Title: Pre-release of PlaneShift 0.5 and ChangeLog
Post by: Talad on November 23, 2009, 12:07:38 am
(http://www.thomhurks.com/planeshift/PSAAbanner.png)

After many sleepless nights and lot of hard work, we are ready for the open testing of release 0.5, codenamed "Arcane Chrysalis" !!! The testing will occur in our second server ezpc. This means you can still play your regular characters on the main laanx server! If you want to help us test the new release, please download the new installers from the links below. You will see in your connection strings this server: ezpc. If you are not interested in testing, just continue to play the stable release on laanx, no changes are needed to your client.

Important information:

    * This is a pre-release! If you are not interested in testing, just wait few weeks for the final 0.5 version
    * ALL ACCOUNTS present on main laanx server before 22-Nov-2009 have been migrated into ezpc for testing, so you do not have to re-create the account. Just use your current laanx login and password on ezpc. Here is a log of all changes present in this release.
    * All progress you may do on the ezpc server will NOT be maintained, so you can test freely any feature without the fear of ruining your char.
    * When this testing period is completed, we will upgrade the main laanx database to the new release.
    * All quests (except winch access) and all pets have been wiped. This will allow to better test the new quest system, and to clean up many incorrect/bugged pets.

Please read main site (http://www.planeshift.it) for links to torrent downloads.

If you find bugs or problems, please post them in our bug tracker (http://bugs.hydlaa.com)

- Thanks to Mr_Dave for continued work on minigames.
- Many thanks to Ravna for much needed work on the new webconsole.

New Features:
- Completely changed the way the Quest system works. A window now pops up when talking to NPCs instead, which allows you to choose
dialogue options. Typing is now only required for things like answering riddles. This new system can also automatically give the NPCs
the items and money they request.
- Speaking NPCs. (At least, the NPCs for which recordings have been done will speak)

- Support for bracers, belts and cloaks.
- Minigames are now possible with more than 2 players.

- NPCs will now turn to face you when you're talking to them.
- Support for building traps with the "/construct" command.

- Players can now create their own chat channels with an IRC-like system.
- Alliance chat.
- Added support for per-character permissions in guilds.
- Added a guild permission for guild banking.
- The client now sends the GPU name, GPU driver version and OS name to the server. This data will be used to optimize PlaneShift.
- You can now set your own colours for entity (items, playes, NPCs, ...) labels.
- Added support for "statue" characters.
- Added Italian, French, Spanish, Portugese, Catalan, Swedish, Russian, Romanian and 1337-speak translations.

- Thanks to Bovek, Stelanso and PhilT for massive fixes to crafting.
- Special thanks to Steuben for his continuing (though unfinished) work toward paths for npcs.
- Added significantly increased information to the life events in character creation to make them match in game locations more closely.
- NPC Guards now react to weapons in Hydlaa
- Various rules changes to aid balance made between engine, settings and crafting teams.
- Thanks to all the prospects for doing various legwork to make the above possible.
- All settings bugs are fixed (please find new ones!)
- Tutorial rewritten completely.
Changes That Have Been Made.
GMs & Devs:
GMs vs. Items:
- item characteristics as quality, unpickable, settingsitem and npcowned are now added to the /item GUI.
- When using /giveitem, the command output now lists the ammount given.
- /info now also lists position/angle/instance for action locations and items.
GMs vs. Players:
- GM4+ can now use "/assignfaction [target] [factionname] to assign a faction to someone.
- Instead of the chat message "New petition is waiting" GMs will get "New petition from [name]".
- GMs can now see all petitions, even the claimed ones. GM5+ can unclaim petitions.
- Frozen players can no longer start or accept trades.
- Frozen clients can't challenge anymore.
- /info now also includes the ban reason for a player
- Targetting support for /set
- GM2+ can now ban/unban for up to 2 days. For GM4+ it remains the same as before.
- The command /setskill with the argument -1 now returns the base skills value and the buffed skill value.
- Usability improvements to the /inspect command.
GMs vs. NPCs:
- GM2 also have access to /killnpc now.
GMs vs. Quests:
- When using the /quest command you can now give a quest name as argument to limit the results.
- The questtester mode will now override all quest prerequisites.
- Quests can now be assigned: "/quest [target] assign [questname]"
- GMs can now complete the master quest of an offline player.
GMs vs. Events:
- Added a new "Attackable" flag for GMs, making them attackable like NPCs are.
- GMs (GM3+) can now use "/set givekillexp" to give experience when they are killed. Use "/setkillexp" to set the ammount to be given.
- GMs can now specify the name of the "killer" when killing a player, so the message is "You have been struck by Laanx" instead of "You have been killed by a GM".
- Evaluation support for GM events.
- GMs can now award more than 65 of a "money item" at a time.
- The command "/event register range [range ammount]" now actually works to register all players within a radius to an event.
- When you morph, your description will not show your original race anymore.
Settings:
- Developers have a new webconsole application on their hands to manage the servers!
- Gender, Race, Advisor Points, Known Spells, Marriage, Item Possession, Traits, Item(s) (d)Equipped, being in a Guild (plus (in)visibility) and even Guild Name can now be quest prerequisites.
- Items can now have a "settings" flag, so the Settings Dept. doesn't lose its items ;)
- In NPC dialogue a $time variable can be used which will then change to morning/afternoon/ning etc in-game.
GMs vs. Various Stuff:
- On login GMs will get a message displaying the number of waiting petitions.
- GMs can now use /setskill on pets.
- GMs can now use /admin [nothing|GMlevel] to show either the commands they can access themselves or for a specific level
- GMs can now use ItemID's in admin commands: "/teleport itemid:407 here".
- Able to /slide across instances.
- A command like "/pos area:npcs:1000:rogue" will now actually list all rogues, instead of all entities starting with the letter "r".
- Fixed a bug where deleting a petition would confuse the entire petition window.
- /info now also displays the map name of the targeted entity
- /deputize is now GM2+.
- You can now deputize up to your own level.
- More possibilities for the /deputize command.

Engine:
- Update to the latest version of the Crystal Space 3D engine, resulting in the switch to a new Render Manager, much more widespread usage of shaders in PlaneShift and awesome lighting. (Great job Xordan!)
- Shaders can now be applied to equipment and characters.
- A complete rewrite of the magic and scripting system. (Great job Kayden!)
- Massive ammounts of work on a much more efficient loader and a background loader for items, maps and characters to speed the game up (Thanks again Xordan!)
- Items now use "pseudo-instancing" so 1000 apples on the Plaza won't cause as much lag anymore.
- Better speed hack detection with automated kick from server. (False positives possible, wide testing needed)
- GUI: Much more use of styles in the GUI XML files.
- It's now possible to pack GUI XML files with the GUI art itself, so you can distribute drop-in-place GUIs that don't conflict with other GUIs.
- For a GUI image you can now specify a part of the image (middle part for example) which should tile.
- Easier Translation: in psclient.cfg you can set the language to the one you want translated. Then create a directory with the same name in the /lang/ directory.
after starting and closing the client there will then be a stringtable.xml file in that directory which contains all strings to be translated.
after translation those strings will then be used in game. Distribute your translations please!
- A new network algorithm should reduce lag on connections with packet loss.
- Added initial support for "explorable" areas.
- Laid the basics for an "Eye Colour" character trait.
- Changes have been made to the collider system, so players are less likely to get stuck.

Commands:
- CTRL-ALT-click on the close box of a window will reload that window from the XML file. Handy for those GUI modders!
- Double-clicking on a non-merchant NPC will now start a dialog.
- You can now specify spell power in the /cast command: "/cast 45 Life Infusion".
- New command: /emote [emotename|list] (removed /listemotes)
- Commands for the new IRC-like chat system: /join /leave and /# (shortcut of chat channel)
  For example: /join ilikeplaneshift -> "ilikeplaneshift has been added with shortcut /3" -> /3 Hey folks! -> "[3: ilikeplaneshift] Talad: Hey Folks!" -> /leave 3 -> "left channel 3"
- You can now put /dequip righthand and /dequip lefthand in one shortcut, and both commands will be executed.
- New "/harvest" command.

NPCs:
- NPC chat: longer messages will no more take longer to show. Instead, it will take longer until the next received chat message.
- NPCs will now use "/say" for each line of chat, instead of /say'ing a whole story at once.
- The weapons of NPCs no longer degradate in quality. This would make them increasingly weaker over time.
- When fighting multiple enemies, killing one enemy will no longer make you drop out of combat.
- NPCs should be more responsive.
- NPCs now turn faster, for that extra deadliness.
- NPCs should chase more intelligently.
- NPC chat is no longer filtered since it's trustworthy anway and could lead to some strange dialogues.
- When an NPC requests 50 trias for example, any combination of coins that adds up to 50 trias will be accepted.

Pets:
- The Ring of Familiar now has to be equipped to be able to summon your familiar (pet).
- The familiar-summoning timeout is now lowered from 24 hours to 240 minutes.
- A challenge is now needed for pet vs. pet and pet vs. character attacks.

Other Quite Noteworthy Changes:
- The Tutorial is no longer instanced. All new players will share the same tutorial world.
- Redesigned the system of examining other players. It now takes more skills into consideration and has better opponent descriptions.
- Increased say range by 50%.
- In the description window there will no be an editable part of your description, and a fixed description with the info from character creation.
- /report changes: system, guild and group chat is now also logged. Emotes are logged. The reported player receives no warning. Now up to 15 minutes are logged.
- The last 10 chat messages before logging off will now be shown when logging in again.
- Now you'll only be notified of buddies logging in if they are fully done loading, so you're not /tell'ing them before they can receive messages.

Various:
- Mouse Move is no longer the default movement mode.
- /assist can now only be used on friendly players, so you can't use it to figure out your enemy's target.
- All active spells on a character are now cancelled on defeat and death.
- Support for dynamic slot ammount in containers. So a forge can have 40 slots and a sack 20 slots.
- Extended the say range within guildhouses.
- Guilds can now define the maximum ammount of guild points attributable.
- The tutorial tutor button will no longer appear on new characters when you've already completed the tutorial.
- Helms can how be held in the hands, when equipping they appear on your head by default of course.
- The character description window can now be resized for that easier editing when writing big stories.
- When dropping a non-usable item on your character in the inventory, it will now display a clear message it's unusable.
- You can no longer start a repair while being attacked.
- Buying/sellings items is now much more trustworthy under circumstances of heavy lag and lots of user actions.
- A player can now login even if they are already logged in. Existing connections will be overridden.
- Show the character name in the title bar of the PS window.
- Spells can now have images/icons in the spellbook.
- Weight, size and stack count are now more explicitly stated in item descriptions.
- When a player accepts your (auto)challenge, you will now see it in big letters on the screen.
- The /away message is now excluded from the auto-mute system, since those messages are always the same but aren't spam.
- Massive ammount of infrastructural changes, refactoring, redesigning, cleaning up and other stuff that's good for the future.

Bugs That Have Been Fixed:
- No more !leaf crashes.
- All portals working again.
- Fixed varous bugs where the client wouldn't display the correct ammount of money.
- Fixed a bug where clicking very fast on the buy training button would cause too much PP/Tria to be removed.
- When going through a map-loading portal you now always spawn on the ground. Before it was possible to jump through a portal repeatedly to "climb" the air.
- Fixed NPCs not fighting back or chasing.
- Fixed a long-standing bug that broke transparency for chatbubbles.
- Fixed a bug where certain items would become invisible to the client with some modded inventories.
- Fixed a bug where "Last Online" in the guildwindow wasn't correct.
- Using /screenshot no longer makes your character stop auto-running.
- Fixed a bug where players could still cast spells after their death.
- Fixed a bug where you would suddenly be unable to put glyphs in a research slot until after a relog.
- Fixed a bug where quest lockout didn't always work correctly, so you could do one-time-only quests multiple times.
- You will no longer get random messages saying things like "You probably should not leave 7 Roots of Jarana here" while mining.
- Taking money from the inventory and then putting it back again will no longer result in an error message.
- Fixed a case where you would start spinning after leaving the Death Realm.
- When you're sitting down and want to attack something, you'll now stand up instead of getting up on your feet instantaniously.
- Fixed a case where items of the same kind (apples for example) wouldn't stack together, taking up much space in the inventory.
- The client will now properly detect that the server is back up in the server-selection screen.
- Fixed a bug where bad words slipped through the filter in a special case.
- Fixed a bug where stamina wouldn't regenerate if a player was encumbered from carrying too much.
- Fixed a bug where labels were unreadable on low texture settings.
- Fixed a rare bug where (when logging in) other players would see the players' email address instead of his character name.
- Fixed a bug where choosing random parent names in character creation could end you up with parents of different last names.
- Fixed a bug where the client would continue to show messages that you received training when clicking on the buy training button, even though PP had already decreased to 0.
- Fixed a bug where an NPC name wasn't properly updated on the client-side after a rename.
- Fixed a confusion of the left-right finger slots in the inventory.
- Fixed a bug where a stopped repair would prevent the repairable item from moving back to the inventory.
- Fixed a bug where the chat window would sometimes scroll irratically.
- Fixed some cases where the camera would behave abnormally.
- Massive ammount of bugs fixed, besides the ones already mentioned.

oh good!  I can finally post this in the public section as well.  been hard holding in all this excitement!  yes, even the mod/gm teams like to have a little fun now and then.  :P

note, does contain a few curse words so don't watch if you have sensitive ears.  ;)

Since Tom put up the change log in the testing area as it's being revised before the public version is, well, made public:

New Features:
- Rideable mounts.

Congratulations dev team!  I think that's one of the oldest and most frequently asked for wish list items we've ever had.  Nice to get it finally checked off from the list.

Just before everyone gets too exited about nekos post: Some things are implemented but not available, and in general there are some things that do not work as they are supposed to:). Devs fixed some really bad bugs last weeks, but it seems the released clients have some that were gone before. If you find bugs, please check http://www.hydlaaplaza.com/flyspray/ to see if it was reported already. If not, make a new report.

Have fun!

That changelog reads pretty impressive, regarding public relations, rather well done!
As for its content - not minor impressive!

EDIT:
I might be too stupid, but the main site (http://www.planeshift.it/download.html) only offers me downloads for 0.4x =x

Use the links provided in the news article. The download site probably still points to the Laanx compatible install

2009.09.23 - thats the latest date I can see on the main site. Is there any news site other than http://www.planeshift.it/ ?

EDIT:
LOL - Ok sorry, I suppose you mean the News-button, er? ;)

On Vista64 right now, gosh I tried to log in like 20times, but in about 65% it crashes on my way in.

Annoying:
My screen is set to 1680x1050, and although I set my client to 1366x768 16x9 fullscreen, merely a frameless window pops up, instead of stretching it to fit the screen.

Maybe its my perception and excitement, but lighting looks way improved. Also the test-mounts at Harns are great. Okay, no animations for un-/mounting, but walking and running mounted is decent enough! Just make the location for being unmounted again shifted a little bit;)

On my box I had trouble with my mouse sensitivity. I set both X and Y to 100, still it was too slow (Intel i7; nvgtx295). But it was even worse inside Kadas - I had to cross half of my desk with my mouse to turn my char around 360°.

Apart from intermediate crashes without any reasons (no message on cmd that I started pslaunch.exe at, but I am not really that familiar with Vista64 anyway), my testing had its end when I had no chance trying to cross the wood section to the North of Hydlaa for like 10 times.

However, looks very promising!

Well... first hurdle... got downloaded/installed... but segfault trying to run either pslaunch or psclient...

- ldd of all binaries and libraries shows that all expected shared libraries are found.
- install did not list any errors and completed successfully.

64-bit linux installer on 64-bit Fedora 10 running KDE 4.3. Latest binary nVidia graphics drivers installed. System still loads the 0.4 client without any issues.

EDIT: Also cleaned out the default config folder in my home directory. I use the commandline directive to launch my 0.4 accounts in special folders, so the default is not shared between the 0.4 and 0.5 clients.

I got past the segmentation fault by moving my .PlaneShift directory and letting it create a new one from scratch.  FYI in case it helps.

Thanks. I did try that. It generated a new ~/.PlaneShift folder, but no dice.

I am looking at some other stuff, but I'm really not sure what to try next. If memory serves, i'm getting the same errors I did a couple months back when I tried to build the trunk client and server... but I didn't get it resolved back then either.

EDIT:

I'm one step closer... I did "./pslaunch --repair" and it downloaded a new copy. Now pslaunch loads and I can set a few options. When I go to launch the game... it still segfaults though. :( Here is the output from the console:

For a while it was crashing as soon as the client loaded, sometimes giving me an error. Eventually I found out it was because the 'skins' box was blank, as soon as I set it to 'elves' then it loaded fine

I did not yet try to install both versions on the same Windows user account ...

But I am a little concerned that the config files might cause issues, might not be compatible between both versions.

Just theoretically, I would recommend to play 0.4 with one user account, and 0.5 with another, if you want to play both alternating.

But if you tell me that you run both of them without issues, I will be convinced and relieved.

LigH you are indeed correct, there are a few issues. Such as the GUI incompatibility causing 0.4 GUI to disappear after attempting to use 0.5.

I can't use 0.5, I get Exception Access Violation errors... don't know what else I can do.

I downloaded and got to the login menu without problem.

I tried to login on my account. "you are running the wrong version of planeshift, please run the updater"
I ran the updater, no updates available.
I made a new account, "wrong password" even though it was the right password.

Suggestions?  8)

At the moment, PlaneShift 0.5 can not be used to play on Laanx! Only try to log in to EZPCUSA!

Hello

At least in 0403 is a configuration setting to use a different directory for the data that might conflict. I forgot the name of it, but you'll find in the psclient.cfg...
I'll try to change it for 0403 and then see once Im home (but on linux)

There is a known issue with the packaged libraries in the pre-release build for Intel OS X versions 10.4 and 10.5. 10.6 should run fine. A fix will be out soon.

Thanks Sulaika

This also seems to be a problem with the packaged libraries. It seems the libraries have issues on both PPC and Intel OS X 10.4 and 10.5. A fix will be out shortly.

linux amd64 initial installation would not run on my fresh opensuse 11.2. ran planeshift --repair from the command client and it replaced psclient.bin ( I think it was) from the mirror. I got into the game after that.

Initial impressions: loading times seem to be longer and cause movement problems, default gui positions are stacked and overly large, crashes at map boundaries. Everything looks quite nice. It would make more sense to use /dismount instead of /unmount, not too important.

Game loads and I can run around, I got into the tunnel to the arena and now it crashes every time I move. could be the map boundary effect or something.

Let me know if any of this is news and needs to be put in the bugtracker, I suspect it isn't.

can get ingame with psclient, but slow. Like has been said above... load times are longer and cause movement problems

PSLaunch is a brand new application and it's only been tested on a handful of Tester Team setups before, so I'm not surprised there are some issues with it, especially since we're releasing it for Windows, Mac, Linux and x86/x64 all at once. Hopefully the developers will solve the issues with it soon :) Alternatively, you an try the --console parameter so see if it doesn't crash when it doesn't load the GUI and goes straight to the updater part.

Things XilliX would like to see tested:

-check out the tutorial/levrus quests/and "Drinks in the Deep" to tell how tutorial and audio are working.
-check how dueling on mounts works out for you and report here
-check how torches are doing with lighting environment
-gms check the new gm goodies

NOTE: If you are on win32 uninstalling your previous version of planeshift and then reinstalling the new client may solve problems with black screen or exception access violation.  \\o//

I haven't managed to get in-game yet. I get past char-selection and then it's been loading for many minutes and the bar didn't even make it half through. At this speed it'd probably take close to an hour to get in game, it's loading that slowly (was trying a char at the arena). But before I reached the halfway-mark the server went down again.
I'll try with a char in a different zone when the server is back.
Running WinXP home.

In the launcher, under the graphics tab, try changing the 2 graphics settings to medium and low. This seems to speed the loading up for me hugely.

Are you sure you've copied the folder from the dmg into your Applications folder first? After you do that and you copy it may ask you for your password.

It is in applications. I says "contents" cannot be modified when I try to pull the files over into frameworks from the .zip file.  I am sure I am doing something wrong but I am not seeing it. :)

Initial impressions:

I'm not sure what pslaunch is supposed to do.  I haven't been able to run it with it crashing, and it's not clear why or if I should run it.

Psclient runs, but only if I delete my .PlaneShift directory and start from scratch.  I'll try and debug that.

Once I'm in, everything is black with occassional flashes when I suddenly see my surroundings, often in a strange colour.  I can see NPCs and players fine, and 2d icons in my inventory, but not the landscape and buildings.  There is a notable exception: I can see through portals until I enter them.  I've been using /pos and my memory to navigate, but obviously this is not practical!  If anyone has hints on how to approach debugging this on linux, please tell me.  Also, is this just me?

As this is a test client, are there any additional logging/debugging options we can use?  I've always thought it strange that here we are testing the client and yet it starts by telling us about how all the logging is turned off.

PS  Yay dev team!  This is very exciting.

I'm not sure what pslaunch is supposed to do.

pslaunch is supposed to be the new start application. It merges (and replaces) psupdater and pssetup and is also able to display PS related news.
Too bad it doesn't seem to work well in the rc2-package. I'm sure a fix/workaround is on the way :)

Hmm you need to somehow give it permission to change your PlaneShift dir in Applications. Usually OS X asks you this automatically. Are you running in a restricted account?

psclient.exe works fine, but pslauncher.exe goes out with a standard windows "this application has crashed and needs to be terminated" error.
I tried --console, but that only displayed the updater information (which had no errors).
So I ran it as pslaunch.exe > test.txt  and it filled test.txt with the following information:

Okay I launched the pslaunch. It says I need to update but I don't have permissions to do so. Please restart the program as an admin. What do I do here?

sounds easy enough. :) Although I am right clicking and nothing happens. Where do I right click? On the folder, when it is launched?

In the launcher, under the graphics tab, try changing the 2 graphics settings to medium and low. This seems to speed the loading up for me hugely.
I set both to low by now and in 5 minutes of staring at the "loading world" screen the blue progress bar has only just appeared. A tiny teeny bit. It doesn't seem like changing the graphics settings has made any difference.

Sorry, this client is unloadable on my machine it seems. :-/

If you are using a Mac you need to click on the PS folder and change the permissions to read and write and then click on the option to have the changes apple to the contents of the folder.

psclient.exe works fine, but pslauncher.exe goes out with a standard windows "this application has crashed and needs to be terminated" error.
I tried --console, but that only displayed the updater information (which had no errors).
So I ran it as pslaunch.exe > test.txt  and it filled test.txt with the following information:

The mounts being Ulbernauts is normal, they're just set up this way for now. It'll be properly done once the testing phase is over.

Handy feature that doesn't show in commercial games.  You guys are really thinking here, good job.

I got the same problem, XP Pro SP2. Loading arena. (Don't have other chars, so can't try other zones.) No real mem use, no real hdd use, full cpu usage, and 80~90% of that is "kernel time" which, as far as I know, is just calls made to the windows core libs/processes.
I've managed to reach inside the game once, it runs fine there. Additionally, I have all graphics set to "lowest".

specs: pentium M 1.5, 1.2GB ram, 64mb ate mobility 9700. Had no serious problems with Steel blue.

Are there any command line arguments or other options that we should know about for the client?

In particular, I'd like like to turn off shader support, since the client spends a lot of time spewing out message about that and my graphics card doesn't support it.  Also I'm having a major problem with lighting and perhaps it's related.  Can I turn off lighting entirely in some manner similar to the old fullbright option?

If there's anything else that might help us test and debug please post!

I've found I can sometimes see, at least in the plaza,  depending on where I am and what direction I face.  Still not normal lighting (everything is either super bright or pitch black) but any kind of vision is good.

I got to try riding a Rivnik-- this is great!  Nice work!

I found a workaround to the slow load for xp home. Minimize the game screen and flash it on and off from the taskbar. Each time it flashes it will load a bit. i got it to load in half a minute with that method by flashing it as fast as possible.

A few tips for Windows users:

Uninstall PlaneShift 0.4.03 first!

If you are using Crystal Space 1.4 or 1.9, turn off the CRYSTAL environment variable.

Doing these things got PSclient 0.5 from zero to hero for me. :)

Interesting, will try that later today. In the hope that I won't be greeted with an Access Violation like yesterday evening. That was no fun reward for 50 minutes of waiting for the world to load. :o

Edit: It DOES work, for whatever reason. Now I made it from a partly ever-shadowy arena (changing brightness didn't change anything in some corridors) to the plaza (which still took 5 minutes to load) and am frozen there. Need to try crossing it on a different computer later on, with this one, it doesn't seem possible. But at least I got in! Big improvement from yesterday!

Mellas managed to log on EPZ as well!  \\o//

I have to say, it looks really great! The mounts are really fun and work well, though I have to find my way around the lag.
The new chat channels are really handy, but I can't really see them flash as clearly as the original version. [The design of the current boxes seem more stable, but maybe it's just me having to get used to them.]
Loading time is not a problem.
Hairstyles for the dermorian males are a great add, looking forward to seeing them played IG.
Nolthrir hair color was expected, I got this effect by just turning off a shadow code for the hair file, but I think complete black looks better. Both colors however remain depressingly dark to my character. [ http://fenixxes.weebly.com/uploads/3/0/9/1/3091999/323812.jpg?606 ;D ] Can't complain though, the new color adds to the diversity.
For some odd reason I can't see nolthrir pants. O.o
The new spellbook with the new images is fantastic, very neat. But then again casting the spells looks terrible - entirely black. [not sure if this issue was known]
I'll let you know once I discover more, so far I'm really excited!

Side question...
Is it just me or is it impossible to play Laanx and EPZ at the same time? *wonders*

I think you can if you run both client versions. 0.4.3 for Laanx and 0.5 for EPZ. Just make sure you got different config folders for them.

We need OS details, and an error log if possible please, plus hardware details would be useful. Without those, it will be difficult to help you.

Well, still no information on debugging or other command line options :-(  I experimented a bit and tried various combinations of -verbose and -fullbright.  No luck on the graphics but it did cause lots of segmentation faults and an unbelievable number of error messages.  Seriously, if you want feedback and issue tracking, we could use a little more information.  Psclient doesn't seem to have a command line usage option, and pslaunch doesn't work for most of us.  Please let us know what the program's options are and what the logging and debugging possibilities are so that we can submit useful bug reports and narrow down the nature of the problems.

Great job Developers.   I was able to get into the game from my Mac after folowing the thread and applying the changes required.
The lag time is a problem, especially in the hydlaa area.
I love the rideable mounts  :) I did not crash going from Hydlaa to Ojaveda and back and then to the Bronze Doors. I found I had to cahnge to not run going through the transition areas though. I could not easily control the mount. Overall though a great job so far.  \\o//
The other issue I have is the Screen Resolution. I would like it to be 1680x1050. The 0.4.3 version had a selection of other to do that. That is missing from the pslaunch.app of 0.5.0 RC2. :(

Well, still no information on debugging or other command line options :-(

The options are most easily set in pslaunch; the next easiest way is to set them in ~/.PlaneShift/planeshift.cfg, you can also use the "-cfgset=<key=val>" command line option, for example "-cfgset=PlaneShift.Graphics.Shaders=Medium".

To find out what the options are if pslaunch is not starting, you could look through src/pslaunch/pawslauncherwindow.cpp; you probably wanted to know these:
Code: [Select]
Engine.RenderManager.Default = crystalspace.rendermanager.unshadowed | crystalspace.rendermanager.rlcompat | crystalspace.rendermanager.shadow_pssm
Video.OpenGL.MultiSamples = 0 | 2 | 4 | 8 | 16 (anti aliasing)
Video.OpenGL.MultisampleFavorQuality = true | false
Video.OpenGL.TextureFilterAnisotropy = 0 | 1 | 2 | 4 | 8 | 16 (anisotropic filtering)
Video.OpenGL.TextureDownsample = 0 | 1 | 2 | 4
Video.OpenGL.TextureLODBias = floating point number - presets seem to be -0.1 (best quality) or 0.0 (fastest)
Video.OpenGL.UseExtension.GL_ARB_vertex_buffer_object = true | false
PlaneShift.Graphics.Shaders = Highest | High | Medium | Low | Lowest
PlaneShift.Graphics.Shadows = true | false
PlaneShift.Graphics.EnableGrass = true | false
Planeshift.Loading.Cache = true | false
PlaneShift.Loading.BackgroundWorldLoading = true | false
ThreadManager.AlwaysRunNow = true | false

There are more, but that's probably all the relevant ones for now. Out of the rendermanagers, rlcompat is the basic compatibility version without a lot of the new features, it may give graphics artifacts but should generally be the fastest; unshadowed is the default,  should work well for most systems and supports probably all effects ps has; shadow_pssm is the slowest option with support for dynamic shadows.

Also, for those wanting to keep the old 0.4 settings separate, you could copy the ~/.PlaneShift directory to ~/.PlaneShift_test or something, then edit the "psclient" script in the 0.5 test directory with a text editor - change the
Code: [Select]
exec ./psclient.bin $@ line to
Code: [Select]
exec ./psclient.bin -cfgset=PlaneShift.UserConfigPath=/home/<your username>/.PlaneShift_test $@ replacing <your username> with the correct string. This will mean your screenshots, logs, setting changes, or whatever would be split between two directories so you might want to merge them later, or possibly just throw away the test stuff.

Well, damn. When this is truly released I'll boot it up, but from what I can see, the game play at least seems to be taking some steps in the right direction. The introduction of shaders will be more than welcome, and who can refuse an engine update?

I'm cautiously optimistic.

Thanks for this helpful information.

Is the rlcompat version of the rendermanager supported when running the precompiled client?
Code: [Select]
Engine.RenderManager.Default = crystalspace.rendermanager.rlcompatI get some access violation after the initial loading step before the login screen shows up. Just the same as when I enter some nonsense string at the same spot in the config file.
I do post this here rather than on IRC because I think the reply may be relevant for others, too. In case a custom build has to be made to support the shader, maybe someone will share the result.

Thanks again.

OK, I asked Xordan what the story with rlcompat was, he said it was intentionally not included as it wouldn't work correctly... sorry for the confusion.

However, those that compile from source are free to try it out, just don't report graphics glitches unless you are sure they are there with unshadowed ;)

i think the debuff curse should be disabled with people who go through the DR. we have to work our way out of the DR, why have a debuff when we already have to work our way out of the DR? I would understand the debuff for people who choose to respawn without going to the DR, but it doesnt make sense to put people into the DR then give them the curse after completing their way out of the DR.

I downloaded the new client and installed on my Windows XP Pro SP2 and... it did not launch.    'This application has failed to start because the application configuration is incorrect'. I fixed this by installing Microsoft Visual C++ 2008 Redistributable Package (x86).

It appears the C runtime DLLs packaged with the download do not work as expected. One forum I looked in suggested that from VC++ 2005 on these libraries checked whether they are actually loaded from a system directory, or not, so packing them with the application is no good. Don't know whether this is true or not.

In any case guys you obviously never really try to install this on a freshly installed system... you should really consider at least SOME compatiblity testing   I mean is it really such a big problem to install a fresh copy of Windows in a virtual machine and try to install the thing there?

Not to mention the webpage still states: Minimum Requirements: Windows (2000, XP or Vista) which is not very accurate, because the game just WON'T run on XP SP1 or lower.

Now launcher runs okay. The client crashed on first attempt. On successive attempts it crashed later and later and finally I got as far as logging in and seeing myself standing in Hydlaa.utton Then it crashes. You guys are the crash masters

Edit: Please do not double post use the modify button and you do realise 0.5 is a pre-pre release test version?

You obviously never really try to do compatibility testing for a cross platform game that is this cross platform, and under continuous development. We could try clean installs for all windows configurations we can think of. But that would mean not test other parts. Or skip macs for even longer. Or leave the big bugs we do know about so you would crash a minute later. Also, fixing such bugs would mean doing all compatibility testing all over again. And then we would still miss that one configuration where OS, service packs, hardware, driver versions and install directories are such that things go wrong. Instead, we do the best compatibility testing we can get: we pre-release in a way that everyone can safely try things, and report back problems they encounter so we can get them fixed. If you cannot find the few minutes to do so in a correct and friendly way, do not get upset because we spend our many minutes on other problems :)

I tried to install the new client on my laptop to test. Install went fine, update went fine, but getting into the game was a problem.
Most of the time I would click Play and it would just loop and take me back to the launcher again. If I got into the loadingscreen, right at the end it would crash out with Exception Access Violations of all kinds. The very few times I actually got into the game, opening a window or even turning around too quick resulted in the mighty Blue Screen of Death every time. I had set all graphics to a minimum and tried to reinstall and repair, but nothing helped  :'(

Specs:
ASUS EeePC 1000HE
Intel Atom CPU N280 @ 1.66GHz with 667 MHz FSB

Had the same problem as you did, Koios and this is what worked for me.

Navigate to the PlaneShift folder. Click on settings. Click on pslaunch.exe.
Change graphic quality from custom to medium. Set screen resolution to 1024x768

Use elves for the Current Skin. Click on Graphics at the top of the page. In Texture Quality change from high to medium.

Click OK, then Quit. In the PS folder click on psclient.exe to start the game.

You can always bump up the graphics and textures later.

I had to have 800x600, small screen on these Eee so with 1024x768 the buttons on the PS Launcher was below the screen and wouldn't work. I had all graphics at the lowest possible and it still was horrible to play. As I said, turning around in the Plaza would result in Blue Screen.

- In the description window there will no be an editable part of your description, and a fixed description with the info from character creation.

Am I reading this correctly? We will be unable to write a personal description of what other characters see when looking at us and will be unable to erase things that would otherwise be unknown to characters unless it was discussed in RP.
it's a separate tab which has your char life events according to faction and selection of the char creation and those two parts can't be edited plus you can add things among these two. it's visible only to gm/dev or who uses nature intuition

It's hard to find any. Yliakum has an aura that keeps making me comeback every Christmas. I've played other games, they are nice, but each to it's own. PS is unique.
Hydlaa, with it's background music, and the dark lighting...
Not sure why, but 0.5 looks much better than SB.

The very few times I actually got into the game, opening a window or even turning around too quick resulted in the mighty Blue Screen of Death every time.

Specs:
Intel 945 Express Chipset GPU

Same problem here, Koios. Upgrading to the latest drivers available for this chipset won't help, I guess you already tried that. My only hope to get the prerelease to run with this graphics card is to try a client with the rlcompat shadow manager. I have never tried to compile a client and still hope for someone else to experiment with this.

blue screen means your video card drivers are broken. try upgrading them. plus xp is an old operating system.

usually i get back, I get even more disappointed with the lack of progress the game has made the last year and thus leave again out of boredom.
Not good. Seems this new version with exiting new features managed to exclude me from playing it alltogether. Too bad, cause the game has potential.

Wake me up when there's a version i can actually play. No biggie though, i bet noone will ever use windows 7 as operating platform .... oh wait, they do :)

PlaneShift 0.5 RC2 runs fine on Windows 7 as long as you run pslaunch.exe as administrator.

isn't that kind of pointless if most players never use the cc life events in their character's history? the life events are way too specific, so no one uses them in rp. at least i don't. makes for a very non-unique character.

With all too many chars created with the help of those "cheat sheets" I would suppose this section of the char's description will not have any impact on any decisions before the next wipe anyway, right? If so, that section's content doesnt matter right now at all - except perhaps as a proof of concept and as a preparation for a future release.

I've been testing resolution settings.
Would it be possible that the game changes screen resolution by Itself? My screen is set at 1024x768, If I switch PS res to 2048x1536, PS simply shows a 1024x768 center part of the whole 2048x1536 (a crop of the screen).
Just a way that when playing, screen is at 2048x1536, but when the game is closed, screen goes to 1024x768 again. How easily could it be implemented? IIRC, most games do this.

Post by: neko kyouran on November 29, 2009, 11:12:23 pm
Not necessarily true.  It depends if you are playing those games in windowed or full screen mode.  If you play them in windowed mode, then they will stay at whatever screen resolution you initially tell it to be at, regardless of what ever you change the OS resolution screen settings to.  If you tell them to start in full screen mode, and then change screen resolution, most will auto change, while many others will just change the resolution back to what ever it was at before you changed once you tab back to the application and it takes over full use of the screen again.

Sarras, the CC's leave lots of room to add detail and keep your character unique.  For instance, an isolated house [CC] is very vague.  I interpreted as a ranch with lots of land around it, in fact my character's father needed the isolation in order to keep the animals calm because he was an animal trainer [CC]. Maybe the isolated house was abandon and your character's family are nomads so they took up residence in it.  Yep plenty of room for individualizing your character even with choosing CC options. I'll keep the response short, but that was just a quick example of how you need to let your mind wander to find out just how big the box can be when using CC options.  CC options are very useful to the rest of us who use imagination and game settings to create fun interesting characters.

umm i use imagination and game settings, too.

but i don't want a char that's done half the things you've done. and what if my char has done completely different things that aren't on there? the life events are too specific, they all have very specific descriptions that could be interpreted as very out-of-character for my character, and there aren't enough of them.

why does point distribution and char history have to be connected? can't we do both separately and just figure out how to base point distribution on unique events? it's pointless to do them together. i'd like to have my own history, tyvm, not one planned for me by the game.

But I thought the RC was statically linked to CS, no? The executables are so big. Or is it debug info?

remove it then it's conflicting. cs is never entirely statically linked it has a plugin interface so only one lib can be statically linked the main one the rest is in plugins and it's in the sub folders of the client CRYSTAL variables set around and/or floating plugins, which you probably have, give serious issues. no idea why it's big but you have to consider ps+cs base code base is quite big so it's not surprising a big executable (commercial games get around 50 80 mb like nothing for the main exe only)

From what I saw on Windows it looks awesome, the new interface is neat.

The fix of OS X players is earlier in the thread: http://www.hydlaaplaza.com/smf/index.php?topic=36288.msg413368#msg413368

Make sure you change the dir to read/write first, it might have been installed read-only.

Any potential fixes for the fedora10/11 x86_64 crystal space seg fault? Discovered the other night that walktest seg faults also, so it isn't likely the PS code causing the problem... but any suggestions on fixes are appreciated. I've logged ticket 727 on the cs trac site.

as for archlinux check with ldd if all the links of the plugin work correctly and check that variables are set correctly by the prerun script.
as for fedora your best bet is asking in cs channel on freenode

Got the client up and running with no problems in Mac OS 10.5.8 after following the directions in the thread.  Ran through the tutorial with no problems, except that the furnace is invisible.  Also, I was told to find Xordan, who apparently isn't in the tutorial anymore.  Abelia couldn't understand me when I told her I'd completed the tutorial, but did understand when I said I just wanted to leave.  That might have been my mistake somewhere along the line.

Otherwise what I've seen so far is absolutely beautiful and the voice acting made me smile real big.  Thank you so much for all of your effort on this game.  The changes that have happened since '04 are incredible :)  I'll keep looking.

There is a bug that results in not always all characters and items to be visible. In tutorial this can mean npcs such as Xargon or the furnace.

By "in your setup" you mean "on my system"? If that is the case, yes, they are there, which can be seen clearly from the output I have pasted. If there is a file after the '=>' arrow, it means that the library dependency was resolved to that physical file. You can even see that the LD_LIBRARY_PATH override is in effect, e.g.:

Code: [Select]
libCgGL.so => /home/rulatir/gry/PlaneShift/PlaneShift/libs/libCgGL.so (0xb76fa000)

you didn't check the plugins :)

Spare the smugleys please. Two questions you could well have anticipated:

1. How do names like "some.fancy.plugin" found in the output map to files that I can run ldd on?
2. Where do I look for these files?

I wondered those two things as well... can you please tell me how to find these both in the pre-release and in a local trunk build. I would greatly appreciate it.

Followed the instructions in the thread, and set everything up, but it still is crashing as soon as i launch it (Mac). The errors keeps saying "image not found". the icons arent like the ones on windows for PSLaunch and PSClient so maybe i have messed it up somehow. Any help is appreciated.

The "first raw test" video linked at "Official Planeshift Trailer - Pre-production Phase (http://www.hydlaaplaza.com/smf/index.php?topic=36343.msg414060#msg414060)" contains something pretty much looking like a bow.
Are ranged weapons now technically implemented as well, or is that model merely another one and only included as art yet?

There are no animations for players to use bows at this time.

my 0.5 client just did  mini update an now it loads quickly on my laptop but the graphics screw up quickly, ie when I run it leaves several still images one over the top of the other and they don't go away. one step ata time though glad to see client on my laptop loading fine, I tried to login earlier and after selecting my character and waiting over an hour it was less than 10% loaded, now it is within a minute

As it was some time ago with 0.4.02, the current RC distribution for win32 appears to be broken. One shall run pslaunch.exe with "--repair" in order to get art/materials.zip Just to try to get it. 150 mb and download such big file always fails :(

Could you guys repack the distribution with normal files?

And while you're at it, could you bring the tracker back online? I can't test the prerelease without downloading the client.

Call it with "psclient -cfgset=PlaneShift.UserConfigPath=$HOME/.Planeshift-0.5" (Or a path appropriate for your operation system). You can also change the PlaneShift.UserConfigPath variable in the psclient.cfg file of one installation.

Edit: removed one "your"

psclient -cfgset=PlaneShift.UserConfigPath=$HOME/.Planeshift-0.5
this means open a terminal window and type that string into it and press enter. in windows you would type cmd in the "run program" dialog box  to get the terminal. You may need to specify the complete path to psclient or change directory to whichever folder it is in. If you use linux you can replace the $HOME with a tilde ~/.Planeshift-0.5 The location of psclient varies by operating system mine is installed in /opt/Planeshift on linux.

PlaneShift.UserConfigPath variable in the psclient.cfg: this is a file that should be in the same directory as psclient and effects a more permanent change than typing the above.

Learning about your operating system will help you in the long run as there will not always be someone around to hold your hand when things go wrong. There will always be information on the net but if your problem is that you cannot connect to the internet you will be SOL.

Hello.  Can you tell me step by step how to solve the pslaunch .exe .  I can't find it anywhere.  Also when i click on inventory i get runtime error program J: psclient.exe   Thank you.  Ahmora
e

psclient.exe works fine, but pslauncher.exe goes out with a standard windows "this application has crashed and needs to be terminated" error.
I tried --console, but that only displayed the updater information (which had no errors).
So I ran it as pslaunch.exe > test.txt  and it filled test.txt with the following information:

System is windows XP Pro SP2 with 1.2 GB ram, and a 64 mb vid card (details in error report). If anyone knows what causes this, or needs more info to investigate this, just tell me. (here or on IRC)
