hooded cape
« on: April 16, 2006, 01:01:14 pm »
ehm,, i thought about getting a black hooded cape,
because it would look more realistik if a thief or a evil person would have a hooded cape so you couldent see his head. or a hooded monk robe for an evil magican or archer..?
its not the end
its not even the beginning
but perhaps its the end of the beginning

An obvious suggestion :) All in good time.
Judge: Are you trying to show contempt for this court, Mr Smith?
Smith: No, My Lord. I am attempting to conceal it.

Considering that we\'re just beginning to explore mesh changes upon item equips, this may be some time away yet. But it\'ll come :)

And the cape could hide your character name (+ guild) from other players, until they were very close (much closer than the usual distance), but it would also count against you in combat or crafting, because you couldn\'t see very well.

Just a couple of ideas.

Oh oh, me like that...

But then there are so many threads about the whole hidden name thing.  People have mostly settled on RP recognition.

the name tag thingy is ooc the guildname is to... you could make some color or a symbol to show that it is an unknown person untill you can\'t see this symbol anymore...

Well, yes, I see your point about the name/guild being ooc, but I do think that sometimes it would be more fun if you _really_ didn\'t know who someone was, until you got close enough or until they spoke, rather than just pretending you don\'t know.

Okay, I suppose I could just turn the labels off completely, but then since everyone looks the same I wouldn\'t recognise people even if I knew them and they were clearly visible (no hoods or anything), again until they spoke, so that wouldn\'t be ideal either.

More to the point, if you want to be hidden IC you have to tell everybody that you are hidden before they recognize you.

... but now I think there might be a solution.  Give each character a serial number using letters and numbers.  With five symbols, that\'s enough for over 60 million unique combinations.

If someone is hooded, their \'number\' would be used in their profile (near the bottom), and in transparent system logs.  That way, you don\'t see a person\'s number floating above their head whenever they have their hood up, but you\'ll have a measure of their identity incase they try to grief you.

Uh huh....Or, if you have a the hood on and are hidden the game could just add (hidden) after your name...

Having a bunch of serial numbers in the chat menu would be annoying.

Eh, I\'m sure we can think of the perfect system soon (tm)  \\o/

The serial number wouldn\'t be in the chat menu.  It would be saved as a log somewhere in the planeshift directory, or something like that.

As far as just adding (hidden) after someone\'s name.... I don\'t like it.  It would be annoying, it would be hard to \'get into\' it.  And you just know that new players wouldn\'t abide by it.  Suspension of disbelief only goes so far.

But what if somebody whose name you don\'t recognize /says something?

Perhaps I am not understanding what you are saying at all?

All players already have unique IDs in the game - GMs use it sometimes for teleporting them or working with other commands if they cannot use the player\'s name directly. But I think the real issue of effectively hiding someone is, as Waylander pointed out, hiding them in the chat as well, without making them a drone like \"Entity says:\" or \"Cloaked figure says:\" or \"Individual says:\". Imagine having a bunch of these around and trying to figure out who said what.
