In-Game Roleplay Events / Re: [OSP] Red Crystal Evening of Arts

As for why I did post the lines in red in other posts. You two are free to check the private forums for my (seven) posts that were deleted and the threads that were deleted as well. Hopefully they were only moved there.
Unfortunately, average users can't do that.

Ha! So you have an axe to grind, which may or may not be relevant to the event, and in doing so you leave yourself wide open to the sort of criticism that is obviously getting you hot under the collar and in responding to it you are just prolonging the agony.

As a player who has had nothing whatsoever to do with this event or anyone or any guild involved, I would like to propose a big THANK YOU to the GM and Dev teams who dedicate so much of their time and skills on a VOLUNTARY basis without reward or, apparently, appreciation to provide the rest of us with a platform to play out our fantasies and party with our friends completely FREE. This event being no exception.

I received a forwarded email from my brother appealing for everyone to spread the word about Madeleine McCann. I thought I would reach more people in Europe by posting here. Madeleine's uncle says:

"As you are aware my niece, Madeleine, is still missing and I am asking everyone I know to send this as a chain letter i.e. you send it to everyone you know and ask them to do the same, as the story is only being covered in Britain, Eire and Portugal. We don't believe that she is in Portugal anymore and need to get her picture and the story across Europe as quickly as possible. Suggestions are welcome." Phil McCann

The official website is here:  http://www.findmadeleine.com/

Please post on any other discussion forums that you use, especially if you live in Europe and in your own language. Thank you.

General Discussion / Re: I want your thoughts.

The people that identify her... would they RP/IC recognize her (very unlikely) or only OOC recognize her and still throw her name-tag around as if it was IC-evidence? (in which case she'd be facing unrealistic consequences because her identity would be known from OOC information, which is bad RP.)

Ultimately, if anyone is being sought... it's a helm-wearing fenki in Oja. (and there's quite a few people that would fit that description!!)

Are you saying that the witnesses could not identify and point out the accused to the authorities because all fenkis look the same??

I have a suggestion which would solve the problem in the short term (though it could become a big problem itself if too many events were occurring on a daily basis):

Use the petition system to ask for an announcement to be made giving date, time and place; the announcement can then be made on the appropriate day in the MOTD. That way everyone knows something is going to happen when they log in.

eg.

MOTD

Anonymous is holding a party today to celebrate his birthday.
Meet in Brado's Tavern, Ojaveda at 5.30pm gmt

Anyone wishing to take part in an event being run by Anonymous Guild
Should gather in the Plaza at 6.30pm gmt today

I would have thought that this is exactly how Message of the Day should be used instead of seeing the same thing for weeks on end, and by going through the petition system you avoid abuse.  :D

Although I don't entirely agree, I understand (after much argument) what Janner means:

In the settings of the game "pets" are magical creatures tied to and controlled by a magical ring. The owner/bearer of the ring can summon his/her "pet" which can sit in one place and look pretty and sooner or later disappears. So to make these creatures artificially run and jump around is out of character, it is not normal behaviour for "pets". We can roleplay and imagine our pets doing anything we like.

Similarly; Klyros cannot fly although we understand that in the future they might, so if a dev or gm were to make a klyros fly round the plaza it would be out of character even though it is probable that a creature with wings would realistically be able to fly.

Don't confuse OOC/IC within roleplay with Janner's meaning of something behaving as we expect (IC) or something acting abnormally (OOC)

I hope this clears up the misunderstanding.

General Discussion / Re: NPC using an expletive?
« on: December 01, 2006, 09:54:34 am »
I would have to disagree, im English and have never been offended by this word. I think the majority of english people would probably agree with me.

So if I say to you; it's buggers like you that let the side down; you will not think I am being rude or offensive?

A. Bugger is an entirely acceptable word to the vast majority of people.

As I understand it; to you Americans bugger means a pest. To us Britons there is no such use for the word and in the context used by the NPC seems extremely rude. Bugger can be used as an affectionate term among friends; "silly old bugger" "little bugger";  but otherwise is just vulgar slang. Actually according to the Urban Dictionary (http://www.urbandictionary.com/define.php?term=bugger) the word ought to be accompanied by "little" in order to be inoffensive even in American. I was not allowed to use my own name in PS (Pippa) because in Italian it is slang for a sexual act. That was done in consideration of a MINORITY. How come an NPC is allowed to address players using the same sort of slang. Are Britons not worthy of consideration?

To us the NPC might just as well have been saying ".... he's taking care of F***ers like you"; it would be no more rude.

Because I find the change to be unnecessary and silly :) Well, and for the sake of the discussion. I am curious as to how far you want to take this: do you want to see "bugger" removed from the game entirely, and have players receive warnings for using that word? Should it go onto the official censor list? Do you want it erradicated from PlaneShift forever?

Genuine questions.

I find the use of the word by an NPC unnecessary and silly and a poor example to young people. No one could be offended by a friend calling them "silly bugger" but if a stranger called me a bugger I would be highly offended. I certainly would complain if a shop assistant called me a bugger because I asked them a question. Wouldn't you?
