Yes, tell him! If I had a Euro for every time I argued with him about that...
What CoB, In Flames, Kalmah etc play is commonly described as Melodic Death Metal (\"Melodeath\"), which is like 50% Death, 20% Thrash, 20% Power, 10% $metalstyle...
Anyway, it\'s hard to put bands or an entire album of a band into just one category. New genres pop out of nowhere every other day, some with ridiculously individual (read: embarassing) names like \"puritanical funeral metal\" (I mean, come one? I hope the band who called their music that was kidding

)
Other rather well-known bands that I think haven\'t been mentioned before, but are worth mentioning:
- Clawfinger (Hardcore)
- Eternity X (Progressive/Melodic Metal)
- Graveworm (Melodic Black/Death)
- Nevermore (Thrash)
Not so well-known (some never got known, some aren\'t well know yet, some are from a generation before us

) in my opinion, but worth checking out:
- Agalloch (Doom + Death = Dark Metal)
- Amaran (Gothic, good if you like Nightwish but not Tarja\'s voice

)
- Arsis (Technical Death - if you like double bass XD)
- Avec Tristesse (No Category - they have them all)
- Barcode (Hardcore/Metalcore with an ounce of Punk)
- Empty Tremor (Progressive Metal)
- Fear My Thoughts (Hardcore, possibly NuMetal)
- Immortal Souls (MeloDeath, go for that if you like Kalmah or CoB)
- Imperanon (see Immortal Souls)
- Into Eternity (Progressive Metal with NuMetal and deathy grunt vocals (yes, that\'s possible))
- Magellan (Progressive Rock
- Porcupine Tree (Progressive Rock (Third Wave))
- Prophanity (Death/Black)
- Setherial (Black)
- Shade Empire (MeloDeath)
- Slumber (Doom/Gothic)
- The Mars Volta (Progressive Rock)
- The Black Dahlia Murder (MeloDeath/Technical Death)
- Total Devastation (Technical Death Metal)
- Wizard (Cheeeeese Metal, I mean .. er.. really really true Power Metal)
- Zonata (Power Metal, a little Progressive as well)
So what\'s all this \"Progressive\" stuff? Basically, instruments played in a very virtuousic fashion. It took me about 11 years in all styles of metal to finally get a connection to that one. If you\'re a fan of guitars and all the sounds they can make (literally

), try Porcupine Tree or Magellan, perhaps even \"The Mars Volta\" (the latter one is tough if you usually need smashing guitars to enjoy music

). If you need a bit more guitar smashing, and still want to try it out \"Liquid Tension Experiment\" (no vocals!), \"Symphony X\", \"Dream Theater\".
I could add about 200 bands more, but this should suffice for now.
