if there's an official Settings Team explanation.

Hmm. How does it promote diversity? In a way, it makes everyone the same... worship God A, B, or C to get benefit X, Y, or Z. Diversity would mean worshiping Gods through lifestyle choices and personal codes.
I thought the worship thing was to enforce the settings? I didn't know character development was a consideration.

About the last question: A religion is not really a hierarchy of its worshippers - they may well be represented via guilds, which will have their own structure.

How do priests of Laanx and Talad and the various public works (temples etc) fit into that? Is there a non-player guild responsible for the iron temple for instance?

Do Enkidukai and Kylros shed?
