Yeah Norther has a number of great songs like Unleash Hell, Midnight Walker, Death Unlimited. And I love their Offspring cover Smash :)

Here\'s some scandinavian bands you might want to check out if you haven\'t before:
Finland: Stam1na, Thy Serpent, Viikate, Warmen
Sweden: In Flames, Therion
Norway: Sirenia

Warmen is the soloband of COB keyboardist Janne Warman, so most people here might be interested in that. Many excellent bands have been mentioned here... And that Kalmah rocks! \\w/

And yeah, Norther has some good stuff.

Clayzekiel, somehow I doubt that from those bands Viikate would make an impact on a foreigner. C\'moon, one just has to know the words ^^

About the swedish: I wouldn\'t say here\'s any specific region where the swedish people live on happily ever after  :)) . 5%:ish of the population are native swedish speakers and they\'re a bit scattered around, mostly on the western part of Finland (near Sweden of course  :) )

That\'s just what Jone Nikula said on this Finnish Idols Crap ;)
In translation for non-finnish people: Blood! Steel! Horses! :D

I\'ve noticed that finnish language in songs is not a problem for most foreigners. Viikate relies on lyrics quite much so you\'re right on that it\'s good to know what they\'re singing. Viikate ain\'t so much on the Heavy side, but at least reminds me of CMX, so this might be for you, Karyuu ;)

Stam1na is an unbelieveably remarkable newcomer who also sings in finnish. Their lyrics are just ingenious and the playing fits on them like a fist in the face. Kadonneet Kolme Sanaa is just the greatest song there is, at the moment.

Oh and swedish people are widely hated in Finland :)

I think that maybe the two most promising upcoming bands from Finland haven\'t been mentioned yet here:

Pain Confessor
and
Diablo

Hmm..what can I say? Go and check \'em out  ;)

I\'ll have to check it I guess. Although the name isn\'t encouraging. If the band was called \"Loki\" or something, I\'d check it at once xD

Hey, that\'s my favourite song of theirs too. Probably because it\'s simply the best (of Stam1na songs IMO) :)
But I prefer for example, Diablo\'s Shape Shifters over that. They have some really good sh*t  8)

Ah man, I just received an e-mail from Audioscrobbler about some new features or stuffs and it was the coolest auto-generated e-mail, ever... They miss me ^^

Anyway, now that I look at it, apparently most of the stuff I listened to was scandinavian metal and folk, mostly Finnish :P
Maybe I\'ll get back to using it too =P

Edit: Hmm... Checking through playlists of people appointed as my music neighbours I came upon a band from Norway called Windir. So apparently it\'s a black/viking metal with really good reviews. Does anyone have any opinion about that band?

Hahah! I used to... Absolutely adored a video of \'em singing into a ... pen, was it? Can\'t remember what song that was. Good stuff anyway, I shall have to revisit. Thanks for the reminder :>

Smith: No, My Lord. I am attempting to conceal it.

New Millenium Cyanide Christ.  I love that song.  Future Breed Machine and Straws Pulled at Random are my other two favourites in terms of their fast/catchy stuff.

The song starts off in 23/16 time over 4/4 drums (Except for the double bass which is matching the guitars in 23/16 time).  It\'s a monster!  I have a drummer who I jam with who is really into them and slayer and tool and can play stuff like the 46 and 2 solo perfectly, but he can\'t touch Meshuggah\'s footwork.  He just does a 4/4 pattern while I fake the intro.  After that it goes into 4/4 though and I can do it for real from there but man.... it\'s just a fun song.  Good pick. :-D

I looked them up a few months ago and all I\'m going to say is: *yawn*  :)
Just didn\'t hear anything in their songs that would be really special, kinda monotonous. But that\'s just me, check them out for yourself  ;)

Well I\'m off to a place with no internet, happy (and heavy) holidays to all  :))

Yes, tell him! If I had a Euro for every time I argued with him about that...
What CoB, In Flames, Kalmah etc play is commonly described as Melodic Death Metal (\"Melodeath\"), which is like 50% Death, 20% Thrash, 20% Power, 10% $metalstyle...
Anyway, it\'s hard to put bands or an entire album of a band into just one category. New genres pop out of nowhere every other day, some with ridiculously individual (read: embarassing) names like \"puritanical funeral metal\" (I mean, come one? I hope the band who called their music that was kidding :D)

Other rather well-known bands that I think haven\'t been mentioned before, but are worth mentioning:

- Clawfinger (Hardcore)
- Eternity X (Progressive/Melodic Metal)
- Graveworm (Melodic Black/Death)
- Nevermore (Thrash)

Not so well-known (some never got known, some aren\'t well know yet, some are from a generation before us ;) ) in my opinion, but worth checking out:

- Agalloch (Doom + Death = Dark Metal)
- Amaran (Gothic, good if you like Nightwish but not Tarja\'s voice ;))
- Arsis (Technical Death - if you like double bass XD)
- Avec Tristesse (No Category - they have them all)
- Barcode (Hardcore/Metalcore with an ounce of Punk)
- Empty Tremor (Progressive Metal)
- Fear My Thoughts (Hardcore, possibly NuMetal)
- Immortal Souls (MeloDeath, go for that if you like Kalmah or CoB)
- Imperanon (see Immortal Souls)
- Into Eternity (Progressive Metal with NuMetal and deathy grunt vocals (yes, that\'s possible))
- Magellan (Progressive Rock
- Porcupine Tree (Progressive Rock (Third Wave))
- Prophanity (Death/Black)
- Setherial (Black)
- Shade Empire (MeloDeath)
- Slumber (Doom/Gothic)
- The Mars Volta (Progressive Rock)
- The Black Dahlia Murder (MeloDeath/Technical Death)
- Total Devastation (Technical Death Metal)
- Wizard (Cheeeeese Metal, I mean .. er.. really really true Power Metal)
- Zonata (Power Metal, a little Progressive as well)

So what\'s all this \"Progressive\" stuff? Basically, instruments played in a very virtuousic fashion. It took me about 11 years in all styles of metal to finally get a connection to that one. If you\'re a fan of guitars and all the sounds they can make (literally ;)), try Porcupine Tree or Magellan, perhaps even \"The Mars Volta\" (the latter one is tough if you usually need smashing guitars to enjoy music ;) ). If you need a bit more guitar smashing, and still want to try it out \"Liquid Tension Experiment\" (no vocals!), \"Symphony X\", \"Dream Theater\".

I could add about 200 bands more, but this should suffice for now. :)
The internet is "the terrorists'" most important weapon, they say.
Wrong.
Fear is their most important weapon.
Ours is our freedom.

The Mars Volta are so over rated..... the guy has nothing to say so he writes meaninglesslyrics and hides behind how ambiguous they are.  The actual music is ok from time to time, except that it isn\'t that original - they\'re basically a cross between Santana and bands like For the Mathematics.  Those long instrumental breaks are incredibly self indulgent, but At The Drive In was incredibly self indulgent as well.  Plus they use and abuse way too much delay on the lead guitar and vocals.  They\'re better than what\'s on the radio, but...

Melodic death is just metal which is trying to be more melodic and radio-friendly.  IMO anyway.  It sounds closer to nu-metal than to death metal most of the time.
