Linux Specific Issues / movement error on Oja Road and BD road
« on: December 15, 2008, 12:43:39 pm »
Are there any work around fixes for this bug? It's really annoying trying to move on the road where I continuously seems to "run on the spot" and have to change direction to get anywhere. I have the game running on MS windows as well and it does not to be a problem there. After a Linux system rebuild yesterday, I've just downloaded the game again and see this apparent bug is still active from months ago.

I mainly use Linux preferring to avoid MS windows unless absolutely neccessary.

Running Ubuntu Hardy.

Cheers

I've not played this game for a while, then a couple of weeks ago I got the updater error and could not log in. I've decided to uninstall the game and re-download it as per this guide. Doing this today I got the following error output: -

marty@marty-desktop:~$ wget -c http://download.xordan.com/PlaneShift-v0.4.00-x86.bin
--14:03:09--  http://download.xordan.com/PlaneShift-v0.4.00-x86.bin

Looks like there is a problem with the site for downloading at the moment. Can anyone confirm or is there something else up?

Linux Specific Issues / permanently logged in after crash
« on: June 30, 2008, 06:10:07 am »
Greetings.
First off, thank you folks for your tireless work on this project.
Since the 0.4.01 update that I picked up this morning, I managed to log in ok, but as soon as I opened the inventory, the client crashed. Since then, I'm getting a permanent message "log back in after 30 seconds".
Looking on other strings here, I've updated the XML file. I'm running a NV34 (GE Force FX 5200) graphics card. I'm hoping the XML file change will fix the inventory problem, but I can't check due to the "still logged in" bug.
Using Ubuntu Gutsy.
Please help.

Thanks.

General Discussion / Re: Roleplaying Focus
« on: June 10, 2008, 10:36:03 am »
potatoehead64,
perhaps you didnt fully understand it, or the guy who told you wasnt precise enough. Not using names of people in general of course is nonsense. But I presume it was meant that using names of people your char cannot know, since he never met them before or whatever, to adress one with is frowned upon.
Just imagine you walk around the street and you would know everyone's name, as if they had it floating above their head.

My suggestion here would be, if I'm not supposed to know somebody who has a name above their head, then why is it there? The fact is it IS there in much the same way as when you walk into a shop and somebody has their name badge on for the purposes of you being able to address them directly. Perhaps Devs could consider the ability for players to hide their name to other players... Maybe there could be a level where they are able to show it to friends only perhaps. That would also serve as a good way of stopping any sort of mobbing that goes on (bearing in mind that characters from the same race look very much the same).

As for emotes. The graphics cannot show that I approach the bar to buy a beer and drink it, so why not state it in an emote? After all, in a real world, that is what folk would see me do.

In any case, this is all tiny detail. As I said, if the way things are, are how Devs and the majority prefer it, then I respect it as so, but I'm less likely to engage in RP as it stands. The debate seems to be about whether people play the game for RP and the if's but's and maybe's as to why folk leave the game.

On the whole, I love this game and play it daily. 99% of it is how I like it. I've tried one or 2 others like Second Life and Regnum and they don't come close. Runescape has it's uses when PS has time out, but thats about it.

General Discussion / Re: Roleplaying Focus
« on: June 10, 2008, 06:05:52 am »
I have a small issue on teh RP side of things. I have to say that I don't RP that often, but recognize and respect the need for it as a clear goal within the game as set by the developers.

Yesterday, I was invited to the tavern for a little RP and decided to engage as a break from other game tasks. I was dismayed to be told in no uncertain terms OOC that addressing other characters by name.. i.e. using their name in the text is not acceptable RP protocol and also the use of custom emoting

i./e. /me glances round the tavern and consider purchasing an ale

is also frowned upon.
Whilst I accept this may be something somebody has decided, it just does not make sense. If custom emoting is not acceptable, then I don't know what RP really is. Also, by not addressing another character directly by name, there is no way of knowing who is speaking to who. This causes confusion.
I was told that to speak to someone directly, I must "face" them. This, I did and got told "What you looking at?!" I done RP in other games and used similar style and it has not been frowned upon. If these rules are how it is on PlaneShift, then that is fine, however, it may be a reason why many folk choose not to RP. I for one have been put off it.

BTW. I do use the /introduce system before addressing other characters and have introduced myself with my name (which does seem pointless when character descriptions are available for those who wish to look.)

Newbie Help (Start Here) / Re: orchabaly
« on: June 08, 2008, 01:49:04 am »
so, orchabaly needs some special jelly and said to me to get in the east part of hydlaa, i wrote all on the quest notes but when i tryed to read them there wasn't and i saved anyway i just need the name of the person who has thids special jelly if somebody know him or her (NPC i mean) could answer me?
i tryed to search on my logs. but all was very old like 2007 i don't know how to gfet it pleas help :-[

I've just done this quest. When you find the right person you should find it's pretty straight forward.
On the subject of quest notes, I've often found that mine disappear. It's quite frustrating and I'm resorting to faithful old quill and papris to make notes now (when I remember to that is)!  ;)
I discovered that if I don't hit return to a new line in the quest notes field, the notes often fail to save. Just a little tip that may help for the future.

The Hydlaa Plaza / Re: Where in Europe?

Germany ahead of UK, but then if it comes down to penalties, I guess we will lose. LOL

I'm visiting Germany for a few days tomorrow. Will be in the Koblenz area playing with a band.

This could be true, please everyone do not rush to "test" this fact.  We have people looking into it as time allows and they are active. More information will be posted as we know.

Well, Just to let you know that its not a problem I have experienced. All works fine for me with regard to "familiar". (Just a bit of feedback for you)

Newbie Help (Start Here) / Re: Hornquist is Missing
« on: May 07, 2008, 01:21:39 pm »
I remember when Harquist used to take off for days on a binger. People started making characters, there was one called Hornquist, and standing in for him. It was quite funny OOC. Completely irrelevant to the topic, but the spelling reminded me of it.

Yeah, I've heard the Harnquist apparently has a drink problem too. Or maybe this is just gossip. Here's another theory. Perhaps he is having a secret love affair with Tryllyn!  :-X

Complaint Department / Re: Newcomer's first impressions

At times when the server is down and I get extreme withdrawal symptoms, I've taken a look at 1 or 2 other MMORPG's. Regnum looked something similar, but there was certainly no tutorial whatsoever. I found the same with one or 2 other games like this. I have to say that after the last 2 months I'm totally and irretrievably hooked on this game now. Yes, it was a little lonely at the start and a bit awkward, until I discovered a suitable camera view. Then I started to get to grips with it all. I found other citizens of Yliakum were pretty helpful too.  Things became far more interesting when I was invited to join a Guild.
Keep it going guys.
I love it.

Roleplaying (Communitive Storywriting) / Careful of the view!
« on: May 03, 2008, 07:12:04 am »
Yliakum has many secrets and puzzles. Talad’s enlightenment of this land is revealed as wisdom and faith is gained through time.
Marthron had gained skills in discovering raw materials and crafting for quite some time, but some resources has eluded him. With a determination worthy of his noble ancestry, he proceeded upon his own quest to seek both copper and tin. Rumours were abound that these two resources could be found on the long road to the Bronze Doors, but where? This was the task he set himself on the blustery day when the crystal shone brightly. Marthron took a break beside the large lake and built a fire to cook some clacker meat. The distant sound of roaring Ulbernauts distracted him for a few minutes. Oh to have the skills and strength to cull such creatures. Maybe one day in the future that will be possible, Talad willing.

After some well earned rest and relaxation, Marthron proceeded in his search. Finally, after a long period of time he found what he was looking for. At last, the secret location of copper is discovered. He started to mine with gusto and enthusiasm. Other resources are found and when he had enough to carry without being overloaded, he proceeded to the forge.

“Hmmmmm, Harnquist at Hydlaa is quite a distance and surely the crystal is waning. Aha, perhaps the forge at Gungrodid would be a more suitable and much nearer. Verily, I have much to learn in crafting these resources.”

Marthron traveled onward to the home of the Krans. Tiredness overcame him as he climbed the steep slope of the town. Now to work! He began working with earnest at the forge.

“Indeed, what a truly amazing view I observe from this platform”. In haste, he moved closer to the edge of the platform. Suddenly a gust of wind caught him and he lost balance. Tumbling over the edge, he plunged to his death. Twas a dark place, maybe a dream, when a strange consciousness returned to him.

Roleplaying (Communitive Storywriting) / Brief (and dubious) Encounter
« on: April 27, 2008, 03:09:51 pm »
Twas an Yliakum day of great toil for this study Ylian. A seasoned traveler and merchant  between Ojeveda and Hydlaa, Marthron arrived at the Kada El Tavern weary and worn from many an adventure and duel with creatures in abundance. Much wisdom had been gained from crafting weapons of some considerable value. Light from the crystal was now waning.... It was time for rest and relaxation... and perhaps and opportunity to imbibe some refreshment from this establishment of... well ... apparent good reputation.

Marthron purchased a flagon of ale and, seated in comfort at a table, reflected upon his exploits.
"Alas, tis with a weary heart I remember maidens of great beauty. My hearts desire is to sing another lament."

A female Diaboli of great beauty approaches and fixes Marthron with hypnotic stare, the curves of her lean a lythe body entrapping Marthron's thoughts.
"Greetings fair maiden. May I be of assistance?"
The Diaboli leans forward seductively and hold out her scarlet hand for Marthron to kiss.
"Verily, may I keep you company? I see you sit alone."
Marthron indicates for this maiden to sit at the table. They talk for some while. Marthron tells tales of his quests and adventures and the maiden listens intently, gazing into his eyes. After some while she clicks her fingers and a serving Ylian arrived with further refreshment. Ale is consumed throughout the evening.
"Shall we proceed downstairs and sit by the fire? Tis more cozy there." The Ylian follows down the stairs to the warmth, feeling more relaxed at the sound of the fire crackling in the hearth.
Marthron becomes mesmerized by gentle music. The Diaboli maiden tells of her talent for dance for which Marthron takes great interest. Suddenly, she takes his hand, stands and begins to dance seductively around him. Marthron is entranced by this display. She swirls around the room, then comes close and places a hand upon Marthron's cheek. They kiss and embrace.
"Perhaps you would like to move somewhere more comfortable." Marthron senses a sinister inflection in the Diaboli's voice. Nonetheless, he stands and folllows. Unsteady upon his feet, the room begins to spin and a feeling of nauseousness overcomes him. Faltering, he collapses upon the stairs and remains there unconscious for quite some time.
Eventually, coming round in dim light, he feels a chill. Limbs ache his head feels heavy. The tavern is empty, save for some distant sweeping upstairs. Marthron proceeds gingerly to the exit.
"That will be 4 circles sire." come words from the innkeeper.  Marthron reaches inside his pouch to discover that it is empty!
"I have been robbed!"
"So it seems sire, but you must pay or face the wrath of Hydlaa guards."
"Tis only one item I have of value. Please take this ancient diamond encrusted platinum sword. A weapon of dubious use in combat, but has much value for its rarity."
The innkeeper studies the sword and grins ironically. "Methinks this may cover your debt sire. Tis a lesson you have learned. You are welcome here again. Be sure to bring your items of value!"

Linux Specific Issues / Hardy Heron
« on: April 25, 2008, 12:48:09 pm »
I've just heard the the latest Ubuntu version (Hardy Heron..... [phew... managed to say that without spoonerising the words! :-[ ;D ] has been officially been released for general use and a friend has given me a copy on disk.
Now..... before I go intstall/upgrade from Gutsy Gibbon, are there any conflict issues with PlaneShift that anyone knows about? Has anyone or is anyone running PlaneShift under Hairy...... oops  ...... I mean Hardy Heron already without problems? The last think I want to do is install this and then find I can't play my very favourite game.

Would be interested any feedback.

I know of Runescape because my son was an avid player. I used to moan at him for being so addicted to it and now, ironically I'm addicted to PlaneShift so thats one in the eye for me. LOL

My experience has been pretty good and a new player here. I recently joined a guild and that has helped with the feeling of a closer group within the game. Maybe I'll come across you in game and perhaps help you with the bit's of knowledge I have.

Good luck. Hope you enjoy.

Linux Specific Issues / Re: Newbie guide to installation on Ubuntu.
« on: April 13, 2008, 09:40:29 am »
ok I've downloaded it twice now, through firefox and wget, went through everything and I'm still getting this same message. Does anyone know how to get past this?

huggy@huggy-desktop:~$ /opt/PlaneShift/psupdater
/opt/PlaneShift/psupdater: line 5: cd: /home/huggy//opt/PlaneShift: No such file or directory
chmod: cannot access `psupdater.bin': No such file or directory
/opt/PlaneShift/psupdater: line 8: /home/huggy/psupdater.bin: No such file or directory
/opt/PlaneShift/psupdater: line 8: exec: /home/huggy/psupdater.bin: cannot execute: No such file or directory

It's starting to drive me crazy! ...please help me :(

I don;t know of this will help, but instead of downloading to "opt" directory, I created separate folder for it and used the file browser to look at it. When you find it, you'll likely need to change the permissions in the "executable". In terminal, the files should show up as green.

Another way to get advice would be to check the Ubuntu forums. I found this helped for me.

Sorry I can't be more help. It's a while since I sorted mine and I can't remember what I did.
